Week 23

Trailblazers @ Clippers

1st Quarter - Trailblazers 27, Clippers 25
A hard fought quarter where both teams were shooting the lights out towards the end. This was the Caleb Hammonds show, as he finishes the quarter with 15 points and 4 rebounds. The Blazers were led by SF Drew Mobley with 7 points.

At the Half - Trailblazers 49, Clippers 44
They're quite outperforming us, but we're managing to hang with them through the sheer power that is Caleb Hammonds. He's got 23 with 9 rebounds at the half, just a monster half. Blazers C Luis Schell has 12 points in 12 minutes to lead his team.

3rd Quarter - Clippers 73, Trailblazers 72
We actually looked like we were pulling away this quarter, but the Blazers clawed their way back. Caleb Hammonds continues to dominate, with 36 points 11 rebounds. Fabrizio has 14 with 6 assists. Schell has 15 points 12 rebounds for the Blazers.

Final - Trailblazers 94, Clippers 92
Not tonight. We fell just short here. I guess Hammonds can't just carry this team.

Clippers Leaders
PF Hammonds - 45 points, 14 rebounds PLAYER OF THE GAME
SF St. John - 15 points
PG Fabrizio - 14 points, 9 assists

Trailblazers Leaders
C Carr - 18 points, 7 rebounds
C Schell - 18 points

Rest of the Week
Rockets 91, Clippers 81
We lose to a very hot team. I'm resigned to the lottery now, so each loss is a mixed blessing. Hopefully I can grab an impact player in the draft. Hammonds had 21 and 9 boards, but Rockets SF Philip Yong again rips us up for 27 points.

Magic 108, Clippers 103
A good effort, but not enough. Hammonds notches 28 and grabs 12 boards, and Fabrizio scores 20 with 9 assists. Magic C Jerod Brady takes us to town for 29 points and 7 rebounds.

Record After the Week: 32-48, 9 games out of the playoffs

NBA Player of the Week
Magic C Jerod Brady wins his 2nd PoW Award this year, and the 3rd of his career. The Magic are clawing for one of the remaining spots in the East.

Week 24

Bucks @ Clippers

1st Quarter - Bucks 32, Clippers 22
We're lucky to be in this as much as we are. Hammonds has 10 points 3 rebounds, but he's the only one working. I've got to get him some help this offseason. Bucks SG Wesley Jordan leads his team with 8 points.

At the Half - Bucks 46, Clippers 43
Hammonds is having another gread game, with 20 points and 9 rebounds. Fabrizio has 13 with 5 assists. The Bucks are having a balanced game, unlike us, and are led by C Gavin Storm's 9 points and 6 rebounds.

3rd Quarter - Bucks 71, Clippers 63
This is just a really unispired game. I feel like my boys are phoning this one in, and frankly, so am I to a degree. Hammonds goes scoreless in the 3rd, but Zack Horry now has 11 points 10 rebounds. SF Jamal Molina leads the Bucks with 15.

Final - Bucks 99, Clippers 84
Next.

Clippers Leaders
PF Hammonds - 31 points, 15 rebounds PLAYER OF THE GAME
C Horry - 14 points, 12 rebounds
PG Fabrizio - 17 points, 8 assists

Bucks Leaders
SF Molina - 21 points, 9 rebounds

Rest of the Week
Clippers 96, Heat 92
We end the season on a high note, with a win. Hammonds leads with 28 points 12 rebounds. Heat C Earvin Mandarang puts up 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Final Record: 33-49, 9 games out of the playoffs

NBA Player of the Week
Hornets PG Joesph Hernandez wins the Award for the first time in his career. The 31 year old is averaging 15.1 points and 7.2 assists per game.

Year End Awards Ceremony

NBA Defensive Player of the Year
Warriors PF Malik Douglas gets the nod as Defensive Player of the Year this year. Douglas, a big 6'11" power forward, was a serious prescence in the paint this year for the Warriors, along with teammate C Dominic Ellis. Douglas grabbed 12.1 rebounds per game this season and led the league with 3.9 blocks per game.

