Pujols is the greatest player I've ever seen. I used to think McGwire was something special, but Pujols can do things that still make me shake my head is disbelief.
..and to think he only got a chance because Bonilla got hurt in preseason.. I mean, he would have eventually came up, but LaRussa planned on starting him in AAA that year. |

This has got to be the most disturbing collapse I have seen any of my teams make, and I'm a Univ of Michigan fan who suffered through a pre-season rank of #3 last year, only to go 7-5. I can't wait to see Marquis pitching in AAA next year where he belongs (after he signs a deal with a team stupid enough to think they can "correct" him, but one month into the season he gets waived or the "Designated for Assignment" slapped on him) And in all honesty, I would actually be glad the Cards didn't make it so I didn't have to watch this waste of talent, but I hate the Astros more than any other professional team in sports right now. (You're obviously a good team! Quit tanking the first 4 months of the season every single year! It's just as awful as this collapse) I was very hesitant for this season when we let great clubhouse guys like Reggie and Grudz go and brought in a complete waste of a roster spot in Encarnacion and Ponson. I do like Miles, but he's just not a starter, a good utility guy though. And I know the numbers don't suggest it and he's a very good player, but Rolen has been terrible this year. It's no wonder the Phillies stunk while he was there, you can't depend on him at all and it just seems like he's not the greatest clubhouse guy, very sullen and to himself. The Cards without Pujols would be lucky to finish ahead of the Cubs. Thank you for listening to my rant.

Wow, that was indeed a rant. A few thoughts in reply:
> Agreed on Marquis. At the very least, the guy needs a change of scenery. 0% chance he'll pitch in STL next season. Good riddance. > The Cards have been simply brutal to watch. It's not just losing, it's how they're doing it. Ugh > Personally, I don't hate the Astros. I think they're a fun team to have as a divisional rival. What I hate is how we've wilted against them two years running. > Agreed on the clubhouse guys. I think a lot of that is LaRussa thinking he can plug anyone in to his type of team. > I like Miles as a utility guy in the Polanco mold. > Rolen has had a rough season, agreed, but I think you're overly harsh on him. "No wonder the Phillies stunk while he was there" = WOW. He is highly respected in the clubhouse because he's a consumate pro. But I don't think he's been healthy since his injury this year, and when he's not healthy it really shows. His defense has been very sub-standard for him.

I can't wait to catch a game next year. Is it too early to talk about that?

1. Molina sucks.
2. LaRussa has managed his WORST season ever, period. 3. Pitching anyone? 4. I agree, without Pujols, we are the Cubs... but you could probably say that about Big Papi, Beltran, Berkman, etc.. The capper for me is, hey there is a lefty on the mound, lets put Taguchi in and sit Duncan. Ok then. I also think Edmonds will be gone and really.. that's not a bad thing. |

I always thought pitching to Berkman in general was a bad idea.

Cards win! Cards win! Cards win!
But only because the... Astros lose! Astros lose! Astros lose! *sigh* I know anything can happen in a short series, but this Cardinals team inspires absolutely zero confidence. I'll be cheering them on, but I'm not very hopeful. |

In this case, I think you have to live by the old Rolling Stones adage, "you can't always get what you want, but you get what you need".

True. I didn't mean for my previous post to come off too whinily - I'm certainly happy that the Cards won the division. But boy, they just aren't a very good team right now. |

I understand what you are saying, these past 2 weeks have been brutal, but, still got to hold on to hope that they can pull it together and win 11 games.
I certainly hope that Ownership shows some appreciation for a sold out home season and all of those 8.50 beers they have sold and do something with 2nd base, the bullpen and get a start besides Carpenter that you can count on.

Wow, just.... wow. Smoltz was on the radio Friday and was saying he told Bobby Cox he wanted to pitch if it meant someting. Well, it did and thanks goes out to Smoltzie.

However...the trick is making it to the dance, which - however ugly it was - they did accomplish. So now it's time to get down to it. Nobody in the NL is really overpowering, so anything can happen. 'Course if we make it to the Series again we'll probably get swept...again.

Fan diddly tastic.
I'd love to have more question marks heading into next season than we did into this one.

Oh, baby. That one was sweet. Helluva catch by Chavez seemed to torpedo us, but Yadi Yadi Yadi goes deep and then Wainright strikes out Beltran with the killer curve. Of all the players in MLB, the LAST guy I wanted to face with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th was Beltran, but we survived!
Here we come, Tigertown.
