A Look Ahead to NCAA Football 2010

Now that we know what features are coming with NCAA Football 09, what should we start looking for in 2010?

The hype in the forums for NCAA Football 09 is building exponentially with the game still over a month away. With new features such as online dynasties, wide-open gameplay, and deeper playbooks, some folks are already planning vacations to meet the July 15th release date. A main contributor to the hype has been the presence of NCAA developers answering questions in the forums. This involvement by the developers has been a pleasant surprise and the response by community members has been amazing. Since development of NCAA Football 09 is nearly wrapped up, let's take a look at what we want to see in NCAA Football 2010.

FCS Schools/Create-a-school Feature

Appalachian State's improbable win over Michigan last season makes this a feature that EA must add. If you weren't aware, FCS teams can now be voted into the Top 25 thanks to ASU and their three straight FCS National Championships. The fact is that FCS teams are a huge part of college football. Who in their right mind wants to play an entirely generic FCS Southwest squad? If college basketball games can include 300+ teams I see no reason EA can't add around 50 FCS teams at least.

At the very least give us the ability to create our own team, this feature is something the masses are hungry for and not carrying this over to next gen from current gen was a mistake. Adding this would allow FCS fans to create their own school as closely as possible and have something to work with. This would open up the options for us to keep the game fresh and to add another way to have fun.

Improving the battle in the trenches

Alright EA, it's about time you guys get away from the stiff arm lock and predictable outcomes of the line play. In fact here are all of the situations which can and do happen when the linemen interact:

1) Nothing. Both stand there locked together upright and don't move, at all.

2) Pancake. Upon contact one of the linemen gets sat on his rear. Pancakes are a part of the game but the way in which they happen in EA's football games are ridiculous. Add some animations where the lineman actually pushes the other person to the game after a few yards. For a great example of a pancake check out this vid (Watch the RT #70).

3) Defender spins/rips out of block. This is the only way to get out of a block which it saddens me to say. You either use use the swim move to get by or spin off him. What about a speed rush to the outside or a quick move to the inside? There are so many different things that could happen with the linemen interacting!

4) Defender warps to tackle ball carrier. It's happened to all of us. You're on offense and you call a run play only to see a huge hole in the line. Your eyes light up as you head for the hole and once you reach it some d-lineman magically ends up in a tackle animation and you view the replay thirty times to witness the terrible play.

Most NCAA fans hope we finally get a good engine to simulate the battle in the trenches.

Adding depth to the interaction in the trenches would get extreme praise from the OS community. This could even be marketed EA! The perfect guy would've been Glen Dorsey but a linebacker could work as well. I could envision James Laurinaitis as a pretty good cover boy for EA.

Presentation, presentation, presentation

EA has been extremely honest in the forums and have repeatedly said they have been in talks about improving the presentation. Well do it one time! Here are some ideas to improve a very mediocre attempt at presentation:

1) Team specific entrances. Some the come to mind immediately are: ND's touching of the "Play Like a Champion Today" sign and Clemson's touching of Howard Rock. How about a generic entrance where the players rush out of the tunnel and you let us set some music? How easy would that be!? Just give us something because fast forwarding to the coin toss is about as stale as it gets. Currently we get a great shot of the stadium, they look lovely. But where's the "wow" factor in that? Oh man look at this greatly designed stadium, it really pumps me up for the game. Here you can see what these generic entrances could be like.

2) Pregame information. Give us a little information on the game at hand. Show a couple impact players on each team with a stat overlay and we're all good.

3) Halftime highlights. Could we get some stats with a little discussion on the game and a "play of the half" segment? Have one of the commentators talk about the game a little to recap what happened.

4) In-game information. I would love to see the ESPN bottomline utilized as scores of other games in our Dynasty would scroll across the screen. Wasn't this in a NCAA game before? More stat overlays would also be a great welcome and I think a page can be taken out of 2K's basketball series. The stats could be added very subtly on the bottom of the screen.

5) Post game highlights. Improvement on the current post game system would be a nice addition. Bring back the cut scenes of coaches shaking hands and players celebrating and pouting. Put some weight on the game matchups and if a big upset happens have the crowd go nuts and have commentary on the importance of the upset for the underdog.

Honorable Mention
WR/DB Interaction
Field condition affecting play
Formation subs

EA has mentioned they have their priority list and like everyone out there, I really want to view it and then organize it myself. There are certain features/gameplay additions that should be included to make NCAA 2010 leaps and bounds better than 2009 will be. The interaction in the forums is the beginning of a beautiful relationship and with the continued visits from developers future sports video games titles are only going to move towards perfection.

I love to see them bring back long hair. so many players these days have dread locks and stuff. another thing they should add is the amount of accessories a player can wear. like mask under Neath there helmet when its cold, hand warmers, more types of cleats and long sleeved and short sleeved shirts, Nike etc...
fficeffice" />>>
They should also change the way a QB stands in the pocket. they should make them move around a lil bit more to were there reading there #1,2,3 WR. they should also have more throwing styles for QBs. like do they have a quick release or do they a long slow release. and the list can go on.
>>
Another thing they should take from madden is the players body type. what i mean by that is, you should have to be a certain weight or height to be ripped. like Brandon Jacobs is 6'4 265 lbs and he's one of the most build ripped guys i've ever seen.

The last 2yrs ncaa football has not lived up to the hype. So these are some of the things i would like to see added back to the game or added to:

Bring back FCS schools. the older versions of the game used to have them. Or at least bring back the ability to create a school and make there playbooks and design there stadium the way you want to. NCAA basketball has well over 150 teams on that game, why can't ncaa football have that many. For example, I went to Howard U. I would love to play with them on the game. I mean what school is named FCS west? Have you ever heard of them? No, well nether have I.

