The NFC East is perhaps the best division in the NFL. Each team in the division has a realistic reason to believe they can make the playoffs and all of them could also make cases for winning the division.
But who is going to eventually win the division? That is the question which our own Richard Chavez tries to answer after the jump!
1. New York Giants
The G-Men looked primed for another Super Bowl before Plaxico Burress shot the team in the foot -- and himself in the leg. The Giants are now without the distractions he brought, but also his immense talents. His replacements may not be ready to cover for him but they have the NFL’s richest QB throwing to them, Eli Manning. Their defense is even better with Chris Canty, Rocky Bernard and the returning Osi Umenyiora. The Giants looked flat the last time we saw them but this is a team only 20 months removed from a Super Bowl victory.
2. Philadelphia Eagles
After a mediocre start, Philadelphia managed to make some noise in the playoffs, beating Minnesota and the Giants before falling to Arizona in the NFC Championship game. The lineup remains largely the same. Donovan McNabb is still without a true #1 wide receiver and Brian Westbrook is a year older but still effective when he’s on the field. I'm sure McNabb loves Michael Vick now but I doubt he feels the same way when he starts taking snaps away from him. The addition of Vick though makes them much more interesting but not enough for the Eagles to take number one.
3. Washington Redskins
No respect for Jason Campbell? After talks of Jay Cutler fell through, the Redskins QB from Auburn felt slighted by his lack of job security. We can only expect for he and the team to improve based on another year of experience with 2nd year coach Jim Zorn. Albert Haynesworth certainly shores up a defense that was solid last year. Barring another second half collapse, Washington may be able to jump into a Wild Card spot.
4. Dallas Cowboys
Tony Romo managed to shed two reality TV stars this offseason, one moved to Buffalo and the other to Nick Lachey. It’s put or shut up time for Romo and the rest of the Cowboys. With the departure of Terrell Owens, who believe it or not is an excellent receiver, offensive production may not come as easy. Roy Williams needs to prove his worth and Marion Barber must stay healthy for the Cowboys to compete in the tough NFC East. Their defense and special teams are strong as usual but they’ll need more than that to fill out their brand new 100,000 seat stadium.