NBA Rookie of the Year
The best rookie was named to be Los Angeles Clippers PG David Fabrizio. As you've all read, Fabrizio has been a huge part of an admittedly bad team this season. He proved to be an effective playmaker and has the ability to score with abandon. However, he's going to have to learn to keep a better hold on the ball, as his 3.9 turnovers per game led the league this season.

NBA Sixth Man of the Year
Grizzlies backup PF Carl Traylor gets the Sixth Man Award for the first time in his career. The 29 year old Traylor averaged 10.0 ppg 8.0 rpg in 27.3 minutes a game. He'll be a free agent this offseason.

All-Defense Team
Ivan Longley C Spurs
PF Malik Douglas Warriors
SF Alan Whitney Timberwolves
SG Trevor Goodrich Jazz
PG Aaron Benjamin Bulls

All-Rookie Team
C Brian Bibby Wizards
PF Isaac Quigly Lakers
SF Mason Ratliff Celtics
SG Joseph Rupp Nets
PG David Fabrizio Clippers

All-NBA First Team
C Jerod Brady, Magic
Brady had a magnficent sophomore season, and it ended with him being named the best center in the game (he was Third team last season). His final stats were 24.3 ppg 11.3 ppg 2.9 bpg.

PF Malik Douglas, Warriors
Douglas was a huge offensive and defensive prescence for the Warriors. On top of the defensive stats mentioned above, he also added 17.1 points per game this season. This is his first ever All-NBA Team selection.

SF Alan Whitney, Timberwolves
Whitney once again led the league in scoring this season, but his team is terrible so he probably takes an inordinate amount of shots. This is his fifth All-NBA selection, fourth straight 1st team selection. He finished with 30.7 ppg 7.2 rpg, but a Fabrizioesque 3.8 turnovers per game as well.

SG Devon Marion, 76ers
Marion is named to his fourth straight 1st Team All NBA Team. I still find this to be a dubious choice, as he only is averaging 19.3 ppg 6.5 rpg this season, although in fairness those were up in the second half of the season. I thought this would be Cavs SG Jessie Mann's time to shine, but maybe the voters have a little nostalgia for the 33 year old.

PG Jordan Malone, Jazz
This is Malone's fifth time being All-NBA, but first 1st Team selection since 1996. Malone was his usual excellent self this season, finishing with 27.2 ppg, 8.9 apg, and 5.1 rpg. He lead the Jazz to the best regular season record this year and hopes to lead them to a third straight NBA Title.

All-NBA Second Team
C Jerry Carr Trailblazers
PF Caleb Hammonds Clippers
SF Micah Bullard Bulls
SG Jessie Mann Cavaliers
PG Nick Stockton Suns

All-NBA Third Team
C Drew Hepbron Rockets
PF Daniel Ilgauskus Spurs
SF Trenton Perkins Hornets
SG Alfonso McGuire Nuggets
PG Aaron Benjamin Bulls

The 2000-2001 NBA Most Valuable Player Award
There were only two real candidates for the MVP Award this season, and Nick Stockton broke his leg at the end and his team fell off, while Jazz PG Jordan Malone played his best down the stretch and gave his team homecourt throughout the playoffs. A two-time Playoffs MVP, Malone is now a two-time Regular Season MVP as well, having taken home the award back in 1996.

#1 Cavaliers vs. #8 Celtics

Tale of the Tape

Celtics
Regular Season record: 40-42
Points per Game: 90.6 (29th)
Opponents points per game: 92.6 (6th)
Leading Scorer: SF Mason Ratliff - 19.1 ppg
Leading Rebounder: PF Cory Drew - 10.0 rpg
Leading Passer: PG Corey Shireman - 8.3 apg

The Celtics play a tough defensive game, but struggle to put points on the board. Mason Ratliff was quite the surprise for them this season, picked at #23, but he is really the only effective shooter they have.

