It's only been one day, but maybe Madden sales won't exhibit the same decline it has these past few years.

ERTS: Report Early Madden ‘09 Sales Top Expectations

Posted by Eric Savitz

Not sure how much you want to extrapolate here, but there are early signs of strong demand for Madden NFL ‘09, the latest version of the Electronic Arts (ERTS) football game, which launched on multiple game platforms last night.

Stene Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia writes that initial checks find sell through is up in the low single digits from last year’s edition. “If this trend holds in the near-to-medium term, we believe investors will view is as a positive,” he writes. Bhatia says that expectations for the game were tempered by pre-order activity for the game that was down year over year. Bhatia says he has been estimating Madden units would be down 10% for the March 2009 fiscal year, he says that he is “getting more comfortable that actual sell through units could be flattish year over year.”

Bhatia notes the game is getting better early reviews that the ‘08 and ‘07 versions. Review sites Gameratings.com and Metacritic.com show the early reviews are mostly positive.

ERTS today is up $1.07, or 2.3%, to $48.58.

We won't know much until the August thread though. July's numbers come out tomorrow so I'll post 08 and 09 comparisons for NCAA Football though...

edit: Forgot to post a link to the article. here

You won't be able to make a final assessment on NCAA or Madden until after the September numbers. Both games always receive a small second boost of sales in the week or two after the season begins, so the best assessment usually doesn't come until late September.

Interesting move by Sony. They're switching from their 'no mascot' policy. They will now use 'Sackboy' as the mascot for the console...............

Rock Band 2 bundle (X360) will now be moved back and be released the same time as the PS3/Wii versions. The stand-alone game will still be released a month early on the Xbox 360..............

Externally, there doesn't appear to be a lot of difference. Early guesses are that they included additional anti-piracy features along with cheaper parts to facilitate a larger profit and/or a price drop. Tretton also stated at E3 that they were looking to add internal memory to the PSP, so that may be a possibility.
