What, no Grammys thread?

Once again, Kanye believes he is more important than the awards shows and asks twice for them to stop playing music while he's stopping, the second time it worked and they let him go on. It's great.

Yeah, man he comes across as such a dick..at least he appears to realize it but just doesn't care.

I really dug his performance though, that was pretty cool actually.

There should be more award shows. Probably one every day.

Entertainers don't get enough verbal masturbation from the media and each other.

I think it was canceled because of the writer's strike. I turned it on and saw The Time performing Jungle Love, so I figured they were replaying a broadcast from the 80's.

MY wife and I attempted to watch a little but between that hack Amy Winehouse winning awards and us realizing it was the hip hop awards ( nothing against hip hop) we couldn't stand it.

Othert then the foo fighters I don't think they had one other performer we like.

West has a good message but he isn't the best about delivering it when in front of an audience unfortunately, and he comes off as a dick just when he runs out of time because he isn't as eloquent as the others who get up there.

Foo just won Best Rock award, which is cool.

Can someone help me understand what time period you have to release a CD to get considered? For instance, this is the 2008 Grammys, but they mentioned Ludacris as last year's winner, then showed a graphic that said 2006 Best Rap Album. So is this the 2007 Grammys just presented in 2008? Also, Jay-Z's Kingdom Come, released in 2006 is up for an award, even though he released American Gangster in 2007. Kanye West's album Graduation was released about a month before American Gangster, but it was indeed nominated (and won).

It's confusing it seems.

Damn east coast bias. I was wondering what the hell you all were talking about at first, but then realized that they're playing ahead in eastern time, with it being 10pm and all there.

I'll stop reading until they're over. But as far as I can see, they're not very good so far. A mish-mash of people they're throwing together and it gets worse and worse each year. But hey, so long as the stars are happy, I guess.

haha Vince Gill just totally owned Kanye West.

And yeah, I'm not a R&B fan at all, but Alicia Keys is just stunningly talented IMO.

Just me, but I didn't see anything wrong with him saying cut the music.

Also, Beyonce shouldn't wear a dress that short with legs that fat.

Radii, I wouldn't call that owning him

RA- I am about the biggest KW fan you'll find, so I had nothing wrong with him saying that at all - especially because he was trying to get a sentimental message out, talking about his late mother. Gotta commend a guy that is the biggest hip-hop star on earth and comes to the Grammys and plays his little known song "Hey Mama" as a tribute, with MAMA inscribed in his haircut.

Beyonce in that second dress looked hot as balls. I'm thinking the first one was just an homage to old school style.

I'd actually never heard an Amy Winehouse song or had any idea what the hell kidna music she even made before tonight. The only thing I've heard about her is all the drug hoopla.

I fully expected to hate it, but after listening to a couple songs on youtube and the performance I was actually impressed. She does have a very good voice, and it was definitely not the music I expected by seeing her and hearing about her.

I can also say I prefer her singing to her talking after that acceptance.

You've obviously never listened to a Kanye West record, I would say he "sings' just about as often as he "raps", if you want to break it down like that.

From Wikipedia:

The show will honor musical achievement of the 2007 recording year in which recordings were released between October 1, 2006 through September 30, 2007.

But there are other loopholes. For example, even if a CD came out before October 1, 2006, if you released a single after that time, you could still be eligible for an award this year.

Flashback time. Just out of interest, the winners of the major awards in 1997:

Album of the Year: Celine Dion's 'Falling in to You'
Record of the Year: Eric Clapton's 'Change the World'
Song of the Year: Change the World
Best New Artist: LeAnn Rimes
Best Alternative Music Performance: Beck's 'Odelay'
Best Female Pop Vocal Performance: Toni Braxton 'Unbreak my Heart'
Best Male Pop Vocal Performance: Eric Clapton 'Change the World'
Best Pop Performance by Duo or Group: Beatles 'Free As a Bird'
Best Female Rock Vocal Performance: Sheryl Crow "If it makes you happy"
Best Male Rock Vocal Performance: Beck "Where it's at"
Best Spoken Word or Non-musical Album: Hillary Clinton (!!!!) 'It Takes a Village'

'Change the World', sure won a fair amount of awards for a song that I don't think I've ever heard (and judging by the title I don't think I really want to).

Beck was in fashion, a new Beatles track got it's inevitable awards, and Celine Dion somehow won the biggie.

No wonder 1997/98 was the time when I started branching away from pop music.

OK, I have heard this song actually. Cheesy, but no where near as cheesy as I expected.

I keep expecting it to turn in to Tears In Heaven though, especially near the beginning.

Yeah, Andrea Bocelli is very much blind, but also extremely talented. Great performance by him and Josh Groban. I missed an opportunity once to see The Three Tenors, something I regret missing, since I'll never have that chance again.

Pretty good show tonight. Shocked that Daughtry did not win, given this show's bias to American Idols the past two years. Was hoping Beyonce would win -- she is such a babe. Some good performances all around, though it's too bad Prince did not perform. It also would have been nice, given the 50th Anniversary, to see Michael Jackson.

Album of the year was a huge surprise. First jazz win since 1963 and only the second ever.

Oh, and Barack Obama won a Grammy. Cool!!!

How lucky was Carrie Underwood to be on Idol. That was a very uninspiring performance.

Please don't attempt dancing either.

Good song but man that wasn't very good. Stick to the radio.

Sorry, I am in a motel with a widescreen TV and I can't tell if her legs were really fat or if it was the "formatted" picture which made them appear that way.

After hearing her first two albums, I've decided that a good songwriter can take a country artist far. Because man, ANYONE could sing those songs. She has no pipes and she's decent looking and all. But meh all in all. American Idol took her from Main Street to Rodeo.
