Do optical mice wear out?

Had mine for about 2 1/2 years and it seems to be not quite what it used to be and the batteries seem to wear out quicker. Is it just my imagination because I covet a shiny new mouse or do these things wear?

Batteries? What batteries?

The buttons will wear out, and I suppose the optical outlet could get dirty.

Wireless?

I have a track ball and I have to pop the ball out occasionally and clean the filth out.

They can over time, but most of them last for years.

Yeah, it's wireless. I guess it could be the buttons wearing, there are actually spots where the finish has worn away where my finger sits.

My first optical mouse lasted me over 6 years. Although I did end up replacing the pads on the bottom of it so it would slide better.

I use rechargeable batteries and I see them die a little quicker now but that's because they're rechargable batteries and they lose charge over time.
