I'm expecting $1800, which will go to a new swingset we just bought the kiddies. The rest to pay bills.

Just to get myself back on the subject. We haven't got our check yet, but we already spent it on new furniture. Although we already had that money, so I guess we are actually putting it in savings. We are buying a house eventually so we are saving up money for our fund.

Not yet, should be tomorrow. We'll be getting $1800, which most of it will go towards airline tickets for the trips this summer. My wife is going to Florida and I'm taking my son to SF again, plus a side trip to Portland, Oregon.

It's a rebate, so no it's not extra income, it's a return of taxes you already paid.

Unless of course you didn't pay $1200 in taxes, in which case it's just a way for the government to hand out more money to you in an election year...

Thanks. According to that, I should have gotten mine on April 28. though I read somewhere that a lot of them for the 00-20 group are going out tomorrow (may 2) I hope so, not that I need the money, just would like it. We are doing our part to help the economy by buying some patio furniture and a little playhouse for our daughter. Saving most of it though.

Okay, I didn't get mine today. I did my original taxes through Turbo Tax and did direct deposit through them so I figured it would do direct deposit on mine. The "where's my check" feature still doesn't work for me. Guessing that's a sign mine isn't ready. Not worried yet, but wondering.

Seems like some folks may not be getting their money direct deposited if they used Turbo Tax...

It is only if you payed your fees out of your refund check. I always do that, so I'm a-waiting the paper check. Of course, when I filed I knew nothing about a "tax rebate" coming. I've been using TT for years, because my job before required some complicated tax rules that TT covered well, and many other computer products did not. I could have done this years taxes through a cheaper route, but it was just easier to use the same product and let it transfer all the info over. Oh, well!

Here's what I was referring to earlier in the thread. Quoted from an article

"To act as an advance payment, the initial rebate checks will be based off the taxpayer’s 2007 return. However, a true up calculation of the rebate will be necessary when the taxpayer files a 2008 return in 2009. By using a special worksheet, the taxpayer will reconcile the amount of the rebate they received in advance compared to the rebate they should have received based off the 2008 tax return information. For most taxpayers, the end result should be the same and no action is required. However, if the result is a positive number (underpaid rebate), the taxpayer will be able to claim the excess as a credit against 2008 tax liability. If the result is negative (overpaid rebate), the taxpayer will not be required to repay the balance to the Treasury.

An example of an underpaid rebate is as follows. A single taxpayer receives an advance $300 rebate check since he was considered a low-income taxpayer that had a federal tax liability of $150 on his 2007 return. However, upon filing a 2008 tax return, the taxpayer’s liability went up to $850, making him eligible for the maximum $600 rebate for a single individual. Therefore, the excess $300 rebate owed can be claimed as a credit against the $850 liability in 2008, leaving a net liability of $550."

And another from a different article.

"Second chance. After 2008, those who missed out on the rebate or received only a partial rebate get a second shot at qualifying with 2008 data when they fi le their 2008 return in 2009. This group includes those who did not receive a full $600/$1,200 check either because their 2007 income was either too low or too high, or they did not receive a full $300 child credit because their income was too high, as well as those who were not “eligible individuals” (or a child was born or adopted in 2008). They get another chance to claim the difference based on their 2008 tax return filed in 2009."

As I mentioned, my fiancee and I let our parents claim us as dependents which made us unable to receive the payment. However, my soon to be Wife and I on our 2008 return would be eligible for the stimulus payment. To me, this info posted above makes it sound like the $1200 will be taken out of our 2008 tax liability amount and should increase our refund in 2009.

Do others read this the same way?

I'll bet Craig's rebate that if he takes his wife & kids to a good local shelter they'll fall in love just as much with a recycled dog as they did with the Labradoodle.

Oh definitely. After Bear had been with us for a few years he developed a back problem that had us looking at surgery. Luckily, physical therapy has helped him out greatly, so he won't have to go that route.

However, my brother-in-law and his wife got a Corgi from a "reputable" breeder that has later turned out to have serious back problems. Serious back problems that the breeder knew existed in the bloodline. And this is from, by all accounts, a reputable breeder of Corgis. They've spent waaay more on their dog than we have on ours (even taking food into account - Bear's a big dog).

OK, I'll get off my soapbox now.

I agree with what everyone has said regarding the dog...of course, it's Craig's $ so he can spend it however he wants...but IMHO, the only reason to buy a breeder dog is is you are going to be showing the dog in competition (and possibly breeding down the line), or the dog has a specific purpose and breed is a factor...a friend of mine trains dogs for K9 squad so there are specific breeds he can work with.

Unless you fall into one of those 2 categories, I'd say start scouting your local Craig's List for shelter listings, and/or Petfinder.com and pounce on a dog when it becomes available.

The direct deposit hit the account last Friday, and the wife and I ordered our new recycled-content carpeting -- distributed, at least, by a US company -- for our basement. You have to love a country where you show your patriotism by government-subsidized consumption.

I didn't think it came in yesterday and I was kinda upset, but then I checked my old bank account and it was sitting in there. I could have sworn I had my tax return sent to my new account...

Ah well, the important thing is that I have it. Thank you, Govt!

WTF! I haven't got the 1800 we have coming and really could come in handy with a second car needed for work. I did my taxes through turbo tax in the beginning of February and got my tax refund in May. I am fully eligible not over the 150k for married. This should of came to my bank account months ago (my ss# ends with the 20-39 range). I tried the IRS website and it said when I entered my info that no info on my check was available. I called the number and like the same for the last two months and gave me the message due to unusual high call volumes they couldn't help me. Geez what a pain in the ass. Anyone have any idea?
