TCY: The Appalachian State Challenge

With college football season finally here, I've been in the mood to set up a new TCY career. Yesterday's results give me a great opportunity. And so we present...

The Appalachian State Challenge

The Solecismic Eight has been placed in North Carolina, and adjusted to the Southern Conference of the Football Championship Subdivision. I am assuming command of the Appalachian State Mountaineers, with one specific goal:

Beat Michigan.

Setup and rules for this dynasty:

- Starting Lineup difficulty (it's been a while)
- Hire/Fire Coaches, Suspensions, Bowl System all on.
- Randomization all off.

- Preferred GPA of 2.75, Test Score of 1100 (one exception allowed per recruiting season)
- No bribing

- We will try to schedule Michigan every season in Ann Arbor.
- We will not leave Appalachian State, regardless of success, until we beat Michigan in the Big House.

Since TCY is a bit out of date, a reminder of the conferences and their setup.

We actually have a pretty decent set of coaches, better than I expected. I'm not a fan of our local scout (and to be honest, the others don't quite matter for a program like ours).

2004 Roster

Our roster, generally, sucks. I'll give a more detailed account over the next couple days, but a quick look at our likely starters:

Code:
QB Marc Battistone (Sr) (26/26) RB Broderick Gibson (Sr) (38/38) FB Ernie Horn (Jr) (24/42) FL Eddie Robertson (Jr) (30/31) SE Donovan Moore (So) ( 7/14) TE Dwayne Claridge (Sr) (35/55) LT J.B. Wilkerson (Sr) (20/38) LG Brant Carpenter (Jr) (10/63) OC Scott Humphrey (Sr) (32/32) RG Lee Nixon (So) ( 9/35) RT Marc Butler (Sr) (23/33) LDE Nolan DeWolf (Sr) (22/22) LDT Nate Griffin (Fr) ( 7/ 7) RDT Marty Goodwin (Fr) ( 3/16) RDE Wes Gaines (Sr) (35/48) WOLB Leland Flynn (Fr) ( 5/20) MLB Richie Brooks (Jr) (19/19) SOLB Martin Dillon (Sr) (38/41) CB Dexter Cascadden (Sr) (27/36) CB Tyrus Bryant (Sr) (26/26) FS Sedrick Davis (Jr) (15/32) SS Brant Guido (Sr) (18/18)

The topic of GameDay conversation, we aren't.

Our default offense/defense is the I-Formation / 4-3 - I don't expect to change the offense unless our coordinator changes, but our inner defensive line is so horrid that we may need to consider a 50.

Roster - continued

Quarterbacks
Code:
Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate Battistone, Marc 19 QB Sr 26 26 Rudebusch, Doug 1 QB Sr 12 12 Nelson, Kim 15 QB* So* 7 27 Carter, Greg 11 QB* So* 5 5

We don't have much of a difficult decision to make at quarterback. Marc Battistone is a solid candidate for where we are - it's not much, but he's not too bad. His arm tails off for longer passes, and his best rating (after 47/47 Scramble Frequency) is a 31/38 in Avoid Interceptions. Kim Nelson has good potential but is exceedingly raw.

Running Backs / Fullbacks
Code:
Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate Humphrey, Glen 33 RB So* 23 52 Gibson, Broderick 36 RB Sr 38 38 Gunn, Grant 42 RB Fr 23 35 O'Neill, Bruce 32 RB Jr* 15 26 Clinton, Horace 38 RB Sr* 25 25 Horn, Ernie 46 FB Jr 24 42 Newsome, Jorge 20 FB Sr* 26 26 Osgood, Renaldo 23 FB Fr 12 16

A surprising pair of decent running backs. Gibson will be our starter - Humphrey looks solid, but Gunn doesn't have the bars to match the overall rating. Ernie Horn is the only FB with any sort of blocking ability, but Newsome looks like he can run the ball pretty well, so I'll change things up and start him.

