Bama is hiring Shula
Can anyone look at Shula's resume and Croom's resume and say that they picked the best man for the job between these two?

No, they can't.
As much as I like to get on the NFL about its hiring practices, I have to admit that they've come light years in the past decade or so. But the college game is deplorable. Did anyone really think that Croom even had a shot at the 'Bama job? |

Dola: Of course this is better for the rest of the SEC, because Bama could have had a major plus (the only AA head coach, and a good coach at that), but instead they hired predigree with no skill.

I could give a rat's butt about Bama but I was really hoping it would go the other way. I'm the type that prefers leaving race out of such things but I hope that was not a deciding factor. I really hope they honestly think Shula is the man for the job. He's a big name so maybe the thinking is trying to publicly save face by hiring him. Of course, hiring an AA coach in the deep south would have been a nice move a well.
Ironically, my two favorite teams are the Bengals and Notre Dame, both with African American coaches who I think are going to have excellent careers where they are. They are just darned good coaches and examples of what can happen when given the chance. Don't laugh, Marvin Lewis is making a lot of un-Bengal like moves and seems to have wrestled day-to-day control from Mike Brown. I don't have to tell you what impact Willingham has had on a once proud program that had gone to crap. He's not only my favorite coach, he's one of my favorite public figures, period. |
