NCAA 09: Hail to the Victors!

I'm starting this dynasty in the off season after year one with Michigan, so we'll start with the kids leaving with the draft and proceed from there.

The 2008-09 Wolverines were a dramatic departue from the Wolverines of old, as gone was the I-Formation, and in was the Spread Offense, complete with odd formations and razzle dazzle.

Michigan expected to struggle, but the offense managed to eek out points when they needed them, and the defense played huge, leading UM to a 10-3 record and a victory in the Alamo Bowl. Sadly though, they took another loss vs Ohio State, as well as losses to Wisconsin and Purdue.

Off the field however, the new staff was able to sure up the talent pool by grabbing seven early season commitments, including 2 five stars and 5 four stars, giving this class the makings of one of Michigans best ever.

After the big win over Texas in the Alamo Bowl however, it was back to the drawing board in an effort to get ready for the 2009-10 season.

Players Leaving

Michigan was not hit too hard with players leaving early this season. RS SO DT Jason Kates decided he was going to chance it in the pros, which was a shock to the staff, but not a huge loss.

The bigger blow was stud JR WR Greg Matthews throwing his name in the ring for the Draft. He was a big body who had 11 TD's in his Junior year, and will be sorely missed.

The only other non graduation wass was LOLB Jonas Muton transfering to LSU, which was not too big of a loss with the derth of talent from the 2008 recruiting class at the position.

Recruiting

With recruiting all said and done, this is how Michigan fared:

QB Jamie Wiggins
****

RB Charles Miller
****

WR Thomas Singleton
*****
WR Damien Scales
****

DE Jeff Callahan
****

DE Cody Cunningham
****

DT Brandon Collins
*****

MLB Tra Cunningham
****

CB Cole White
****

CB Austin Booth
****

FS Dan McIntyre
*****

FS Wes Wheeler
****

SS Ben Hall
****

We had several other kids signed but we decided to cut them as they were at positions we didn't deem nessecary to keep as many guys.

The lack of OL commits was not a shock as the 08 class fielded a half dozen solid kids, but this year we plan to hit it hard.

Week 1 Recruiting

We open up recruiting just offering out schollies, but we hit pay dirt! 4 star OLB Roman Holden of Spokane, WA commits on the spot to give us our first commit of the year! This is big as we could use numbers at LB, and this kid looks like a player.

The commits aren't done either! 4 star C Paul Carter, the #2 C in the Nation, is the next to commit to us. We manage to squeeze him out of Buckeye territory, and not a moment too soon, as we're going to be thin along the OL after this season.

With our commits done for the week, we spend our remaining time offer schollies, and proceed to game action vs the EMU Eagles.

Week 1: Michigan 56 vs EMU 7

This game was never, ever in doubt, as RS SO QB Steve Threet found a new favorite target in true SO WR Darryl Stonum early, throwing two 38 yard TD passes in the first quarter, and as a result, the Wolverines never looked back en route to a thrashing of the Eagles.

QB Steven Threet was 12/21 for 229 yards and 4 TD
RB Carlos Brown had 14 carries for 114 yards and a TD
WR Darryl Stonum had 4 catches for 96 yards and 2 TD
WR Toney Clemons added 4 catches for 118 yards and 1 TD
DB Donovan Warren was sharp with 5 tackles and a sack
DB Boubacar Cissoko added the only INT of the game, taking it back 88 yards for a TD

Also of note was we left the field totally healthy as we go into a big out of conference battle with the Oregon Ducks.

Week 2 Recruiting

Nothing new here. We offer out schollies to the rest of our board, and then target some need areas, like QB and OL pretty heavy. A few visits are set, but nothing earth shattering.

Week 2: Michigan 35 vs Oregon 24

Wow, our D was so bad today yet won us the game. We showed no inability to stop Oregon, but Oregon killed themselved with four turnovers inside the 20. Two fumbles which were returned for TD's, and two INT's, both INT's inside the endzone.

Carlos Brown stole the show however with 120 yards on 8 carries, the bulk of which came on a 96 yard TD run in the third which put the game away, thankfully.

Game MVP was DB Boubacar Cissoko, who after a pick six last week, forced two fumbles this week, both of which were returned for TD's. Gotta' love the magical touch.

We rest up again as we go into a heated battle with Notre Dame next week.
