International Hockey Association (EHM2007)

New era in the IHA
May 19th 2006 – It has been a long and tough road, but hockey fans all around the world can now rejoice. After two years without any real hockey season, the IHA is going to be back for good.

What has now been named “The dark era of hockey” started way back in June 2004 when the International Hockey Association’s collective bargaining agreement came to an end. Attendance in the United States were dropping, player salaries were growing too much and the best talent in the league was now held by only a handful of teams; the New York Americans, Los Angeles Saints, Toronto Knights, Detroit Legions and Dallas Patriots spent an average of 65 millions on players every year while the league’s 25 other teams were only averaging 34 millions salaries.

After a summer without much negotiation and the postponement of the 2004 IHA Entry Draft, the inevitable happened and the owners decided to go in lockout. In January, the IHA commissioner Larry Hanshaw announced that the 2004-2005 season was cancelled, much to the despair of fans all over North America. Rumors then started to appear that there was a lot of discordance inside the International Professional Hockey Players Association led by businessman Gord Cowley. Some very influent players were starting to push towards beginning negotiations with the optic of a better league structure that would permit the IHA to survive, but in the mean time halting the growth of player salaries. In the front row of this movement were Detroit’s Tyler Banks, Toronto defenseman Timothy Dutton and New York’s Wayne Ludwig and Paul Bower.

In late March, after a few meetings, negotiations between the IHA and the IPHPA broke down. A week later, Gord Cowley was stepping down as the executive director of the IPHPA, with player agent Leo Gilbert stepping in for him. At 39 years old, three times Demers trophy winner as the league’s most outstanding defenseman Paul Bower announced his retirement because it was “time to fix this problems so the younger players and fans don’t lose any more hockey”, taking a high-placed role in the IPHPA as president.

It took nearly another year and multiple meetings before the league and the players’ association finally came down with an agreement that included, among other things, a salary cap and a complete overhaul of player contracts. It was too late for a season though. Meanwhile, multiple owners had sold their teams and a few cities weren’t going to be back in the league: Arizona was moving to Hamilton, Miami was moving to Quebec and Nashville was moving to San Jose.

Today, the league made a major announcement that should provide quite an interesting summer. On June 2nd in Toronto, there is going to be a league-wide lottery to determine the order of selection for an IHA League Draft. Therefore, every player’s right in the league will be up for grabs in a draft that will be held on June 10th. The 2006-2007 season will open a new era in the IHA and should prove to be very exciting.

Players outlook
#9 Tyler Banks – C – 5’11/178 – 37 years old – Formerly of the Detroit Legions
After nearly 1200 IHA games and more than 1300 points, all with the Detroit Legions for which he has been captain for the last 10 seasons, the seventh all-time IHA scorer is already claiming he wants to win a fourth Ice Cup before retiring. Gifted with a lethal wrist shot and a great understanding of the game, Banks hasn’t yet shown any sign of slowing down, and the team that drafts him hopes that the two years without any real season won’t have hurt him too much.
1198GP – 604G – 741A – 1345PTS – 3 Ice Cups

#22 Tomas Bezdek – C – 6’1/207 – 33 years old – Formerly of the Toronto Knights
Considered by many as one of the hardest working players in the league, Bezdek is a high energy player on both ends of the ice, but it’s his offensive abilities that make him such an amazing player. Bezdek is also one of the top playmakers in the game and a player that has shown the ability to step up his game at the most important times. He has somewhat slowed down in the few seasons preceding the lockout, but he is said to be in better shape than ever.
835GP – 267G – 645A – 912PTS – 2 Ice Cups

#10 Jason Bickhard – C – 6’4/224 – 27 years old – Formerly of the Portland Rebels
The second overall pick in 1997 has been criticized for never winning being able to carry the load when it counted, but as one of the best playmakers in the league and two time Reid Puck winner as the player with the most regular season assists, Ice Cups are only waiting to come. With two consecutive 100 points season before the lockout, Bickhard promises to be in the hunt for the Star trophy this year.
496GP – 167G – 325A – 492PTS