Cavaliers
Regular Season record: 50-32
Points per Game: 106.3 (2nd)
Opponents points per game: 101.3 (15th)
Leading Scorer: SG Jessie Mann - 25.6 ppg
Leading Rebounder: PF Caleb Coleman - 11.1 rpg
Leading Passer: PG Eric Macauley - 7.3 apg

The Cavs are a big time scoring team, led by Mann and Macauley. They shoot the ball with great accuracy, and could go fairly far in these playoffs. I think I've shortchanged them in the past. SF Cody Lewis is back for the playoffs.

Prediction: Cavaliers in 4

Game 1: Cavaliers 113, Celtics 81
That was a big time statement game for the Cavs. They just whooped on the Celtics, as Mann, Macauley, and Lewis all score over 17 points. Mason Ratliff counters with 17, but I think the Cavs just won the series in the first game. It's gotta be a demoralizing loss.

Game 2: Cavaliers 117, Celtics 86
Another big time win for the Cavs. The Celtics defense has crumbled against the Cavs superior offense. Jessie Mann had a big game, with 33 and 15 boards from the 2-spot. Mason Ratliff, with 19, is trying but the rest of the team just isn't there.

Game 3: Cavaliers 113, Celtics 91
Wow, all three of these games have gone in a very similar fashion. Eric Macauley was the star here, hitting the Celtics for 43 points. Celtics C Logan Dooling led the losers with 16 points 10 rebounds.

Game 4: Celtics 111, Cavaliers 106
I guess Celtic Pride does exist, as they fight their way to avoiding a sweep. Jessie Mann scored 41 for the Cavs, but Mason Ratliff answered with 30 himself.

Game 5: Cavaliers 127, Celtics 91
Jessie Mann puts the Celtics out to pasture, scoring 48 points. He's had an incredible first round. The Celtics tried, but they're so obviously outclassed here.

Cavaliers win the series, 4 games to 1

#4 Hornets vs. #5 Bulls

Tale of the Tape

Hornets
Regular Season record: 49-33
Points per Game: 101.4 (5th)
Opponents points per game: 100.5 (24th)
Leading Scorer: SF Trenton Perkins - 21.9 ppg
Leading Rebounder: C Isidoro Peeler - 11.1 rpg
Leading Passer: PG Joseph Hernandez - 7.2 apg

The Hornets are a very good team on offensive, with a bunch of different weapons. They have four players in their starting 5 averaging over 15 points a game (Perkins, SG Kenyon Patterson, PG Joseph Hernandez, and PF Samuel Bing). Will it be enough to take down a loaded Bulls team?

Bulls
Regular Season record: 46-36
Points per Game: 100.5 (5th)
Opponents points per game: 98.3 (15th)
Leading Scorer: SF Micah Bullard - 25.0 ppg
Leading Rebounder: PF Marvin Williamson - 12.3 rpg
Leading Passer: PG Aaron Benjamin - 8.6 apg

The Bulls can run with the Hornets as far as scoring goes, and play better defense. They're the better team here, led by Bullard and Benjamin and C Albie Griffin.

Prediction: Bulls in 6

Game 1: Bulls 98, Hornets 88
That went about how I figured it would. Micah Bullard had 34 points and 9 rebounds, while the Hornets were led by Joesph Hernandez's 23 points.

Game 2: Bulls 104, Hornets 97
The Bulls go into New Orleans and steal the first two games of the series. Micah Bullard again was huge, pouring in 37 points. The Hornets were led by Trenton Perkins 25 points and 17 rebounds.

Game 3: Hornets 111, Bulls 105
Finally the Hornets are up to task. Bing and Perkins both had 22 points as the Hornets outplayed and outrebounded the Bulls. C Albie Griffin led the Bulls with 28.

Game 4: Hornets 103, Bulls 101
The Hornets directly return the favor to the Bulls at the United Center. Another great offensive effort, as Trenton Perkins leads his team with 23 points. Bulls SG Larry Springer scored 22 in the defeat.

