There is a scene where a crew member has to swim underwater inside the sub past a point where he can return in order to free up the torpedo for firing. He knows he's going to die yet does it when ordered to do so.

I wouldn't say that at all. Maybe you were being sarcastic, but if you weren't, it's always good to have visual reminders (even if it is just a movie) of the good in people and the willingness to put others first.