#1 Jean-François Brochu – G – 6’3/202 – 27 years old – Formerly of the Pittsburgh Miners
Drafted 1st overall in 1997 by the Pittsburgh Miners, one pick in front of superstar Jason Bickhard, the former Drummondville Faucons proved as soon as his first season in 1998-99, when he won the Joseph Trophy as rookie of the year, that he was going to be a great goaltender. One of the first of this new generation of big goaltenders, Brochu is a onetime Lalonde trophy winner as best goaltender.
363GP – 160W – 146L – 44T

#77 Timothy Dutton – D – 6’1/198 – 33 years old – Formerly of the Toronto Knights
A three time Demers trophy (best defenseman) winner, Dutton has been the backbone of a Toronto franchise that won the cup twice in the eight years preceding the lockout. A tremendous offensive defenseman who skates like the wind, Dutton is also an expert at shutting down the opposition.
912GP – 139G – 452A – 591PTS – 2 Ice Cups

#13 Daniel Ellet – C – 6’0/194 – 20 years old – Rookie
Daniel Ellet played the last three years with the Moncton Pioneers in the Eastern Canadian Junior Hockey League (ECJHL), and with Russian winger Alexei Kagakin, would have been one of the top two picks in the 2004 IHA Entry Draft had it been conducted. The Canadian centre is an amazing playmaker who should be the face of a franchise for years to come.

#32 Ville Huopio – G – 6’1/213 – 34 years old – Formerly of the Detroit Legions
Huopio came into the IHA at 21 years old and made an impact as soon as his first season, leading the Vancouver Dynamo to the conference finals with an amazing run as a rookie in the playoffs, losing in 7 to the Minnesota Polaris. One of the few goaltenders who consistently play around 70 games a season, Huopio impresses with his consistency and his ability to step up when it matters. His play hasn’t shown any sign of stagnating with age.
733GP – 416W – 216L – 81T – 3 Ice Cups

#3 Erick Justman – D – 6’6/218 – 31 years old – Formerly of the New York Americans
For the last 8 of his 11 seasons, the “Human Eraser” Erick Justman has played in the shadow of another great IHA defenseman, Paul Bower. Only now that Bower has retired are we starting to hear praise about this Canadian defenseman that could be one of the top blue-liners in the years to come.
864GP – 129G – 331A – 460PTS

#15 Alexei Kagakin – LW – 6’3/202 – 20 years old – Rookie
The big winger from Moscow is, at 20 years old, already considered to have what it takes to be one of the best players in the IHA. Without having even played a single IHA game, Kagakin is already talked about in the same vein as former Russian superstar and 5th all-time IHA goal scorer Anton Brezgunov. Kagakin is an explosive skater with a lethal wrist shot and impressive puckhandling abilities. Kagakin spent the last season with the Red Deer Battlers of the Western Canadian Junior Hockey League (WCJHL), with whom he won the Canadian Supreme Cup and was named ACJHL MVP.

#2 Sergei Lazarev – D – 6’2/189 – 36 years old – Formerly of the Detroit Legions
One of the greatest and, from all accounts, most under-appreciated players in the history of the IHA, Lazarev has been a steady, solid two-way defenseman for the last 14 seasons. With more than 1000 games behind his belt, three Dregger trophies as the defenseman with most regular season points and one Demers trophy as the league’s most outstanding defenseman, Lazarev will certainly become a key factor for the team that selects him
1044GP – 204G – 633A – 837PTS – 3 Ice Cups

#93 Wayne Ludwig – C – 6’6/235 – 35 years old – Formerly of the New York Americans
“Mr. America” Wayne Ludwig could have been up there with the Hall brothers and Frank Jenkins at the top of the IHA’s scoring history if it hadn’t been for an injury plugged career. In his 15 seasons, Ludwig has only managed to play a full schedule twice, but it is widely known that he has not been fully healthy from a nasty back for the last 5 seasons. It has been said that the two lockout years have been a blessing in disguise for Ludwig, who is said to be in amazing shape to come back and dominate in the IHA.
1064GP - 573G – 837A – 1410PTS – 2 Ice Cups

