What You Need to Know About Video Game Hockey This Season

If you are anything like me, you spend the summer months outside enjoying the weather, yet you can't help but think about the fall sports that lay ahead. So a day after the NHL 09 demo has been released on the Xbox Live Marketplace, we take a look forward to see what's in store for the two hockey games being released next week.

This past summer was home to one of the busiest and most interesting offseasons in NHL history. The frenetic free agency period followed a tremendous year of hockey that ended with an amazing Cup Finals in June. Now, when NHL 2K9 and NHL 09 hit stores next week, gamers will be in hockey heaven once more as the virtual frozen pond will be ready once again for blades of steel.

Let’s start with the game that won various sports game of the year awards, NHL 09. After spending some quality time with the PS3 and 360 demos this past week, I can already tell this game is going to pick up right where it left off.

Deeper controls lead the way: being able to lift sticks and flip dump pucks are two major additions to the control scheme. These added skills should simultaneously open and close the offensive gameplay. EA is counting on these new skills to give players a new edge in defending cheese online and a staple of real life hockey at the same time.

Fresh off of a critically acclaimed game, EA Sports hopes NHL 09 follows in 08's footsteps.

If you played last year's game online you most likely came across a person who slap passed the puck across the crease for easy cheese goals. The ability to lift the opposing player's stick should combat this cheesy maneuver. The addition of the flip dump means you have a new way of clearing out the heat in your zone, perhaps leading to a much needed line change -- it's also a great way to attack the defense when trying to enter an opponent's zone.

And speaking of online play, NHL 09 brings a new aspect to the table that may even intrigue the "casual" gamer. As you may have heard by now, the new Be a Pro mode allows you to create your player and take him online to play in games with up to 12 total people at once. This should be a rather revolutionary feature, and if implemented correctly this disc will be occupying console drive slots everywhere for a long time come this winter and spring.

Imagine taking that superstar forward you have and plopping him on an online team with a few of your buddies' created players. Learn to work together and try to become the best in the world? I'm in! You are allowed to choose what position to play and you have several styles to choose from when it comes to each position on the ice. So will I be a sniper, a grinder or a playmaker? Perhaps I'll just be a sniper that cherry picks at the opposing blue line waiting for that flip pass or home run outlet to spring me free. Regardless of how you choose to play, I could see this becoming the most exciting thing in any online sports game in, well ever.

If you are a fan of Take-Two’s rendition of hockey then you also have several things to be excited about. The newest edition will feature "top-notch" in-game presentation, something that 2K is known for accomplishing in the football realm. Look for playoff beards on your players that actually change as you get deeper into the postseason, great arena entrances, and a Stanley Cup presentation that you probably won't want skip over if you are lucky enough to survive four rounds of the postseason -- or at least that's the promise.

2K Sports hopes to be competitive this year with EA's hockey title.

2K9’s online leagues should also be mentioned when discussing the most in-depth console sports game online features. Obviously, we won't know how great the leagues are until we are able to dive into them ourselves, but from the details posted online the leagues look intense! Essentially, the front end is a well thought out and clean homepage that features all the stats and standings you can handle. You can also write blogs or upload in-game replays that explain and show off how you embarrassed your latest opponent. A full season's worth of smack talking online against your friends could be the ultimate time killer if the gameplay can keep up with the effort put into the other aspects of the game.

Still, no matter what game you like more, you all should be excited about next week since both games will be hitting store shelves. EA has a game that can appeal to both the die-hard simulation fan and "casual" gamer at the same time: The game can simulate real NHL flow with the right users in control and settings in effect, or can cater to the run and gun style of an arcade game. And the "hardcore" will notice that 2K does things that may get overlooked by some -- face-offs, presentation, and board work -- things that just scream real-life hockey. Regardless, each foundation has been set, and now there's no more tearing down and rebuilding when it comes to these two franchises.

The NHL season will be here in about a month, and all those same faces in new places will be ready to lace ‘em up once more. By then we will be a few weeks into our NHL video games, ready for yet another great year of hockey. What more could a puck head ask for?