Wide Receivers / Tight Ends
Code:
Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate Claridge, Dwayne 91 TE Sr 35 55 Sullivan, Van 89 TE So 21 44 Forbes, Norm 86 TE So 21 41 Macias, Shaun 97 TE Fr 16 20 Sweeney, Teddy 88 WR So 20 44 Eleazer, Gene 6 WR Fr 15 32 Robertson, Eddie 84 WR Jr 30 31 Moore, Donovan 4 WR So 7 14 Duran, Norman 7 WR* Fr 9 20 Marek, Doug 81 WR* Jr* 7 7 Elliott, Bucky 87 WR* Fr 0 0

Dwayne Claridge is the best pass-catcher we have, and will hopefully be seeing a large percentage of our passes. He's not too bad of a blocker, either.

Eddie Robertson and Teddy Sweeney are the starting wideouts, with Eleazer the third man. Sweeney and Eleazer are both outstanding at going over the middle - Robertson has no talent for crossing routes, but is pretty solid everywhere else - good hands, and good yards per catch. We also feature the rare 0/0 player here - Bucky Elliott. Welcome to Appalachian State.

Offensive Line
Code:
Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate McGee, Vernon 53 C So* 11 57 Flickinger, Robbie 55 C So* 13 35 Humphrey, Scott 50 C Sr* 32 32 Carpenter, Brant 73 G Jr* 10 63 Nixon, Lee 68 G So* 9 35 Grenier, Lester 70 G Jr* 17 17 Randall, Malcolm 75 G So* 7 16 Wozniczka, Pete 67 T Jr* 3 39 Wilkerson, J.B. 60 T Sr* 20 38 Butler, Marc 78 T Sr* 23 33 Dotson, Victor 65 T Fr 20 32

Up to this point, you may have thought we might have a decent offense. The offensive line has potential, but I think will prove to be the biggest weakness.

Scott Humphrey is a reasonable center, although the majority of his bars are Endurance. McGee will be his backup, and may develop into a very good player in his own right.

At guard, Brant Carpenter has a lot of potential, but has no development anywhere but Endurance. He's going to start, along with Lee Nixon (who has no rating above 20).

The tackles are J.B. Wilkerson - again, a good bit of unrealized potential - and Marc Butler. Vic Dotson has pretty good potential himself, but isn't there yet.

Kickers
Code:
Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate Shinkle, Gene 13 P Jr 36 36 Faulk, Bernard 12 P So* 15 18 Wilkerson, Bernard 18 K Fr 9 27 Tongue, Cornelius 3 K Jr 26 26

Shinkle and Tongue here have the obvious edge.

Defensive Line
Code:
Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate Gaines, Wes 90 DE Sr* 35 48 Hitchcock, Emmitt 99 DE Jr 19 36 Batten, Ed 93 DE Fr 11 34 DeWolf, Nolan 77 DE Sr* 22 22 Todd, Stan 92 DE Fr 7 18 Pereira, Ben 96 DT* Fr 4 25 Goodwin, Marty 79 DT* Fr 3 16 Griffin, Nate 72 DT* Fr 7 7 Burgess, Dave 74 DT* So* 1 6

The worst position group on the team. Wes Gaines has the most talent here by far - balanced between Run Defense and Pass Rush. Hitchcock will start on the other side.

As much as we'd prefer to run a four-man front, it's just not doable with this set. We're going to start Ben Pereira as a single-nose in the middle, and hope - he's the most balanced of the guys we have.

Linebackers
Code:
Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate Reid, John 59 ILB Jr* 8 25 Casper, Kelvin 40 ILB Jr* 7 20 Hitchcock, Tony 56 ILB Jr* 12 20 Brooks, Richie 47 ILB Jr 19 19 Dillon, Martin 49 OLB Sr 38 41 Logan, Carl 98 OLB Sr 12 12 Appleberry, Monty 95 OLB* So* 7 25 Flynn, Leland 43 OLB* Fr 5 20 Tolson, Doug 58 OLB* So* 2 19

Brooks and Hitchcock are the only players with any sort of development in the middle, so they're our starters.

On the outside, we feature Martin Dillon - our defensive captain and the only guy we have any sort of confidence in. He's very solid in pass coverage, so will be on the strong-side. Our weakside will be Carl Logan - Flynn looks decent, but isn't ready this year.

