TCY: The Appalachian State Challenge
With college football season finally here, I've been in the mood to set up a new TCY career. Yesterday's results give me a great opportunity. And so we present...
The Appalachian State Challenge The Solecismic Eight has been placed in North Carolina, and adjusted to the Southern Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision. I am assuming command of the Appalachian State Mountaineers, with one specific goal: Beat Michigan. Setup and rules for this dynasty: - Starting Lineup difficulty (it's been a while) - Hire/Fire Coaches, Suspensions, Bowl System all on. - Randomization all off. - Preferred GPA of 2.75, Test Score of 1100 (one exception allowed per recruiting season) - No bribing - We will try to schedule Michigan every season in Ann Arbor. - We will not leave Appalachian State, regardless of success, until we beat Michigan in the Big House. |

Offensive Coordinator Bert Kinney, 45 Play Calling: Excellent Injury Avoidance: Good Rehabilitation: Good Congeniality: Very Good QB Development: Decent RB Development: Fair WR Development: Good OL Development: Very Good K Development: Lousy Formation: I-Formation Experience: 5 years Defensive Coordinator Leland Bailey, 58 Play Calling: Pretty Good Injury Avoidance: Excellent Rehabilitation: Excellent Congeniality: Poor DL Development: Very Good LB Development: Poor DB Development: Good Syndicate Coordinator Rich Patterson, 70 Academic Eligibility: Terrific Syndicate Investigation: Terrible Solicit Donations: Terrible Scout - Southeast A.J. I'm not a fan of our local scout (and to be honest, the others don't quite matter for a program like ours). |

2004 Roster
Our roster, generally, sucks. I'll give a more detailed account over the next couple days, but a quick look at our likely starters: Code:
The topic of GameDay conversation, we aren't. Our default offense/defense is the I-Formation / 4-3 - I don't expect to change the offense unless our coordinator changes, but our inner defensive line is so horrid that we may need to consider a 50. |

Roster - continued
Quarterbacks Code:
We don't have much of a difficult decision to make at quarterback. Marc Battistone is a solid candidate for where we are - it's not much, but he's not too bad. His arm tails off for longer passes, and his best rating (after 47/47 Scramble Frequency) is a 31/38 in Avoid Interceptions. Kim Nelson has good potential but is exceedingly raw. Running Backs / Fullbacks Code:
A surprising pair of decent running backs. Gibson will be our starter - Humphrey looks solid, but Gunn doesn't have the bars to match the overall rating. Ernie Horn is the only FB with any sort of blocking ability, but Newsome looks like he can run the ball pretty well, so I'll change things up and start him. Wide Receivers / Tight Ends Code:
Dwayne Claridge is the best pass-catcher we have, and will hopefully be seeing a large percentage of our passes. He's not too bad of a blocker, either. Eddie Robertson and Teddy Sweeney are the starting wideouts, with Eleazer the third man. Sweeney and Eleazer are both outstanding at going over the middle - Robertson has no talent for crossing routes, but is pretty solid everywhere else - good hands, and good yards per catch. We also feature the rare 0/0 player here - Bucky Elliott. Welcome to Appalachian State. Offensive Line Code:
Up to this point, you may have thought we might have a decent offense. The offensive line has potential, but I think will prove to be the biggest weakness. Scott Humphrey is a reasonable center, although the majority of his bars are Endurance. McGee will be his backup, and may develop into a very good player in his own right. At guard, Brant Carpenter has a lot of potential, but has no development anywhere but Endurance. He's going to start, along with Lee Nixon (who has no rating above 20). The tackles are J.B. Wilkerson - again, a good bit of unrealized potential - and Marc Butler. Vic Dotson has pretty good potential himself, but isn't there yet. Kickers Code:
Shinkle and Tongue here have the obvious edge. Defensive Line Code:
The worst position group on the team. Wes Gaines has the most talent here by far - balanced between Run Defense and Pass Rush. Hitchcock will start on the other side. As much as we'd prefer to run a four-man front, it's just not doable with this set. We're going to start Ben Pereira as a single-nose in the middle, and hope - he's the most balanced of the guys we have. Linebackers Code:
Brooks and Hitchcock are the only players with any sort of development in the middle, so they're our starters. On the outside, we feature Martin Dillon - our defensive captain and the only guy we have any sort of confidence in. He's very solid in pass coverage, so will be on the strong-side. Our weakside will be Carl Logan - Flynn looks decent, but isn't ready this year. Defensive Backs Code:
Tyrus Bryant is the keystone of the defensive secondary - a pretty decent guy in coverage, stronger in man. Cascadden is decent but only that. None of our safeties stand out - Guido and Davis will be the two playing - but no particular strengths or weaknesses in coverage, so we'll stay balanced. |

Formations and Gameplans
Offense Offensively, we will run out of a standard I-Formation. We're going to focus on running the ball in most situations - expecting to result in probably 70% rushes in the first couple of games, as that is where our greatest talent is. We'll revist this once we hit the conference schedule and we start facing defenses as bad as ours. Our pass distances are going to be balanced but focused short - about one in five will be a shot downfield (20 yards+), which may still be too much. We'll run a good bit of option until our quarterback proves he's no good at it; and with a decent running fullback, we'll feed him the ball a bit to see how he does. Defense We're in a 50 formation (essentially a 3-4 with the outside linebackers brought up as almost-DEs), and that's where we'll stay - complete lack of depth means no goal-line, nickel, or dime formations. Our pass coverage will never go into 4-Deep, but is split about even between Man/Bump and Zone coverage. Our only blitzer is going to be Martin Dillon, although he doesn't do it that often. Essentially... we're going to try and hide our weaknesses as best we can on defense, and use the first three games of the season to figure out how bad we actually are on offense. |

I'd like to say "Forget Positions, we just need Talent". That said, there are 8 players graduating this season: QB Battistone QB Rudebusch RB Gibson TE Claridge OLB Logan OLB Dillon CB Bryant CB Cascadden As such, we'll try and recruit at least those numbers. A pretty solid first season, which could have been much better if we had come up with a better performance in that final regular season game. Some wasted recruiting, I think, as I was far too conservative on who to pursue until about halfway through the season - it's been a while since I played TCY, and ended up getting some players in who I don't think will eventually see much time for us.
Next year - hopefully our first matchup against Michigan! Next season: 2005 Last edited by Celeval : 09-25-2007 at 05:18 PM. |
