Lowlands and SCAD

I just spent a couple of weeks in Savannah and then Hilton Head. Both places are pretty good for some down time.

I sort of get the lowlands reference, but when I heard people talking about it in Hilton Head, it seemed it was some sort of cultural or economic reference. Any ideas what they might be?

Secondly, in Savannah, the SCAD students are everywhere, and seem to own the town. I never heard of this school before but apparently it is pretty prestigious. Anyone have any stories or knowledge of this institution?

The word is actually "Lowcountry", not lowlands, and it means pretty much what you'd expect: the region is closer to sea level than the Midlands or the Piedmont regions.

hits most of the highlights I think.

I'm vaguely familiar with SCAD I guess, and know they do some good work in architecture history & historic preservation but to be honest I really don't have any impression of it being particularly "prestigious". Has a reputation for being, well, "artsy" and in my mind at least might be as much accused of about as much pretension as prestige. Also occasionally gets mentioned in the context of being a bit of a minor mecca for students with alternative lifestyles.
