Thanksgiving Tragedy For Friends Of My In-Laws

My wife's parents ended up leaving here a day early, driving to Columbia yesterday afternoon because of tragedy striking the family of probably their closest friends. Their friends' son-in-law went into colvusions and died from a massive heart attack while the entire family was gathered for Thanksgiving. I am told he was somewhere in the 35-40 age range, and in what was thought to be excellent physical condition. He and his wife had two small children, ages 4ish and 6ish. My wife wasn't able to talk with her folks last night, so we don't know all of the details, but of course it is assumed that the children were in the house, and may well have been in the room when this occurred.

My sympathies to them. A situation like this is bad any time, but it's especially bad this time of the year.

Very sad news. If the children were in the room, I'd highly recommend counseling whether it be via a skilled clergy person or a therapist.

As a 33yo with kids of four and six, I can't think of much worse to happen on a family level. My thoughts are with them.

It turns out the kids (actually ages 5 and 7) weren't in the room at that particular moment, but heard all the commotion, were whisked away, saw the distress of grandmother, heard the ambulance and rescue team coming, etc. They asked yesterday to be taken to the morgue to see their father one last time. I do not know at this point whether or not their request was honored, but the family was definitely leaning toward taking them.

It's weird, SWMBO and I have been sort of agents of mercy to those grieving in several out-of-season deaths in the past 3 1/2 years, with our families in different cities "supporting" us. This time, we're "supporting" her parents, who are the agents of mercy in this situation. (Ironically, at their age, neither of them has ever had a good friend dealing with an out-of-season death). We know her parents' friends on a social level, but I never met the guy who died, or his wife and kids. Still, because of her parents' involvement, it feels quite close to home for both of us.
