We are now less than one month away from the release of Electronic Arts’ NCAA Football 10. If you are one of the many fans of the series, you probably already know about the enhancements and additions to this year’s game. That being said, the TeamBuilder option looks nothing short of awesome and will surely suck away many hours of my life. There are times, though, when playing with real, established teams is called for. After all, if somebody is talking smack about your alma mater, you have to be able to let your play on the field do the talking. With that in mind, I thought I would take a look at 10 teams gamers should watch out for in NCAA Football 10.
1. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Every team that played against the Yellow Jackets last year knew that Georgia Tech was going to run the ball. But teams did not know who was going to get the ball. In other words, the triple option offense should be a blast to employ. Georgia Tech will have an expansive playbook that is designed to deceive the opposition. It also helps that the GT running backs are ridiculously good. This is definitely the team to watch out for if you are like me and feel that running the option is the best part of EA’s NCAA Football series. And while GT's defense is not great, the team is still going to outscore almost every opponent.
2. Ohio State Buckeyes
The great thing about playing NCAA Football 10 on your console is that The Buckeyes do not have to lose every big game that they play in. Ohio State has never been a particularly exciting team to play with, or watch for that matter. That changes this year with Terrelle Pryor behind center. When you think of a game changer, you think of this guy. Pryor is poised to be the new poster boy of college football -- his physical gifts are beyond amazing. Pryor electrified Ohio State with his play last year and will be lighting up your console with his dazzling running and passing this year. Ohio State’s defense is never an issue and will be rock solid.
3. Oregon State Beavers
One could make an argument that the Beavers are the most exciting college football team. I mean the Rodgers brothers alone make this team worth watching. You might remember Jacquizz Rodgers single-handedly dismantling USC last year. This guy is a little water bug who never stops moving, and he is going to be an absolute weapon in NCAA Football 10. His brother, James, is more of a receiver type, but he is just as dangerous with the ball in his hands. This is a team that both scores and allows points in a hurry. What could be more exciting?
4. Texas Longhorns
No surprise here. Colt McCoy could have hoisted the Heisman Trophy last year -- all he did was complete 76.7 percent (no, that is not a misprint) of his passes and beat Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl. He has some mobility but is more of a drop-back passer, which should be perfect for those gamers who like to sit in the pocket and pick their opposition apart. The defense was stout last year but lost several key members to graduation and the NFL.
5. Oklahoma State Cowboys
If there was a more exciting team than the Cowboys during the 2008 college football season, then please point that team out now. The Cowboys surpassed 50 points in more than half of their games last season. This team should be an absolute blast to play with. The Cowboys have a ferocious offense led by a scary dual-purpose weapon, quarterback Zac Robinson. The defense is only so-so but who cares? That just means you get the ball back faster.
6. Florida State Seminoles
The positive news for 'Noles fans is that they do not have to sit out all of their suspended players in a videogame. Moreover, there is no mischief for the players to get into after gamers shut down their consoles. But all jokes aside, this is a talented bunch that had a nice bounce-back season last year. This is also a well-balanced team, rather than one that is going to blow you away with incredible talent.
7. Utah Utes
Yes, the Utes lost some key members from last year’s 13-0 mid-major super squad, but this team is not going anywhere. The Utes are going to feature a powerful running game and a stifling defense. It is always fun to blast the competition in the Mountain West Conference before testing your team against a few non-conference powerhouses. If you were to finish 13-0 in NCAA Football 10 with the Utes, would the artificial intelligence (AI) crown you as the best team in college football?
8. West Virginia Mountaineers
My favorite EA NCAA Football player of all time may have moved on to the pros (I will see you in Madden 10, Pat White) but my second favorite remains. Noel Devine is the diminutive, lightning-fast runner/receiver for the Mountaineers. He alone puts West Virginia on my radar. If you boot up my copy of NCAA Football 09, almost all of my saved highlights show the back of Devine's jersey as he picks through the line and then steadily pulls away from a horde of unfortunate defenders. Yes, EA has apparently slowed down the players for this year’s version of the game, but in this instance, it is not going to matter. Oh yeah, the rest of the team is also pretty good.
9. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
24-23. If you are a Notre Dame fan, you know what that score represents. Yes, that one point loss was at the hands of a hideous Syracuse team that would finish the 2008 season 3-9. If I were a Notre Dame fan, I would buy NCAA Football 10 just to trounce Syracuse over and over again -- seriously, I would probably only play with those two teams. Regardless, the Fighting Irish look stacked this year. Notre Dame has an extremely talented quarterback and plenty of receivers for him to throw to. The Irish also have a very solid defense. For the first time in three years, Notre Dame actually look like a fun team to play with.
10. Florida Gators
All right, Florida should probably be higher on this list. It's just that the Gators always seem to be so easy to win with in EA’s NCAA Football series. But hey, I guess that sounds kind of like real-life college football. Florida has the best quarterback and has built its program under the directive of recruiting speed and more speed. There are playmakers all over the field. But perhaps the best part about the Gators is their playbook, which allows users to feel as if they are constantly confounding the competition.
Honorable Mentions
Alabama Crimson Tide: Tons of talent. Began last year 12-0 before losing their final two games.
Virginia Tech Hokies: They were young last year. They are scary now.
USC Trojans: Always worth playing with, but it is even more enjoyable when you beat them.
Ole Miss Rebels: A team on the rise. They are poised to jump into championship contention.