I'm glad to see VC getting NHL 2K back on the right track. I bought 2K8 last year and it just felt like 2K7 repackaged when I put it up against the huge jump NHL 08 made. I still think NHL 09 will be the best experience, but I could see from the demo that 2K is closing the gap again.

Can't wait until next week. Hopefully we get two great games!

Nice to see the efforts put out when there is strong competition in a sport. With two great games, everyone wins.

A great example of how competition breeds better quality games. If this oppurtunity was still allowed to football games, just think where they would be now.

I cant help but to agree. EA makes an absolutely fantastic hockey game now.

True EAs hockey games sucked 2002-2006 (2004 was pretty good), and only 2ks success with NHL2k (2k3-2k6) made EA improve.

About the NFL games; donīt bother anymore, Madden is stale nowadays.

So a good question to pose is this; If EA were to acquire Take 2 and then their only be one hockey game do you think the game would immediately suffer or get better as a result of them perhaps combining the efforts? I am not asking for a which game is better debate as what you think would happen right away. I assume that down the line the ideas and innovation would get stale and come to a slow down, is that also the general thinking of the community?

For the record I agree that competition drives better games for us. I wonder if a another developer would come in and try to make a hockey game if EA buys 2k.

2k9 isn't closing the gap, they're giving it away. 2k8 was far, far better than 2008. However, it seems like the roles are switching and 2k9 is giving way to 2009 now. I hope 2k gets back on track. Just when Kush gets it right with 2k8, they fire them... They need some consistency already.
2k8 was crap. Easy on the coolaid buddy. It was a complete checkfest and a big step back from the gameplay of 2K7, which I really liked.

NHL 08 was a revelation as most people in the know stated throughout the year. I didnt like 07 because other than the new stick gameplay, the AI was like chickens running around with their heads cut off. But EA got it right for 08 and 09 looks like more of the same.

I tried both of the the new 2k9 demos on the PS3 and 360. 360 was better but gameplay and camera view were lacking on both. They need more zoom at the far end to see what's going on. Game felt very early in development to me, but the presentation aspects were great. Too bad they didnt spend more time on the gameplay.

For online, there is no other option than 2K sports. The leagues destroy, rip up, and humiliate EA's "effort."

How it that??? EASHL??? Does that ring a bell? EA has upped their game the last three years and they are the best hockey game to buy. Truthfully there are no arguments. Skill Stick = best thing to ever happen to any sport video game franchise.

2k7 was freaking horrible. 2k8 was the only good hockey game Kush made.
You are about the only one who thinks that. 2K screwed up the controls last year in 2k8, as most reviews will remind you. There was a serious lack of rhythm and flow to 2k8 with all the checking going on. It just didnt work, unless you were too stubborn to admit you paid $60 for a substandard game and forced yourself to like it. I tried but once I got into NHL 08, it was a no-brainer.

Ignorance is not bliss. There is a reason 2k got a new studio to do hockey and baseball this year. They both were weak efforts compared to the competition. Make the mental adjustment and move forward,

2K8 wasn't that bad with the checking with the right sliders. I could get less checks actually on 10 minute periods on 2K8 than 08. The problem was in the way it was done. First of all there were 2-3 guys charging a guy and they always lowered their shoulders, like they were trying to make a tackle. So it was just a matter of move to the side, make the pass to a wide open player and shoot.

Even though EA's magnetic hip checks were out of control as well, at least the cpu maintained some sort of positioning on D.

Sharper? I guess maybe the Ice looks more glassy...but the player model look like azz...

As I've prayed for in the past if only we got EA's looks with 2K's gameplay we would have the uber hockey game......but now with 2k going in the wrong direction last season and EA making strides last season and by the looks of the demo this season...its a great year to be a hockey fan.

To me BAP is a bonus...i may or may not enjoy that one online....im really on the fence on that one....

2k still has the best league support and EA would be smart to copy 2k's lead to a "T"!

Looking forward to this one......and its been a LONG time since I've salavated for an NHL game since the days of genesis hocky.