#10 William Peltier – LW – 6’2/218 – 23 years old – Formerly of the New York Americans
The son of former Chicago Wolves great Bob Peltier, William made an impression in his three first seasons in the IHA, scoring at least 30 goals in each of those three campaigns while winning the Joseph Rookie of the Year Trophy in his first year. Peltier is going to be one of the top goal scorers in the league for the years to come.
231GP – 103G – 94A – 197PTS

#15 Ladislav Pletka – RW – 6’3/229 – 34 years old - Formerly of the Los Angeles Saints
With 13 seasons of experience, 4 Star Trophies (League MVP) and 1 Ice Cup, Ladislav Pletka is one of the most successful players still in the league today. Although he is not getting any younger, the Czech star is still one of the best goal-scorers in the league with his lethal wrist shot and his amazing stick handling abilities.
1015GP – 550G – 685A – 1235PTS – 1 Ice Cup

#34 Joonas Sirkiä – G – 6’2/189 – 29 years old – Formerly of the Ottawa Capitals
Sirkiä spent a long time in Finland before finally coming over to play in the IHA, where he also spent two times as a backup before he finally made it as a starter. Since then, Sirkiä has shown that he can be a dominant goaltender and the backbone of a franchise, even bringing a mediocre Ottawa team to the post-season thrice.
257GP – 135W – 85L – 26T

Other notables:
#26 Ivan Cechmanek – LW – 6’1/194 – 26 years old – Formerly of the Edmonton Seahawks
#9 Philippe Gravel – C – 6’1/189 – 21 years old – Formerly of the Montreal Rouge
#41 Michael Herreman – C – 6’3/198 – 21 years old – Formerly of the Nashville Cowboys
#20 Ragnar Krook – RW – 5’11/198 – 33 years old – Formerly of the Buffalo Bisons
#13 Ralf Kümblin – LW – 6’4/213 – 22 years old – Formerly of the Houston Comets
#13 Daniel Ottl – RW – 6’1/205 – 29 years old – Formerly of the Atlanta Fire
#10 Elfot Petrick – RW – 6’1/196 – 24 years old – Formerly of the Milwaukee Crusaders
#14 Ken Soerenson – C – 6’2/205 – 23 years old – Formerly of the St. Louis Spirit
#71 Dmitri Tchesnov – D – 6’3/207 – 21 years old – Rookie - 1st overall pick by Manitoba in 2003

Hamilton goes back to its roots
The new Hamilton franchise is going old school. The owner of the franchise, billionaire John Bacon, has announced that the team was taking its name and colors from the Hamilton franchise that was part of the NIHL back in the 1930’s. The Hamilton Generals are going to wear their original black and gold uniforms, and be coached/managed by Mark Jenkins.

Hockey revival in Quebec
June 5th 2006 - After a 19 years absence following the precipitated departure of their franchise in a relocation to Dallas, Quebec City will be welcoming a new IHA team. With Dallas keeping the Patriots name, the new team has announced it will be named the Quebec Glaciers. The main colors will be light blue and red.

The team also announced that three times ECJHL winning Chicoutimi Fjord GM Nicolas Grondin was taking on this role with the Glaciers. At 39 years old, Grondin becomes the youngest general manager in the entire Internation Hockey Association.

"This will be an exciting challenge" said Grondin. "We hope to build a strong team, and we won't hesitate to look in our own backyard here in La Belle Province for players."

Former Quebec Patriots defenseman and Minnesota (NCAA) head coach Denis Joyal was named head coach. At 51 years old, Joyal spent five years as an IHA assistant coach before joining Minnesota to lead them to four national titles in six years.

Quebec holds the 20th pick in the first round of this week's IHA Draft.

