Cannes!

I normally dont care that much about Cannes, but i just saw one of my oldest friends whom i havent talked to much over the last few years... just WON "best first time director" at Cannes. Im shocked! Up until now shes only done a handful of music videos, i knew she was getting more into serious film making, but this is amazing.

So everyone, go see "Me and You and Everyone We Know" by Miranda July; when or if it every comes to a theatre near you. that is all, thank you

Besides that, a Jim Jarmusch film "Broken Flowers" won second place, anything Jarmusch is always good, great to see him get some major recognition.

I've read great things about this film, can't wait to see it.

Is she the same Miranda July who released a couple of albums on Kill Rock Stars in the late 90s?

Yes, thats her. I think the last album she worked on was with my ex girlfriends band ICU, Girls on Dates or something like that. Nice to hear KRS mentioned on here

Well, i can't say I actually enjoy her stuff (or tolerated it even... in fact i hated it). But maybe I'll like here movie(s).

It looks like the guy who plays Sol Starr on Deadwood is the a lead character, so that will probably get me to watch it.

Kill Rock Stars has produced some of my very favorite artists (Elliott Smith, Sleater-Kinney, and more recently The Decemberists).

I agree about Mirandas' "music", i cannot stand avant-garde noise in any way.

Thats awesome! Youre diggin deep into my backyard with a lineup like that. Elliot was one of my closest friends for a good chunk of my life, Carrie Browstein went to elementary school with my GF and are very close friends still, Ive known Janet Weiss for ages, she was married to my good friend Sam Coomes (Quasi and Heatmiser), and to top it off - i know a few members of the Decemberists pretty well, i talk to Rachel and Colin almost every day at my coffee shop. Chad Crouch the guy who puts out there albums is another dude in my social routine. lol, can you tell im from portland?

Very cool. Also a big fan of Heatmiser's stuff, as well a s a pretty big fan of Quasi, although I haven't enjoyed the recent stuff as much. They put on a great show though when they opened for Elliott Smith and then played as his backing band (on the XO tour). Janet Weiss is easily my favorite drummer going, she steals the show every time.

And here I thought this was going to be a discussion about Sophie Marceau's "wardrobe malfunction"...

Elliott Smith is by far my favorite musician/artist/whatever ever. It's interesting to learn that a friend of his posts on here.

I just saw this tonight, and holy crap is it awesome. If theres any justice in the movie industry it will get more than it's fair share of accolades come Oscar time. Honestly the best movie i've seen in quite a few years.

This was a terrific movie. I saw it a while ago at the Atlanta Film Festival. Miranda is a really unique performer and it's amazing how well she handles the camera.

No need to start a new thread, but besides YMAEWK, I also saw Goodnight And Goodluck and Havoc.

G&G was really a letdown, I never felt like I was watching a movie, more like a narration. Everything was so by the numbers, point A to point B that I never really felt like I knew any of the characters. Sure it's an interesting story, but I think it's been told better in other films.

The other movie i saw the was the much talked about (by mostly 16 year old boys) Havoc. This is the movie that received alot of buzz when it was revealed that teen star Ann Hathaway was naked and having sex thru alot of the film. Turns out it's a pretty good film. It's about a girl who's friends are, for lack of a better term, wiggers, high society hoodies. She ends up in East LA one night and gets drawn into the much harder life of Latin street gangs. It cusps on preachy alot, but never really goes over the line. And truth be told she is quite good in it.

She does show her tits a great deal, but it never feels forced, it's a quality film IMO and it's a shame it basicly got shelved.
