Madden NFL 08 vs. NFL 2K5 Part Three

How Does ESPN NFL 2K5 Compare To The “Other” Football Video Game?

In the two weeks of this series so far (part I, part II), ESPN has jumped out to an early 2–0 lead. Can Madden make a comeback in the following weeks or will ESPN go for the sweep?

This week's comparison brings us to the debate on graphics. Coming off last week's in-depth comparison of the controls and gameplay makes this week's comparison feel simplistic. Now, comparing a game that came out almost four years ago to a game that came out just last year is not a hard comparison to make because technology has advanced. So Madden is the clear cut winner in this category, right?

Player Models

Both games do a relatively decent job in capturing the player models that they attempt to model. However, ESPN's models are on the skinny side, while Madden goes towards more of a "steroidy" type player. Neither of these styles really detract from the experience.

Players are always wearing helmets in football so it's really hard to tell how the faces look when compared to their real-life counterparts. When you do catch glimpses in the games though, ESPN's faces tend to look pretty solid, especially when you consider that they've been seemingly plastered on (technology constraints). In Madden though it seems the faces have been fully regenerated.

When the game is in motion the models on the field run very smooth in both games, but slightly smoother in Madden as there is not a hitch in the frame rate. When bigger piles start to form in ESPN, a little bit of slowdown occurs which could cause some gripes.

However, in ESPN they have beautiful sidelines with the real player models depicted, as opposed to just fake robots in Madden.

Each game has its problems and strengths in this area, but they both do what they are supposed to do: look like an 11-on-11 football game.

This was really close, so I have to say this round ends in a tie. But for a game like ESPN to even really compete in this category is saying something.

Stadium and Field

At the time ESPN had beautiful stadium views and the grass was spectacular. But now on these new systems, the game just doesn't compare favorably. In Madden, the field and stadiums look perfect in HD and are replicated very well. The field gets worn down in real-time and the lighting on the stadiums works wonders.

It's hard to really even compare these two games in this category, especially with the gap of time between them. This one goes to Madden.

Overall Look

To say ESPN NFL 2K5 was a beautiful game is an understatement. Breathtaking would be a better word to describe it. But this isn't 2004 anymore. Madden '08 (while taking a small step back to achieve 60 FPS) pushes the envelope even further to achieve perfect football emulation. From the models to the field, Madden is better overall (and should be) graphically than ESPN and there's no doubt about it. Yes, people can nitpick certain things that Madden does, or that ESPN does better but one would be living in a cloud of denial if they believe ESPN is graphically superior.

Join us next week for the Presentation and Sound comparison, and to see if Madden can even up the score at 2–2!

Well there is no way Madden has a chance of winning the presentation round. So it looks like after 4 years, the LAST GEN game is still better. I will admit that 09 is looking much better, but yet it still lags way behind is some major areas of the game.

Since EA sports bought the 2K franchise, why doesnt EA take the engine that was produced from NFL 2K5, completely disregard the Madden engine and insert the 2K5 engine?

++If EA didnt purchase 2K then im sorry. im an idiot. Completely disregard me.

No crap,a next-gen game from last year beats a 4-year old last gen game in graphics.Next weeks presentation comparison should be a good laugh though.

You can compare Madden '09 and only come up with a win for graphics for that game as well.I don't even know if it should win even that if it doesn't finally take care of the constant morphing issues.

Well, in Will's defense, it's hard to compare graphics from two different generations without giving the newer one a full fledged advantage. The problem is, you also can't disregard one category in a straight up battle and judge it by different criteria than straight up. So of course Madden is the better looking game, but that's what happens.

i was late to the 360 crowd. i bought mine in feb. i recently bought madden 07 for the 360 recently for $7.96. even at that price i felt ripped off.

it did not compare to madden 06 for the ps2 (which i was still playing) and was completely blown away by 2k5. i have yet to play madden 08 360 because i cannot believe it will be better than either last gen game. 09 looks like they finally may have made a game worthy of the title next gen. but that has looked the case before.

SAD!!!!!!

i have 2k5 and all pro. i will likely stay with them. i can always play the ps2 versions of madden if i want. EA really has dropped the ball so far.

I think Will is doing a good job on this comparison and while the first two parts were a little less obvious, this one and the next are actually fairly clear-cut.It's somewhat embarassing for EA,which is what they deserve to this point.

I havenŽt had the same interest in Football since 2k was stopped from having the NFL license. EA bought ESPN and did nothing with it, EA bought the NFL license and are doing the same old same old at a slow pace. 2k knew football, and they kicked *** with the ESPN license. I wonŽt buy a NFL game this year , IŽll stick with soccer, nhl and NBA. NFL2k5 was so much better than MAdden2005

Put it this way... ESPN 2k5 could fool a lot of people that it is next gen if it was dated. Even if the graphics are on par with Madden 08, as the discussion has proven thus far, it still is a better overall game. I expect the count to be 3-1 because no Madden game to day can touch the presentation and sound (including custom tracks) that ESPN has.

Not necessarily unnecessarily...

Ian Cummings(from EA) stated that he still looks at ESPN 2K5 as a benchmark for a lot of areas in the game, particularly the tackling engine and presentation. These list are good so that EA knows that even though they've made some strides, they still have a ways to go (to catch up to 2004)!

Thanks for the articles. Keep them coming!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, NFL 2k4 and NFL 2k5 were groundbreaking titles and I still find it amazing to see that even with four more years and new hardware, EA is STILL playing catch up to those titles.

Really it does make me sad as a gamer, heavily invested in sports gaming, that competition in NFL properties was eliminated. Imagine NFL 2K9 for a minute with an unbroken line of development, similar to the NBA 2K series. That'd be a revolutionary gaming experience

Have fun......................

EA will never catch up with 2k, they knew it that's why they paid all that money for the right to the NFL. Some great guys have updated the NFL2K5 ROSTERS and we are playing the 2008 season right now including the 2008 schedule. Maddwen will never catch up with 2K

# 16 Unforgiven @ 06/26/08 12:37 PM
I think 2k5 has a better overall look honestly (on the field, im not counting stadiums and all) .. of course Madden looks better when you get technical like poly counts and jersey detail and all... BUT, 2k5 seems to have that perfect art direction that makes it look like a real game, its like its washed out, but not washed out to the point where its dead, but washed out to the point where it looks very real.

2k5 is the best football game within the 4 yr period. In my opinion it was the closest to being a next gen game in 2004. the presentation by far is still da best. Also any time u can destroy an opponent on a hard difficulty by doing the same play constantly is not a real football game . People talk about da hit stick like it is amazing. Its just a hit or miss.In 2k5 though once u try for a tackle u hav to tap da x button to either bring da run bk down or u will get brought down. why people luv madden so much even after des pitiful games dey made, da world will never kno

THe presentation round will be the most lopsided loss in the history of 2 game comparisons

2k5 can't wash maddens balls( the current gen).

2k5 was for beginners. You guys have been delerious for years. I figure none of you guys really took the time and learned how to play the madden games.

It takes alot of time to master all the madden features and memorize playbooks. Until you figure it ALL out, you don't appreciate how good the game actually is. When you get it down, its like butter. Im play online and dominate everyone. I hunt players with winning records.

I play with the Colts and cant live without making presnap reads and adjustments. 2k5 fails with presnap options.

It took me years to master what I do now. Too bad they wiped half that away with nextgen.
