congratulations to lathum and molly murphy on their new digs

so my boy lathum is, as I post, on his way to his first home....he and the lovely mrs. are moving into their condo tonight/tomorrow, and if you take into account that he has lived in about 10 different places in the last 12 years, you'll realize what a huge deal this is for him

congratulations guys, i just wish it wasnt 3,000 miles away from my place.

Nice! Didn't know he was really moving that far away, but congratulations! Now you've forced FOFC to google Molly Murphy.

Welcome! Now maybe we can finally get that happy hour set up, especially since we're in our month of summer. BTW I was drinking in Ballard tonight.....saw Dale Chihuly at the restaurant.

We were at Volterra for Ms.Path's birthday. Dale Chihuly is that glass artist who has the eyepatch, he's got stuff all over the world and a museum in Tacoma.

A condo? I've never understood the appeal, but at least you aren't throwing your money away in an apartment. Congrats, y'all.

The quality you can get compared to a house at the same price. Yeah, you pay condo fees, but you also don't have to do gross cutting, snow removal, and worry much about external repairs. It's all managed for you.

edit: I mean to say that a house is a great option if it works for you, but if you can't afford a fairly new house and aren't good at or hate handyman work... then a condo isn't bad.

The only thing I've ever owned is a George Foreman grill, so bear with me if I sound stupid here. Growing up, I was always under the impression that a condo was something that cost a ton of money, like it was almost a luxury item. I thought a house was a "normal" cost, and a condo was a "huge" cost, I suppose. I guess when I got this idea, I was thinking of condos that rich people buy on beaches or at resort locations or something.

I had the same idea too Pumpy, but once I started looking at property, I realized that's not always the case. There are the condos you're thinking of, costing $1 Million plus in a nice building or whatever, but there are normal condos too. A condo is more like a type of ownership.

We just bought a condo because we wanted to stay in the city of Chicago and be in a fun neighborhood near the lake. If we wanted a house with those specifications I assume we'd have to pay a couple million dollars. And we don't have kids or a need for a huge amount of space, so it'd be kind of silly to pay that much for a house.

Although it is depressing that our 2 bedroom condo cost more than my friends' brand new McMansions out in the suburbs of Detroit...

Congratulations, Lathum!

I've always thought condo's can be a great buy, though what gets me is the condo association fees. I recently left the homebuyer's market (I settle on a townhouse on 9/9), and the biggest holdup for me with the various condos was that the condo fees were, on average, $250-$300/month, with very few benefits. I could see paying that much per month, I suppose, if it included internet, or cable, or heating and water, or something, but $250 for standard trash removal (via a dumpster) and snow removal? No thanks.

I guess it's really different when you live in much more urban areas. I've always lived in suburban areas, so the idea of buying a condo or townhome has never really appealed to me.

Seattle has a strange dynamic. If you want to live anywhere near the city you need to go townhome or condo, otherwise you would be to far out and with traffic being what it is we would never go to the city.We are young with no kids so we wanted to be in an area that has alot to do. It isn't at all an affordability issue, our condo cost 400K and it pains me to think about what kind of house I could get for that 20 miles from here.