Defensive Backs
Code:
Player # Pos Elig Current Estimate Future Estimate Emmons, Chris 25 CB So 14 38 Cascadden, Dexter 37 CB Sr 27 36 Bryant, Tyrus 35 CB Sr 26 26 Andrews, Courtney 30 CB Fr 10 22 Downey, Duane 39 CB* Fr 0 28 Alcott, Patrick 41 S Fr 8 40 Davis, Sedrick 44 S Jr* 15 32 Guido, Brant 21 S Sr* 18 18 Meeber, Jermaine 27 S Fr 6 9

Tyrus Bryant is the keystone of the defensive secondary - a pretty decent guy in coverage, stronger in man. Cascadden is decent but only that.

None of our safeties stand out - Guido and Davis will be the two playing - but no particular strengths or weaknesses in coverage, so we'll stay balanced.

Formations and Gameplans

Offense

Offensively, we will run out of a standard I-Formation. We're going to focus on running the ball in most situations - expecting to result in probably 70% rushes in the first couple of games, as that is where our greatest talent is. We'll revist this once we hit the conference schedule and we start facing defenses as bad as ours.

Our pass distances are going to be balanced but focused short - about one in five will be a shot downfield (20 yards+), which may still be too much.

We'll run a good bit of option until our quarterback proves he's no good at it; and with a decent running fullback, we'll feed him the ball a bit to see how he does.

Defense

We're in a 50 formation (essentially a 3-4 with the outside linebackers brought up as almost-DEs), and that's where we'll stay - complete lack of depth means no goal-line, nickel, or dime formations. Our pass coverage will never go into 4-Deep, but is split about even between Man/Bump and Zone coverage. Our only blitzer is going to be Martin Dillon, although he doesn't do it that often.

Essentially... we're going to try and hide our weaknesses as best we can on defense, and use the first three games of the season to figure out how bad we actually are on offense.

2004 Recruiting

I'd like to say "Forget Positions, we just need Talent".

That said, there are 8 players graduating this season:

QB Battistone
QB Rudebusch
RB Gibson
TE Claridge
OLB Logan
OLB Dillon
CB Bryant
CB Cascadden

As such, we'll try and recruit at least those numbers.

Surprisingly, we have two recruits who can't wait to get here and idolize Appalachian State:

P Ross Dutton - Taylorsville, NC
88th ranked Punter
5th ranked Punter in North Carolina
Overall: 29/100

8th ranked CB in North Carolina
Overall: 27/100
Strength: Defending the Run
Weakness: Interceptions
Academics: Do not Qualify (2.57 GPA, 996 Test Score)

Dutton will be one of our initial targets, but I'm not happy with Shepard as our one academic exemption. We're using the first week to get in touch with some of the guys who made our list - we have 24 scholarships available to offer, but a maximum of 16 available roster slots.

13 ranked Defensive Tackle in North Carolina
Overall: 25/100
Strength: Rushing the Passer

7th ranked Safety in North Carolina
Overall: 25/100
Strength: Zone Defense
Weakness: Defending the Run
Academics: Qualify

S Danny Leon - Orlando, FL
17th ranked Safety in Florida
Overall: 19/100

74 ranked player in North Carolina
13th ranked T in North Carolina
Overall: 38/100

Weakness: Pass Protection
Academics: Qualify

One player we've visited at home and haven't yet invited to campus:

WR Carlos Poff - Salisbury, NC

Injuries
After a healthy first week against Nebraska, we got hit hard by injuries against Memphis. The biggest loss is possibly our best player - OLB Martin Dillon tore his knee up pretty bad, and is out for the rest of his career thanks to ACL damage. Leland Flynn steps into his starting role.

Starting G Brant Carpenter is out four weeks with a hyperextended knee, we will shift freshman tackle Vic Dotson into that role until he returns.

Starting DT Ben Pereira is questionable with a knee injury as well - Marty Goodwin steps in.

A pretty solid first season, which could have been much better if we had come up with a better performance in that final regular season game. Some wasted recruiting, I think, as I was far too conservative on who to pursue until about halfway through the season - it's been a while since I played TCY, and ended up getting some players in who I don't think will eventually see much time for us.

Next year - hopefully our first matchup against Michigan!

Next season: 2005
