Service Engine Soon

How do you turn off the Service Engine Soon light on vehicles? I know that people do it, but I can't figure out how and it doesn't say anything in my owner’s manual.

The stupid DEQ won't pass my car through emissions with the light on even though it passed all the tests. They told me to take it to the dealership, but I don't want to be charged for something I can do myself.

BTW, I drive a 2003 Suzuki Aerio.

I don't know. I was thinking about that earlier, but I don't want to pull the fuse on the whole dash. I have an electronic speedometer and gas gauge.

Disconnect your battery and try to start the car. this should reset the computer.

How old is your car?
Usually you can get computer testers on the internet (about $100) and some of them allow you to reset it.

The nice thing about having the tester is that you can tell if it's something you need to worry about or not. In my experience, it's usually an oxygen sensor.

I'd try to remove the negative size of the battery for about 30 seconds to see if that clears it. If not, if you have an Autozone store close by, they will reset it for you.

If you contact the dealership service department they can probably tell you how to get around this. I see this light go on in my car at various pre-set mileage markers and it does not indicate any issue with the vehicle. Which, when I first learned about this, had me pretty annoyed.

I know this for Hondas. It comes on when the oil is recommended for change.

Hold in the mileage reset button before you start the car. Start the car up and hold the button for 10-12 seconds. After you release, it goes away.

You could try it on the Suzuki.

Look under the hood, there should be some sort of fuse box in the engine compartment. Just find the fuse labeled "engine" or "ecm". Pull it out, wait about a minute or two, then put it back in.

Remember, if the fault causing the light to come on is a hard fault (presently occuring), the light will come back on after the 2nd ignition key cycle. So once you get the light off and start the car, don't shut it off until you get through tech. Hope this helps.

BTW, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to find out what is causing the light to come on. It could be as simple as a loose fuel filler cap. Or, it could be something that, if ignored long enough, could cause some base engine problems down the line.

Take it to autozone, tell them to hook it up to their error code detector computer thingy to figure out what your error is. They will reset the computer, the light should stay off for a bit, at least. I think mine stayed off for about 2 days.
