Slavery was bad and our great great grandfathers shouldn't have done it but nobody alive right now in America has ever owned a slave (I hope) so nobody today is guilty of those crimes. That's basically what it comes down to.

Not to get too much in the middle of a perfectly good flame war but can I point out that while African Americans were slaves here, my Lithuanian ancestors were peasants in (basically feudal) czarist Russia so I'm not sure we had it much better between, say, 1600 and 1900.

The point was twofold:

1) Almost everyone had it rough 300 years ago. It was a time when it sucked to be alive, for the most part. There was the small percentage of the population which was rich, a small percentage of merchant/tradeskills caste, and then there was everyone else. And everyone else was pretty much slaves the world 'round. So let's not act like one plight was so much worse than others or that it was even dissimilar.

2) Then there's the always subtle but always present racist implications in every discussion about the evils of the past, be it slavery or the decimation of the Native American population or whatever, that the monolithic evil known as the "white man" was out there doing it as if there was a giant secret meeting every month and we all have headcount votes to decide which race we're going to go after until the next meeting. That's where those comments about "every day is European day" and crap like that come from.
