And I've mentioned it on at least one occasion as a food my father-in-law loves, but my wife won't eat. (Mrs. SpeechCoach is Pinay).

Also, I've had lutefisk on a few occasions around Christmas, and it was actually pretty good. My ex-fiance was norwegian, and it was a tradition around the holidays. It doesn't really have a taste, so whatever flavors you put with it, are actually the only tastes you get. The only thing that's weird is the consistency, but it didn't bother me like it does others. It's funny that I like lutefisk, because I usually dislike fish.

I'd eat the sheep head as long as I didn't have to look at it, since I already eat cabeza burritos (made from cow cheeks) from this one lunch truck all the time. I can honestly say that they are the best tasting burritos I've ever had.

Having said all of that, I would not even go into the same room as a fucking balut egg. I'd rather eat roasted cow anus than that shit.

It's not as bad as most people would think.

It's essentially a hard boiled egg, only with a little boiled duck.

We usually eat it as it is on the first picture on the Wiki site. We crack the egg, put a little salt, and scarf down.

It tastes hella great with a little bit of salt. Seriously. Also, eating the chick is just like eating buffalo wings. Same texture, only with some hair.

The visual of eating balut may not be appealing, but it is definitely delicious.

I am not a big fan of my food having hair on it still.

There is one Filipino food that I can't eat. It's a fruit.

Durian.

Oh god. Even the name just makes me want to vomit.

I've tasted it before... it's really, really, really good.

But the smell.... the smell... oh god the smell of raw durian. *shiver*

Taken from the Wiki entry:

“ ... its odor is best described as pig-shit, turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw fruit is forbidden from some establishments such as hotels, subways and airports, including public transportation in Southeast Asia."

Oh yes, the durian. I saw that on TV as well. I can't remember the guy who goes all over and talks about food, not the gross food guy, though I think I saw balut on his show. Nevermind......

Anyways, the durian is best eaten alone is what I remember him saying.

i thought if there was feathers on it it was too developed. See, if there wasn't feathers on it and if I could look at it without eating...I don't think the TASTE would weird me out or anything. Like if you blindfolded me and peeled it for me and cut it up or whatever so I didn't know what it was, and there was no feathers, I would probably eat it. It's sitting there looking at the lil duck-fetus that would make do it for me.

Most cultures have some pretty grim cultural food tucked away somewhere ...

I personally love black pudding for instance - but the pigs blood puts a lot of people off ...

BLACK PUDDING
Ingredients:
1 quart pig's blood
1 quart milk
three quarters pound bread crumbs
1 cup cooked barley
a half pound suet
1 cup dry oatmeal
salt and pepper to taste
1 ounce powdered mint
Method:
Mix all ingredients together in a bowl, pour into a large pan and bring to the boil. Pour into a wide shallow bowl and season again if necessary. When cold it may be cut into slices and fried. This goes well with a traditional fry up.

Fry up. Fried Eggs Bacon Sausage Fried Bread Black Pudding. Beans or Tomatoes and sometimes chips (french fries) too

Pig's blood is delicious. We also have a Filipino dish similar to that. Pork blood stew or, as we call it, Dinuguan.

Dinuguan was my initiation into the family. My wife knew her lola would try to feed me some, and she told me exactly what it was. When I ate it with no complaints, she knew I would fit in.

We actually did that to my American uncle.

But for every dinuguan and balut, there's always pork/chicken Adobo, Lechon, and Kaldereta.

I'm sure you've tried the above AZ.

I could live on nothing but adobo and lechon. I'd weigh 500 pounds, but I'd be so happy! My colleagues appreciate the huge pot of pork adobo that Mrs. AZ makes for our out-of-school gatherings.