Kagakin to San Jose, Ludwig falls
June 10th 2006 - With the first overall pick in the IHA League Draft, the San Jose Express selected young Russian winger Alexei Kagakin. The 20 years old from Moscow will already be placed in the spot light as the franchise player to attract fans in this new market.

Jason Bickhard to Portland, Ladislav Pletka to Calgary, William Peltier to Los Angeles, Michael Herreman to Washington, Daniel Ellet to Detroit, Jean-François Brochu to Montreal, Joonas Sirkiä to Denver, Tomas Bezdek to Atlanta and Sergei Lazarev to Philadelphia rounded the top 10. Among other interesting picks, Timothy Dutton fell to the Pittsburgh Miners at 11, Ville Huopio to the Houston Comets at 13, Erick Justman to the Ottawa Capitals at 22 and Tyler Banks to the St. Louis Spirit. Also worth noting that Los Angeles re-united the Ukrainian twins, Vadim and Lev Sivov, formerly of the Manitoba Thunder.

The biggest story though had to be the fall of “Mr. America” Wayne Ludwig. There was a lot of speculation on the huge 35 years old American centre and it looks like too many question marks to pass on more certain talent. Ludwig was finally picked 53rd overall by the Denver Mountaineers with whom he signed a one year contract reportedly worth more than 7M$.

A look at your Quebec Glaciers
June 13th 2006 - The 32 rounds of the IHA League Draft have been completed, and Quebec Glaciers' ownership and personal presented some of its new players today.

With the 20th overall pick, Quebec selected a highly heralded rookie who had been the first selection in the 2003 IHA Draft by the Manitoba Thunder but who never got the chance to play in the league because of the lockout. Dmitri Tchesnov, drafted out of Kamyshin, Russia, came over to play two seasons in the WCJHL with the Medicine Hat Mystics, where the defenseman impressed with his excellent two-way game and his bone crushing hits. He went back to Russia to play with Togliatti during the second year of lockout.

"I am happy to play in Canada. I will do good with Glaciers." were the few words the journalists were able to get from the very reserved russian defender.

The next two picks, 41st and 80th overall, were two hometown selections: 29-years-old goaltender Simon Rivard, who comes from Montreal but played his junior hockey with the Quebec Arsenal, and 26-years-old left winger Marc Leblanc from Ste-Justine.

"I am honoured to play for the new team here in Quebec. The team showed interest in local players, and it's a great exemple of giving the fans what they want. We should be a winning team very quickly." said Rivard.

One of the most popular picks came at 200th overall, when Quebec selected 37-years-old Peter Jovanovski. The big winger, who had played the last nine seasons with the Minnesota Polaris, is getting up there in age but should still be one of the premier power forwards in the league. The pick also shows Quebec's intention to be a winner as quickly as possible.

"I expected that kind of fall, I'm not a young player and most teams want to build assets." said Jovanovski about the long wait he had on draft day. "I'll try to be a leader on and off the ice."

Defensemen Daniel Sladek and Mattias Larsson and forwards Luc Roy, Drew Rivera, Svatopluk Matousek and Carl Tomlinson were not present at the press conference but should all be important players in Quebec this year.

Quebec to pick sixth in 2006 IHA Entry Draft

The league conducted a second lottery today to determine the drafting order for the 2006 IHA Entry Draft. The Montreal Rouge recieved the first overall selection while Quebec will pick 6th.

The draft class is particularly strong this year; because of the lockout, the league has decided to combine the 2005 and 2006 IHA Entry Drafts in one single 10 round event. There won't be any superstars drafted, but the five most heralded players should all have successful careers in the IHA:

