Mount Rushmore of Punk & Hardcore Bands

Always a sap for the hardcore genre and sometimes it's ugly big brother Punk music I've become inspired to start this Mount Rushmore of hardcore & punk bands.

Not sure how much participation we'll see in this one but regardless, here is my Mount Rushmore:

Bad Brains
Minor Threat
Black Flag
D.O.A

To elaborate further on my choices:

Bad Brains may be one of the most underrated bands ever. They, before the Jai Calling days, produced some incredibly intricate songs that were never thought to be possible in hardcore/punk. Not only were they musically tight but being for black guys in what is best considered 99% white scene, they broke down racial barriers as well.

Minor Threat is associated with two words: straight edge. Ian Mackaye and company built a culture that still thrives today. Whether you agree with it or not they made it cool to be that guy or girl who just says no to drugs and alcohol. Not only that but they wrote some songs still in circulation today and are a main source of inspiration for most authentic hardcore bands out there today.

Black Flag tore down walls and branched the scene all over the USA. DIY, or do it yourself became the bands calling card as they'd routinely go from DC to LA and back playing any place they could for little money just because they loved it. One of the more political bands in hardcore, frontman Henry Rollins is still active today in numerous political and entertainment projects today showing that DIY is still as big a part of society now as it was then.

D.O.A are just some bastards from Vancouver that were the band for Canadian punk and hardcore in the 80s. They actually coined the phrase hardcore with one of their 7" releases and just like that a new movement and scene was born.

Dischord deserves its own place I think, with great bands like Government Issue, Scream, Happy Go Licky - how could you choose just one?
Bad Religion
Dead Kennedys
Choking Victim/INDK/Crack Rock Steady/etc. collective of beautiful incestuousness.

I am only a pseudo punk fan that has some punk albums that he loves but doesn't know the "scene" at all. So I will just watch from the sidelines.

How many posts until people start debating which bands are "punk" and which ones are not?

Dunno if The Clash are considered "punk", but if they are, they are absolutely on the list or the list is invalid.

This is a great post. I'm not even saying I agree with it, but it is a great post nonetheless.

I think you have this confused with the Mount Rushmore of Grindcore Bands.

Grindcore is a sub-genre of death metal. Plus, I was going for something that had "core" in it.

GG makes it just cause I'd like to see a rock carving of the cobra tattoo on his forehead. Otherwise I was a little torn between Bad Religion and Minor Threat for the 4th spot. I actually like Bad Religion more, but they have now sucked way longer than they were good.
