This is really tough to say, I have been looking for one myself. If they would only just have one fuckin' audio and video encoding format, it would make our lives so much easier.

I use the K-Lite Mega Codec pack. It has just about every single codec you might ever run across:

It's not a single codec, per se, but a really comprehensive selection of them.

use VLC media player. It doesn't require any codecs to be installed. Can play any file.