Game 5: Bulls 101, Hornets 96
Wow, no one can win on their homecourt here. Albie Griffin led a very balanced Bulls offense with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Hornets C Joshua Springer scored 20 points to lead his team.

Game 6: Bulls 133, Hornets 90
The Bulls make a statement game here, winning in front of the homecrowd in impressive fashion. Albie Griffin had 33 and Micah Bullard 31 in the blowout victory. Trenton Perkins scored 22 for the Hornets as they pack their bags and go home.

Bulls win the series 4 games to 2

#2 Wizards vs. #7 Magic

Tale of the Tape

Wizards
Regular Season record: 47-35
Points per Game: 93.1 (23rd)
Opponents points per game: 92.1 (3rd)
Leading Scorer: SG Hahn Fuller, PF Carlos Boykins - 18.2 ppg
Leading Rebounder: PF Carlos Boykins - 11.8 rpg
Leading Passer: PG Jason Aridge - 7.4 apg

The Wizards relied on great defense and veteran scoring to get this the second seed in the playoffs. Will it be enough? They still don't impress me a great deal, but they did win the Atlantic. The upstart Magic look to derail the Wizards before they can make a name for themselves.

Magic
Regular Season record: 41-41
Points per Game: 97.4 (13th)
Opponents points per game: 93.5 (6th)
Leading Scorer: C Jerod Brady - 24.3 ppg
Leading Rebounder: C Jerod Brady - 11.3 rpg
Leading Passer: PG Jesus Roberson - 9.5 apg

Looking at the East as a whole, I honestly think that this is the team I would least like to play, even if they're just the number 7 seed. They've got all the pieces: good scores, good defenders, and Roberson is a good playmaker. The Magic made the finals last year; can they do it again?

Prediction: Magic in 6

Game 1: Magic 101, Wizards 81
The Magic showed in Game 1 that they will not be taken lightly in this playoff series. The Magic, who led the entire way, were led by SG Ricky Steitz's 27 points. Hahn Fuller got 19 on 40% shooting for the Wizards.

Game 2: Magic 107, Wizards 100 - OT
The Magic gut out an OT win to take a 2-0 lead looking at two home games coming up. They're in an enviable position, as they look to have the Wizards beat here. Ricky Steitz again scores 27, while Hahn Fuller answers with 31 in defeat.

Game 3: Magic 90, Wizards 75
Well, the sword of Damocles is hanging over Hahn Fuller and the Wizards. They've played two unispired games and lost the other in a heartbreaker, and now they've dug a deep hole. Six Magic scored in double figures, while Hahn Fuller was the sole Wizards highlight with 32.

Game 4: Magic 103, Wizards 84
Ouch, the #2 seed Wizards get swept by the Magic. Can't say I'm overly surprised, but how did the Wizards win all those regular season games then? Jerod Brady finishes off a muted round with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Hahn Fuller's luck ran out as he got 7 on 25% shooting.

Magic win the Series 4 games to 0

#3 Raptors vs. #6 76ers

Tale of the Tape

Raptors
Regular Season record: 50-32
Points per Game: 99.2 (10th)
Opponents points per game: 94.5 (7th)
Leading Scorer: PG Jay Cheaney - 18.9 ppg
Leading Rebounder: C Devon Outlaw - 12.3 rpg
Leading Passer: PG Jay Cheaney - 7.9 apg

The Raptors are a very solid team. Devon Outlaw is a huge defensive prescence in the paint, and Jay Cheaney is a deft outside threat. If rising star PF Trenton Cann (16.3 ppg) has a big series, the Raptors could start rollin' towards the Finals.

76ers
Regular Season record: 42-40
Points per Game: 103.3 (4th)
Opponents points per game: 102.3 (28th)
Leading Scorer: SF Tim Mikan - 20.8 ppg
Leading Rebounder: C Luis Szcerbiak - 9.8 rpg
Leading Passer: PG Shane Norris - 6.6 apg

I don't think the 76ers are a quality playoff team. They don't rebound well, nor do the get a lot of assists. They are lead by veteran swingman Mikan and SG Devon Marion. They don't play any sort of defense to speak of, but are capable of putting up some points.

