Car Question: Mufflers
Ok, I bought a 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R (my first purchased car )... now, my dad won't leave me alone about this one issue... he says that with all the cars he had, he'd drill a small hole in the muffler to prevent moisture from building up and causing rust.
To me, that seems idiotic. Don't people wanna get rid of holes in their muffler? However, he said he heard this from a mechanic along time ago and trusts it... and won't leave me alone about it. Even though it's my car. Can anyone here see this from my dad's perspective? Is there proof somewhere of one of us being right? Thanks. |

Well, your Dad isn't crazy. Some people do do that to help alleviate moisture build up. Although, I believe if you are making alot of short runs it would be more beneficial. If you drive your car for longer runs, the exhaust should get hot enough to burn off moisture I believe.
Make sure you use a small drill bit if you are going to do this...

Wouldn't this be illegal in states or cities that require an emmisions test?

It would fail an emissions inspection in PA, not sure about other states. |

Yes, I'm sure that the banana in the tailpipe would cause it to fail an emissions test.

A question also: Some time ago you recommended drilling a 1/8-in weep hole in the end cap of the muffler to allow condensation to drain out. I requested this of my dealer, but they declined, stating that the drilled hole would rust. Do you have a comeback to that point?
A - I'm happy to hear that I cleared up the condensation conundrum for you. In answer to your hole question, your dealer is right - up to a point. Most mufflers have an anti-rust coating and the drilled hole may develop a bit of rust around the edges. You don't need a weep hole if most of your trips are long enough to thoroughly warm the car and cook off the moisture in the exhaust system. But, if most of your driving is short trips, water sitting in the muffler will cause it to rust through much faster than a weep hole.

I heard a long time ago that if you put a shotgun shell in the muffler, it would explode after a bit of driving, blowing the crap out of the muffler and possibly some tires.

But it would also achieve the goal of eviscerating the built up moisture, no? I just think that, since this is a relatively well-known theory, that if it was actually more beneficial for the muffler to have a 1/8th inch hole in it to drain moisure, one of the team of engineers that spend their lives designing mufflers for manufacturers or aftermarketers would have designed, patented, and marketed it. |