International Hockey Scouting Agency (IHSA) Top 10:
1. D.H. Kang - RW - 6'1/222 - Owen Sound Aces (CCJHL)
2. Michael Chevaldae - C - 6'4/209 - Peterborough Barons (CCJHL)
3. Steve Klyakhandler - LW - 6'0/189 - Minnesota (NCAA)
4. Brandon Aydede - G - 6'2/180 - Tri-City Golden Shields (WCJHL)
5. Erik Sundqvist - C - 6'0/185 - Brynäs (SWE)
6. Cameron Hughes - C - 5'10/174 - Nanaimo Islanders (WCJHL)
7. Marc Peregrin - C - 6'0/184 - Drummondville Faucons (ECJHL)
8. Matt Hawley - D - 6'5/189 - Prince George Orioles (WCJHL)
9. Dana Phleger - D - 6'4/218 - Minnesota (NCAA)
10. John Baker - C - 6'2/202 - Everett Kodiaks (WCJHL)

2006 IHA Entry Draft conducted in New York City
June 24th 2006 -The 2006 IHA Draft, consisting of players from the 2005 and 2006 years of eligibility because of the cancellation of the 2005 draft, was conducted today at the Madison Square Garden in New York City. American winger D.H. Dang was the first overall pick by the Montreal Rouge.

With the sixth overall pick, the Quebec Glaciers picked goaltender Brayden Aydede. The big nineteen-years-old defenseman from the WCJHL adds depth in what general manager Nicolas Grondin had publicly called the "weakest position in the team's organisational depth". The Glaciers had no junior goaltending prospect.

In the second round, 36th overall, the Glaciers selected canadian defenseman Stephen Kistler from Bowling Green in the NCAA. Kistler will turn 20 years old before the start of the season and is expected to sign with Quebec in order to start the year with Trois-Rivières in the MDHL.

Quebec then traded their third and fifth round picks to Washington in order to move up into the end of the second round (55th overall) and select Daultan Puppa, a creative centre from the Cranbrook Cobras of the WCJHL.

The Glaciers also traded away their fourth and tenth round pick to Minnesota for a third round pick in 2007. In rounds six to nine, Quebec selected defenseman Josh Muldoon from Minnesota in the NCAA, centre Greg Boghossian from the Calgary Archers of the WCJHL, centre Louis-José Côté from the Chicoutimi Fjord of the ECJHL and russian defenseman Aleksei Aisenyev.

Training camp opens in Quebec City
September 12th 2006 - In their first training camp, the Quebec Glaciers have taken a somewhat surprising approach, opening training camp with only 31 players present; 30 under contract with 1 prospect invitee. It will be a tough camp though, as all of those players have a realistic chance at making the team, and none wants to be among the ones who will start the season with the Trois-Rivières Assault of the MDHL or the Utah Kings of the MDHL-2.

The training camp started today with meetings and fitness testing on all players. It was the first time that most of the future teammates met since the draft, and the atmosphere was very good from the beginning. Two players showed up particularly fit: Swedish stay-at-home defenseman Mattias Larson and 21 years-old local offensive defenseman Yanick Lalonde from Gatineau.

Players were also separated in four teams for a scrimmage that will happen tomorrow morning. Team Red, led by Luc Roy, Dmitri Tchesnov and goaltender Jouko Parviainen will face off against Team Blue whose lineup will include Peter Jovanovski, Svatopluk Matousek and goaltender Simon Rivard. In the other game, Team White, led by Marc Leblanc, Olivier Normand and goaltender Charles Dalgarno, will play against Team Green, led by Drew Rivera, Carl Tomlinson and goaltender Brandon Aydede.

Tomlinson, king of the scrimmage
September 13th 2006 - With 3 goals and 3 assists in Team Green’s 7-5 victory over Team White, Newfoundland’s own Carl Tomlinson was the star after the first skating day in the Glaciers’ training camp.

“This is the first day of the year, and for some of us it has been two years.” said a laid back Tomlinson after practice. “It was fun, but there’s nothing to it.”

At 26-years-old, the right winger from Stephenville will be starting his third season as a full time part of an IHA roster. Formerly of the Seattle Metropolitans, Tomlinson has scored 27 goals in both of his first seasons and is hoping to net 30 this year as one of the go-to guys in Quebec.

