Least Deserving Head Coach in the Playoffs?

...also known as "I can't believe Eric Mangini gets fired while Brad Childress still has a job...."

Voted turner because the team only won 8 games in the abysmal AFC West

Actually, after looking at the final standings (to generate the list), I've gone with Turner, though I was tempted by Childress. I still think Childress is an idiot, but Minnesota did win 10 games, and some of those were against good teams.

Turner's taken a playoff team, with good talent, in a crap division, and backed into the playoffs. Sure, I'll look stupid if they win the Super Bowl (since, ostensibly, that's why he was brought in to replace Schottenheimer), but it sure doesn't seem like he's improved them a lot (if at all).

Also, Ken Whisenhunt appears to not have returned from Thanksgiving vacation.

Watching the last minutes of Minnesota's game yesterday confirmed to me that Childress is a moron.

As a Vikings fan, I hate Childress as much as anyone.
But he did win 7 of the last 9 to make the playoffs and I have give him credit for that.
(Of course, if he wouldn't have cost the team 3 wins earlier he wouldn't have had to.)

Brad Childress takes this one. One of the most talented defenses and offensive lines and the best running back in the NFL and every game seems to be a chore to win.

Bill Parcels or Bill Belichek would have this same team 14-2 or 13-3.

Not with Tavaris Jackson / Gus Ferotte!!

Parcells and Belichek may be good, but they aren't that good!

I'm amused that you included all options on here, just in case someone wanted to vote for Sparano, Harbaugh, or Mike Smith.

While Norv Turner is everyones bitch no matter where he goes or what he does, brad Childres is far less deserving of his playoff spot. Minnesota lacks one player of being the best team in the NFL and that player is a real QB.

I think everyone is ignoring the fact that the Chargers had to win their last 4 straight to even get to .500, its not their fault that the AFC west is the worst division in football and that Denver couldn't be coached, cajoled or paid to play at an NFL level in the second half of the season.

San Diego didn't back into the playoffs, they fought their way in and thats the kind of fire I think could carry them through the playoffs. its 0-0 now and frankly any team with LT in the backfield would scare me shitless.

Turner

But Childress is a dork. And he looks like anything but a football coach. Maybe a professional bowler?

Basically, I thought it would be amusing to see if we had any truly blinkered homers here.

He definitely looks less like a Brad than any other Brad in history.

If Parcells or Belichick were in charge they won't be dumb enough to think they'd be fine going into a season with Jackson and Frerrote.

That's one of the problems with Minnesota, there is no GM. When they Wilfs bought the team they decided that instead of a GM, there would be a collection of 3 people ("Triangle of Authority") in charge for roster decisions; the coach, player personnel director, and their cap guy Rob Brzezinski as vice president of operations. Childress was the guy who wanted Jackson, and when Childress was asked in the offseason if they should go after another QB to compete for the starting job, he told them no.

He may not be the GM, but he's still the one responsible for the QBs on the roster.

Brad Childress. They were real close to not making the playoffs. They by far have a lot more talent than anyone in that division and probably the conference. 10-6 in the NFC North is not impressive.

This should be the Norv Turner Memorial Trophy. The Chargers were at a minimum a 10-6 team that Norv made 8-8. But I'm not sure why Brad Childress has a job, other than he made the playoffs without a QB. But with the talent they have on defense, that team should be better than they are. I have yet see anything out of him that suggests he's anything other than a run-of-the-mill coach.

Wisenhunt gets honorable mention but somebody had to win the West and his team is exactly who we thought they were, to quote their former coach.

Turner is awful and no way a team with that much talent should be 8-8... but Childress is just terrible.

You could make an argument for Reid. The Eagles are talented enough to have finished 11-5 or 12-4 had the playcalling been more balanced throughout the whole season.

Yeah, I voted Wisenhunt before realizing San Diego won 8 games in the AFC West.

Reid does get an honorable mention as despite him being the best option for Philly in the foreseeable future, he really is a stubborn idiot sometimes. Philly should have won 11+ games this year with any semblance of a commitment to running.

Don't forget the Chargers got screwed out of a win early in the season in Denver.
