Reshuffling the Cards: Starting in 1987 (OOTP6.5)

The way I remember it, the St. Louis Cardinals were robbed in 1985 of the World Series title and then slumped through the entire 1986 season. I mean, it wasn't totally their fault. Jack Clark was injured and Andy Van Slyke led the team in home runs with something like 15. No one really hit well. It kind of reminded me of the '65 Dodger offense. It probably wouldn't have mattered, the '86 Mets ran away with it and the Cards finished about 160 games out of first.

In this simulation, 10 year old Ardent Enthusiast somehow lands the job after Whitey Herzog and company resign following the ’86 season. Think of something crazy, like that movie that ESPN used to show with the kid manager. That crazy.

Anyhow, I’m not powerful enough as a 10 year old to keep management from making the Tony Pena deal, though I’m sure if I could I’d object.

I'll provide month to month updates.

I do make one deal as we leave spring training. I trade outfielder David Green (a guy I don't remember) for prospect Shawn Abner. I'm a bit of a homer. I remember the Score baseball card that made me believe Abner was going to be a stud. He probably won't pan out but he'll live and die in my minor league systerm.

The starting rotation:

Tudor is our ace, but Cox is right behind him. I'm not a Cox fan by memory of my childhood, but that stemmed from what happened from the '87 WS on. Since I'm rewriting, I have to forget that. Forsch...I can't believe he's still around. Magrane and Mathews aren't highly rated in the game and that disappoints me. We'll see how they pan out.

The baseball cards are a great touch - even if it's a dirty bird dynasty...

Bullpen:

The Cards were blessed with strong pitching, including the bullpen. I remember the days of Dayley and Worrell vividly.

I'll use sort of a bullpen by committee approach. The closer is clearly Todd Worrell, but I'll do my best to make sure the rest of the men get equal work.

Thanks. I'm a little disappointed I can't find cards online for Perry and Tunnell. I found one of Worrell, but it wouldn't have matched up well with the other pictures.

The starting lineup:

I recall Coleman leading off, Ozzie batting 2nd, Herr 3rd, Clark 4th, McGee 5th. After that, it's a little fuzzy. I can't recall a regular right fielder until Brunansky came over from the Twins. Ford and Lindeman will platoon in right for now. I'll insert Ford as the opening day starter and bat 6th. Pena will catch and bat 7th. Pendleton, who struggled through '86, bats 8th.

The bench:

Lindeman is the other half of the platoon in right. Steve Lake is the backup catcher. Jose Oquendo is the super utility man. Rod Booker makes the team as another backup infielder...beating out Tom Lawless. I recall Lawless playing more positions than the game has him for. If Lawless played all or most of the infield like Booker, he'd have made the team. Dan Driessen makes the squad as a backup first baseman. John Morris is our first pinch hitter off the bench. I expect to use him almost daily.

Thoughts about April:

We lost the first game of the year when Worrell allowed a home run to open up the 9th.

Pat Perry was blown up in that game and never recovered. I've been trying to give him every opportunity to get his ERA down, but every time he takes a step forward, he takes one back. His ERA leveled out and never really lowered. I'll keep him around for another month to try and give him every opportunity to succeed.

John Morris hasn't worked out as the main pinch hitter. Oquendo has succeeded, though. Maybe I'll split it up and let Morris be the main man against righties and give him rest against the lefties.

Booker started out something gruesome like 0-14 as he started at short for an injured Ozzie. Three days before Ozzie came back Rod lit it up, but too late for us.

Lee Tunnell started out well but got touched up his last few outings.

Headlines for May, 1987:

May 3rd: George Brett hits for the cycle.

May 13th: Don Robinson's career is over due to bone chips in his shoulder. On the same day, Mike Schmidt laces his 2000th hit...against Danny Cox and my Cardinals.

May 15th: Dale Sveum hits for the cycle.

May 18th: I turn 11. I also garner an 18 year old girlfriend. Apparently there are no laws against this in 1987.

Welcome to the team: Dave Gumpert

Gumpert was claimed off of waivers late in the month and Perry was finally sent down. Gumpert hasn't impressed in his limited work. I'm hoping he'll do better next month.

Thoughts for the month:

We improved slightly, yet fell back two games to those friggin Mets. Jack Clark worked hard to keep us competitive. I'd hate to think how we'd be doing without him.

Morris definitely improved his pinch hitting. Thank goodness.

Hopefully, Gumpert helps improve our bullpen situation (Perry has an ERA over 9 in 4 appearances in AAA, btw).

Thoughts for June:

Maybe there's nothing I can do to catch those friggin Mets. I wish I had seen Tom Glavine on the waiver wire. That would have been an interesting catch.

I keep getting garbage offers...right fielders for Johnson, Pagnozzi, and Peters. Ugh.

I'm not sure what I can do to improve, other than replace Bob Forsch in the rotation and get a solid right fielder.

Gumpert was eaten up in 2 games, giving up 11 earned in 2/3 of an inning. He's since calmed down again.

Thoughts through July:

I felt like I needed to make a move to try and stay competitive. When Curt Ford tore a thigh muscle (and he's still out for a few weeks), I knew it was time. Trading Herr away wasn't so hard with Booker and Oquendo playing well off the bench. I tried shopping both, along with Lance Johnson, but didn't find much interest.

When I asked about Herr, California was willing to put up both Harvey and White. I put in Gumpert as well and that garnere me Buice.

Buice and Harvey helped stabilize the bullpen...if only I could stabilize Forsch and Mathews. White hasn't been the presence in the lineup I had hoped for, but he's contributing more than Ford/Lindeman. Oquendo is doing as well as Herr was.

I doubt I can make a strong run so far out with 2 months to go, but I'll give it a go.

Magrane, by the way, won pitcher of the month this month.

Dang, I remember watching the Astros and Bill Doran. But then again, I know AE despises the Astros.

Interesting enough, I know one of Doran's nephews through the Navy.

Alright, so I suck. We end up hitting a skid in August and what little hope we had to sneak back in disappeared.

The only news you need to know:

Andre Thornton retired from the Indians...Magrane ends his season with a pulled bicep.

Ford returns from the DL...and we bring up Landrum, Perry, and Tunnell. Tunnell will go into the rotation this time around.

No stats until the end of the year.

Heh, I'm not sure I'll keep this up now. I'm not sure I understand the financial model of the game. Before the season ended, I checked to see who potential free agents were on the team.

I saw Tony Pena and Dan Driessen. Not a big deal, I thought.

I lost Willie McGee and Ken Dayley to free agency. I'm not a happy camper.

Thank blows. Well, there's always the angle that this was the dream sequence and you wake up managing the 07 Cards.
