Usually 8 hours a night and at least 40 hours a week. 9 years served with probably 20 to 25 years left to go.

I've never been in an American prison. I have twice been detained in foreign countries, and never plan on leaving the US again.

I spent a couple of hours in a jail with a 23-year-old woman about three weeks ago. I've never actually been "in jail" before, though.

You missed it above.

Never been to prison or jail. Not even detox (although close on several occasions). Although I've heard jail is pretty fun for somebody with nothing better to do.

A good friend of mine is a corrections officer at the prison Jeffrey Dahmer was at and currently works in the housing unit that Chai Vang fella who shot and killed those 6 hunters in northern Wisconsin. He says it's pretty boring in there.

Heh. Friend of mine was a former CO at a maximum security joint in Tennessee. Amusingly, about 30 years ago that place was ruled just BEING there was cruel and unusual punishment.

For the prisoners or the guards?

Columbia (where my friend works) is going tobacco free here in a few months and my friend speculates that it is going to be much harder on the officers than the inmates.

That is kind of like Wisconsin. We have a super max prison, but it can no longer be called that because of some moronic judge. Working in a prison is usually very boring, but there are moments that get you heart racing. I was escorting an inmate to the hospitol, when we got back to the institution the inmate ran on me. Good thing I was in better shape and could run faster than him. When I went to unlock the door and turned around and he wasnt there, my heart stopped, then I saw him about 30 yards away running. Sad thing was he had less than 6 months to go, now he has an extra 4 years.

Actually...no, I bet it's still gonna be worse for the inmates. You know damn well the inmates are gonna smoke, while the officers can't. First inmate to get lippy with a pissed off guard who wants a cigarette is gonna be in pain.

Now, if this were a movie, in the five minutes or so he was running from you he would have avenged the situation which unfairly put him in prison, had sex with the beautiful woman patiently waiting for his release and reconciled with his long-estranged teenage daughter, saving her from making a Very Bad Decision (tm).

In reality, he probably pulled a hamstring, and his daughter has changed her name to Shalomar and moved to Nevada.