20-years-old winger Juha Heinämaa was the star in the other scrimmage that ended in a 4-4 tie. Heinämaa was a high profile prospect for the 2004 IHA Entry Draft and would have probably been a top 20 pick if it had been conducted. He spent the last two years playing with Espoo in the Finnish Hockey League.

The Glaciers will play their first out of six scheduled pre-season games tomorrow against the Dallas Patriots in Quebec City. Charles Dalgarno will be starting in net and the lineups will be mostly filled with younger guys.

Quebec barely beats the Patriots
September 14th 2006 - There was a lot of hatred directed towards the Dallas Patriots at the Colisée Red Bull in Quebec City. 19 years after the Quebec Patriotes moved to Dallas and became the Patriots, the team was back in town to face the new home team, the Quebec Glaciers. Sure, it was only an exhibition game, but the momentum carried onto the ice where both teams played a high-tempo physical game, in which veteran Luc Roy scored a goal, the game winner, and added an assist on his way to leading the Glaciers to a 5-4 win.

21-years-old Russian defenseman Dmitri Tchesnov was playing his first pre-season game in the IHA, and he really made an impression. The big hard-hitting defender played 29 minutes, had three hits, one shot blocked and two assists and was named the third star of the game.

Quebec powerplay too strong for the Rebels
September 16th 2006 - The Glaciers scored four powerplay goals in the third period to come back from a 4-3 deficit and beat the Portland Rebels 7-4. Luc Roy was once again the star of the game with a goal and two assists. Mark McKinnon finished the game with three assists.

The Glaciers should announce the first cuts before tommorow’s game against the Seattle Metropolitans.

Five players cut, three to go
September 17th 2006 - The Quebec Glaciers announced today that four players were sent down to the Trois-Rivières Assault. Yanick Lalonde, William Ellis, Stephen Kistler and Juha Heinämaa failed to secure a roster spot to start the year in the IHA and will therefore go down to play in the MDHL. Goaltender Braydon Aydede was also cut and will go back to his junior team, the WCJHL’s Tri-City Golden Shield.

There are 26 players left in camp with the Glaciers, who should announce three final cuts next week in order to bring down the roster to the limit of 23.

Quebec crushes Seattle
September 17th 2006 - Quebec won their third pre-season game today by destroying the Seattle Metropolitans 6-2, shooting 57 times at the Mets’ rookie goaltender Todd Tye. Only three expected regulars were not in the lineup for this game: star forward Marc Leblanc, goaltender Simon Rivard and veteran winger Luc Roy, who had already played in two pre-season games.

31-years-old playmaking centre Drew Rivera, who is by most account expected to be the team’s first line centre, was the first star of the game with a goal and four assists. Jouko Parviainen blocked 20 shots for the win.

The Glaciers have three pre-season games left against Hartford, Washington and Pittsburgh.

Fred Miller sprains UCL
September 18th 2006 - Canadian defenseman Fred Miller, of the Quebec Glaciers, suffered a sprained UCL in his game against the Seattle Metropolitans and will be out of action for four to six weeks. The versatile 31-years-old, who can also play left wing, was fighting for a spot on the roster as a bottom pairing defenseman but will now find himself on the injured reserve.

Quebec finishes pre-season undefeated
September 23rd 2006 - Pre-season records don’t mean much, but the Quebec Glaciers can start the season in full confidence after winning all six pre-season games. Quebec ended their pre-season schedule this week by defeating the Hartford Bears 6-2, the Washington Stars 7-2 and the Pittsburgh Miners 7-0. The scores were of course inflated by the high number of regular players used by Quebec in these last three games.

A few things were set in these final three pre-season games where we could see chemistry develop among some of the team’s lines. We can expect to see the same top two lines of Puchkov-Rivera-Jovanovski and Leblanc-Matousek-Normand.

Weckworth and Dalgarno sent down
September 24th 2006 - With Fred Miller’s name added to the injured reserve, only two players had to be cut in order to satisfy the 23-player roster limit. 26-years-old winger Ian Weckworth and 27-years-old goaltender Charles Dalgarno were the two victims as they were unable to secure a spot with the Quebec Glaciers and were therefore sent down the MDHL affiliate, the Trois-Rivières Assault.

