Martin Brodeur

Is there any doubt that other than Roy, Brodeur is the best goalie in hockey. Not only will Brodeur break everyone of Roy's records, but he has won 2 cups, rookie of the year and had increadible career stats.

365 wins, 2.19 gaa, 64 shutouts,

Now I know people say it's the system he plays in and he doesn't face alot of shots, but anyone who has ever played hockey knows it can be more challenging for a goalie to face less shots then alot of shots in a game. It really pisses me off when people try to sell Brodeur short, he is one of the best to ever play the game, period.

as an Avs fan, I think there's no doubt that Roy is the best goalie.
as a hockey fan, I think there's no doubt that Brodeur is the 2nd best.

(Cujo, btw, is third).

I for one, was so very happy when Brodeur finally got the nod to be Canada's goalie and brought home the gold. I for one am not a Roy fan (yes he has skills, but it's just one of those things), and well, Cujo can rot after he ran out of Edmonton for bigger money seconds after saying that wasn't what he was in hockey for.

For my money, he's the only guy right now I'd rather have in goal for the Oiler's than Salo.

Though Fuhr would still kick his ass in a showdown

So you think Salo is the 2nd best goalie in the NHL?

Best goalies of all-time? (in no particular order)

I think these are no-brainers:
Roy
Brodeur
Hasek
Plante
Dryden
Sawchuk
Esposito

But these?
Bauer
Glen Hall
Fuhr
Belfour
Billy Smith
(ack - the Philly goalie during the cup wins in mid-70s)

Who of the current young goalies will be in these discussions in the future?
Turco
Denis
Gigeure
Lehtinen
Miller
Noronen

For my money I'd take Brodeur over Roy. Much better attitude in my opinion.

As for 3rd, what has Cujo ever won to make him the 3rd best goalie in the leauge?

certainly not this year, but it seems like so many times in the past, in the playoffs, I've seen him carry teams that weren't so great much farther than the deserved to be there.

and the one goalie I think who has a chance to get into an upper echelon is Turco - really like this guy.

Erm...Lehtinen is an excellent defensive forward for YOUR DALLAS STARS , but he's never played goalie that I know of.

Also, where are Depietro and Luongo? Maybe Theodore? Sure he slumped this year, but he was the rock of friggin' ages last year.

I think he is thinking about the goalie drafted high last year from Finland. I think it is Kari Latinon (sp).

Also, Luongo could be a star. I have seen him steal many a game by himself.

Starting next season, when he's eligible to play in the minors, I think we will be seeing the first glimpses of Dan Blackburn as a great goalie.

He's got all the talent, but lacks some of the fundamental skills. Playing in the minors (where he should have been this season) should allow him to accumulate them.

The following season, I believe he'll come back up to the NHL and star.

I think Salo is sorely under rated, and if he played on a team like Dallas or Jersey, his numbers would be comparable. I hesitate to say what 'rank' I'd give him, but here's why I wouldn't give him up. Last year he was a big part in our team having the second lowest goals against in the league, and this year we nearly abandoned any semblance of defense to try and score more, inflating his numbers.

Another big reason was when he was about to enter free agency, and instead of testing the waters, signed a 2 or 3 year deal to stay in Edmonton for millions less than it was expected he'd get on the market (this was before the Olympics). It was great to finally have an athlete show that they were willing to stay here for less because of what the city offers, and live up to their word when they say they'd like to stay and try to win here, instead of bolting for the door once free agency calls (yes, you Cujo).

Yes, this year was a streaky one for him, but I'm more than happy to have Salo as our goalie until he decides to retire.

Sure taking less money makes him a swell guy, but he doesn't even crack the top 20 goalies, IMO.

I would be tempted to say Luongo is one of the top 5 goalies right now...and i would take him ahead of Salo in a heart5 beat.

DiPetro for the Isles might be great in the future as well.

Though Brodeur is absolutely wonderful. He has made some jaw dropping saves in his career.

Not top 20? That's an interesting thought, and you're entitled to it, I'd personally say top 10, but a'course I'm biased. Yes, this wasn't his best year by far, but had we been having this conversation a year ago when the Oiler's had the second best GAA in the entire NHL, I'm sure people wouldn't be quite as down on him.

As far as Luongo, he's good, and he's going to get even better, but for the loyalty that Salo has shown, he deserves every bit of respect he gets, and I'm quite willing to wager that he'll be back on top of his game next season.

MikeVic...where is Hrudey? I loved that fashionable headband he used to wear!

My personal favorite...Darcy Wakalauk. Ahhh, the good old days.

ahahahaha. Darcy Wakaluk.... Stars, wasn't he?

I see Hrudey on the hockey shows here, so he was someone I didn't have to think of a lot to remember... so I didn't include him.

With Tim Cheveldae... I played some old "Open Ice" arcade game a couple of weeks ago, and I picked Winnipeg. When I saw him as the goalie, I couldn't stop laughing. I forgot all about Cheveldae

I always liked Bob Essensa. Not in the category of goalies we're talking about, but the perfect back-up and team guy.

And yes, I was talking about Kari (sp?), Atlanta's future. The hype has been huge but he was unimpressive against Canada at the WJC.

At this point in time, Brodeur is the best in the world IMO. It will be interesting to compare his numbers to Roy when they both finally stop playing. (How many years does Roy have left?)
