A Statistical Analysis of the QoTM

I decided to run a little test to see what would happen. I hit the refresh key 100 times. The following quotes came up more than once:

"just get rid of the kleenex quote and I'll be happy" -stkelly52

60 times


"With all the power vested in me by someone....." - Fritz

3 times


"Well, whattaya know...cocky and funny....it really works" - AnalBumCover

2 times



I'll let you figure out the moral of this story.

seriously though, why in the world did the new kleenex quote replace the old one as the most frequently seen?

A lot of people had explanations for the the first quote as being the first quote entered or such nonsense. I could even understand if it was picking a quote that was somewhere special in the list... but how can anyone possible explain the new kleenex quote replacing the old one?

Because the FOFC is a Kleenex type of board.

'Cause when SD/Ryan added the new Kleenex quote, it appears that he overwrote the old Kleenex quote, or deleted it then added the new quote, which assumed the position of the old Kleenex quote in the database. Either way, we're boned.

Maybe Kodos could do a weekly poll of the best quotes and we could just have a new "No. 1" quote every week.

Note to Kodos: I'm kidding.

Dola -- It may also be in the way the quote hack is coded on our pages. Over at one of the vB support sites, it seems to indicate that if you don't use RAND () then the script will cycle automatically to the first or last quote selected. In our case, it's the first quote.

here is how it worked:

there are imaginary slots lets slay. first slot, easy macs quote. the slots fill up in numerical order.

so 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

there are 10 quotes. say #7 gets deleted. instead of the next quote being #11, it is #7, so although it is the 11th quote all-time to be added, it drops in at 7.

so, when easy's quote was deleted, coincidentally, stkelly's kleenex quote was the next to be added!

i can post a concern over at the creator's forums, but like i did before, he said that the best thing to do is just wait it out until a large number of quotes are in the database (i'm guessing 100-150?)

anyone want to quickly count how many quotes are currently in the qotm?

looks like 145 to me.

30 per page (only counted page 1)

4 full pages, 25 quotes on page 5.

We never had this problem on the FOBL board and we're using the same software ("Ultimate Quotes List Hack created by KuraFire for the Couch") and only have approx ~124 quotes. Maybe this wasn't implemented correctly here...

i would redo it, but i am restricted for certain things and this is one of the things i cannot toy with..