Prediction: Raptors in 5

Game 1: Raptors 113, 76ers 96
There's the lack of defense for ya. The Raptors are led by Jay Cheaney's 25 and Devon Outlaw's 17 points and 15 rebounds. The team shot 27 of 29 from the stripe, and that was the major difference in this game. Mikan led the 76ers with 20.

Game 2: Raptors 120, 76ers 115
Again the 76ers can score, but can't stop the Raptors at all. Jay Cheneay leads the Raptors with 25 points and 12 assists. Devon Outlaw adds 17 and 13 rebounds. Devon Marion leads the Sixers with 29 points.

Game 3: 76ers 107, Raptors 96
SF Curt Padgett scores 22 in 15 minutes off the bench to spark the Game 3 win for the Sixers. The Raptors were led by 20 from Trenton Cann.

Game 4: Raptors 114, 76ers 74
Well, the Raptors just destroyed any chance of the Sixers getting back in this one. Jay Cheaney netted 40 points and Trenton Cann got 31 and 23 rebounds in a monster game. Devon Marion got 20 points in the loss.

Game 5: Raptors 100, 76ers 73
Jay Cheaney finishes off a poor shooting 76er team, netting 36 points and 10 rebounds. Devon Outlaw gets 20 with 17 boards. Shane Norris was the Sixers leader with 17.

Raptors win the series 4 games to 1

#1 Jazz vs. #8 Grizzlies

Tale of the Tape

Jazz
Regular Season record: 57-25
Points per Game: 108.0 (1st)
Opponents points per game: 96.4 (15th)
Leading Scorer: PG Jordan Malone - 27.2 ppg
Leading Rebounder: PF Evan Radejevic - 11.6 rpg
Leading Passer: PG Jordan Malone - 8.9 apg

Can anyone stop the Jazz from 3-peating? I don't think the Grizzlies will be the team to do it, that's for sure. This team has scored 12 more points than its opponents in games this season. That's incredible. Their explosive offense not only starts with Malone, but SG Trevor Goodrich and Radejevic also can be counted on for 15+ a game. This team is scary good.

Grizzlies
Regular Season record: 42-40
Points per Game: 100.5 (7th)
Opponents points per game: 101.5 (26th)
Leading Scorer: PG Dustin Olsen - 22.7 ppg
Leading Rebounder: C Nathan Voskuhl - 9.4 rpg
Leading Passer: PG Dustin Olson - 7.7 apg

The Grizzlies will play the role of first round victims. I don't even think they'll go down swinging. This team is not really very talented, and kind of stumbled into the playoffs. They do have a good and deep bench, with 6 Grizzlies averaging in double figures throughout the season.

Prediction: Jazz in 4

Game 1: Jazz 100, Grizzlies 66
The Grizzlies shot 30 percent in this game and just got dominated by the superior Jazz. Jordan Malone led the way with 27 points and 12 assists, and two bench players for the Jazz scored in double digits. The Grizzlies had no highlights.

Game 2: Jazz 99, Grizzlies 90
At least they put a better effort up here. Jordan Malone dominates with 34 points 11 rebounds and 8 assists. The Grizzlies need someone to take over the games for them, as they are led by Vohskul with only 17.

Game 3: Jazz 110, Grizzlies 102
Malone has 24 and Goodrich adds 23 in another excellent Jazz performance. Vohskul leads the Grizzlies with 18 and 13 rebounds.

Game 4: Grizzlies 113, Jazz 105
The Grizzlies managed to avoid the sweep by virtue of Dustin Olsen scoring 34 and someone finally stepping up for the team. Malone was fantastic, with 31 points 10 assists and 8 rebounds in the losing effort.

Game 5: Jazz 113, Grizzlies 86
The Grizzlies go out with a whimper. Goodrich scores 21 and Malone gets 16 assists in the series ending victory. Alexis Crotty scored 19 in the final Grizzlies game of the season.

Jazz win the series 4 games to 1