Surprise in New York
September 25th 2006 - It wasn’t a surprise that Latvian goaltender Evgeny Bodnieks won the starting job of the New York Americans, but future hall-of-famer Mark Engman being beat by Lewis Dembski as backup and finally being placed on waivers was quite a shock for the hockey world. Dembski certainly is not a bad goaltender, as proven by his 400 career games, but nobody expected him to beat the 39 years-old two-times Lalonde trophy (Best Goaltender) winner Mark Engman, who’s 488 career wins place him fourth in history, five behind 40-years-old Vladislav Kysela who will be starting his 14th season with the Philadelphia Titans this year.

If Engman isn’t picked on waivers, which is to be expected, he will be sent down to the MDHL’s Indianapolis Raiders. It is still unknown if the Canadian goaltender, who has a one year contract for 2M$, would report to the Americans’ minor league team.

Jovanovski named captain
September 28th 2006 - Without much surprise, winger Peter Jovanovski was named the Quebec Glaciers’ captain today by head coach Denis Joyal. Jovanovksi served as captain of the Minnesota Polaris for the last five years of his career. Swedish defenseman Mattias Larsson and local winger Luc Roy will serve as assistants.

Meanwhile, after gathering no interest on waivers, New York goaltender Mark Engman has announced that he will indeed report to the Indianapolis Raiders of the MDHL and try to work his way back to the IHA. The goaltender, who has two Lalonde trophies (Best goaltender), two Ice Cups rings and one Ice Star trophy (Most Valuable Player in the Playoffs), added that he will thrive to bring leadership to the younger players in the Americans' organization.

The Quebec Glaciers: Part I
The regular season is going to start in two days with a home-and-away against the Ottawa Capitals, followed by the first Quebec-Montreal game in 19 years at the new Colisée Red Bull. Before starting the season, let’s have a look at the 2006-2007 Quebec Glaciers. For this first part, we talk about the goaltenders.

#35 Simon Rivard – 29 years old – 6’1/194 – Montreal, QC – Formerly of the Milwaukee Crusaders
The former Quebec Arsenal was a high first round pick in the 1995 IHA Draft by the Hartford Bears. It took him a few years to develop, and he was traded away by the Bears who had given up on him, before finally having his breakthrough season in 2000-01 with Milwaukee. An agile butterfly goaltender, he likes to challenge shooters. He has a great glove hand, works his angle with ease and has good rebound control. He is also a very athletic goaltender. One of his biggest weakness is his handling of the puck around the net. He is expected to be the starter in Quebec for the next few years, playing around 60 games a year.
266GP – 104W – 123L – 21T

#30 Jouko Parviainen – 31 years old – 6’0/180 – Lappeenranta, Finland – Formerly of the Ottawa Capitals
Parviainen was the backbone of his hometown franchise, Lappeeranta, pretty much single-handedly leading them from the second to the first division towards the end of the 90s. In 2002-2003, Parviainen was convinced by his friend and fellow goaltender Joonas Sirkiä to come over and play for the Ottawa Capitals, where Parviainen served as backup for two seasons before the lockout. Parviainen plays an hybrid style, a crossover between stand-up and butterfly. A very hard worker, he thrives to be the best but doesn’t complain when he has to take a backseat. He’s very agile and has quick reflexes. He will be the backup this season and should play around 25 games.
29GP – 12W – 12L – 3T

In the organization
Charles Dalgarno – 27 years old – 5’10/178 – Invermere, BC – Currently playing with the Trois-Rivières Assault (MDHL)
Brandon Aydede – 19 years old – 6’2/180 – Williams Lake, BC – Currently playing with the Tri-City Golden Shield (WCJHL)
Konstantin Oksuita – 29 years old – 6’0/176 – Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan – Currently playing with Ufa (RUS)