They need to add a pre game show. Having the commentators explain why they think a teams going to win, the key players to watch for, and the fan screaming behind or in front of the set. They should also show the players coming of the locker room, onto the field the way they do in real life warming up on the field. They should also have an half time show that shows the high lights of the half and what the teams need to do to when the game in the 2nd half. And then they should have a post game show high light the players of the game and why the team the won, won. They should also add a BCS show at the end of the season showing teams are going to play each other and who’s playing in the national championship.

You should be able to give one player from offence and one player from the D the same number like Vidal Hazelton and Cary Harris who are both #7 and Spencer Vigoren and Gerald Washington who are both #81 from USC.

They should make rival games and championship games should be more heated. there should be a lot more trash talking and big hits. When UF and FSU play in real life there a lot of bad blood. They should add fan running on to the field after a big when of any sort. Because the national championship as a sorry ending to it.

after thinking on this for the last few days the only other improvement i'd like to see on an already excellent product would be :1) please gove us more uniform and apparel options. For instance if a team has uniforms sponsored by adidas or under armour can we get the matching glove and cleat/shoe combination? also in line with that would be to give us the choice to have white, black or team color shoes......i think that'd be awesome. and 2) Can you please fix the instant replay? it takes away from the suspense of the game when every time there's a fumble you know it's going to get overturned. i've had it happen to me when i get a bone-crushing sack on the QB and the ball comes flying out the minute i hit him, the CPU would go to instant replay and overturn it. That gets me steamin as i'm sure it does other people. Thats all i got as far as improvements to the 2010 version. Eagerly awaiting it's release.

My must have upgrades
- the battle in the trenches is absolutely pothetic. When a guy warps off of a block to make a tackle it makes me furious. The line is absolutely horrible.
- ok ya got to make the gameplay significantly better. It seems like every year that ncaa is a year behind madden in gameplay. Why this is ? i dont know. An example of one area. The running backs. the new left joystick juking that was added rarely ever works and is stupid. And atleast add an element into the game where a home run hitting running back can be a homerun player without being fast. I mean it is so stupid that normally you can only break one tackle and you always get tackled on the second attempt by a defender. Never can a good brk tkle / truckin running back break tackles by two defenders that are running at him whereas an elusive runner can somehow have them dive at his legs and they both fly off. I mean seriously make the bigger running back as good as he should be. Plus things such as running the option offense. It is to good in one way and not good enough in other ways.

BUT THE NUMBER ONE THING THAT PISSES ME OFF ABOUT NCAA FOOTBALL IS PLAYER RATINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THESE ARE HORRIBLE. FOR EXAMPLE I'M AN ACC FOOTBALL FAN. UNC FAN IN FACT. OUR RATINGS WERE HORRIBLE BUT I DON'T THINK I'VE EVER SEEN RATINGS AS STUPID AS THE ONES GIVEN TO GEORGIA TECH. THERE WERE PLAYERS THAT WERE 90 OVERALL THAT NEVER PLAYED AND THE GOOD ONES GOT RATINGS OF 70 OR 80. ALSO JONATHAN DWYER RECEIVED A RATING OF 81! SERIOUSLY . AND MORGAN BURNETTE RECEIVED THE SAME RATING AND HE LED THE NATION IN INTERCEPTIONS. I MEAN THERE WAS SO LITTLE TIME PUT INTO CORRECT ROSTERS IT MAKES THE CREATORS OF NCAA FOOTBALL LOOK IMPUDENT. PLUS THE BIG SCHOOLS ARE SO OVERRATED. OHIO STATE AND PENN STATE EVERY YEAR AND FLORIDA STATE RECEIVED A 99 RATING ON D. OH YAH AND THAT 99 OVERALL TEAM GEORGIA. WELL YA THEY WEREN'T SO NICE.

yea georgia was terrible this year

im a Tennessee Vols Fan and i think it would be awsome to run out of the T on in game entrances. It would also be cool to have locker room speeches before the game and at half time. Get rid of Lee Corso all he does is take up data it gets tiring hearing the same crap over and over again so the commentators need to have more relistic quotes and more random . It would also be nice to be able to create your own plays and dont forget the OPTION in the play creating. Think about the entrance it is the most important part of my suggestion Notre Dame coming out of the locker room and onto the feild or running outonto the field as a rival at Death Valley being booed by thousands of screaming fans. That would give those of us who never had a chance to play college football the relistic experience. Also Im playing with WKU Hilltoppers and Ive been 1 for three years straight it would be nice to rebuild the stadium for more fans because we all know that in real life there are those who jump on the bandwagon when a certain team becomes the top team. Instead of there being a mascot mode there should be a Athletic Director mode like the franchise mode on madden.

No one knew how good those teams would really be, it's not EAs fault. And not too many people knew how dynamic Florida was going to be last year. It's hard to rate teams depending on how good you think they are.

for the team specific entrances, would that include the byu haka? If not, i would recommend it for Cougar Fans everywhere.

If I am winning by 24 in the 4th quarter, the stands shouldn't be full with 3:00 left to go as I am running out the clock. It would be nice to see fans leave not only in a blowout, but when the game is prettymuch over.
the stadium will be empty try wining by 40 points the stadium is empty

yah team entrances would be really sweet. Teams like clemson and the hill and the ramblin wreck with tech. But the gameplay is so much more important this year. It has a lot of work that needs to be done. Yah gatorman yall deserve any 99 rating yall get. I would have to brandon spikes is my favorite linebacker in america by far.

# 190 husk3rfan9287 @ 03/23/09 01:57 PM
I would like to see the Senior Bowl brought back, they had it in the PS1 versions and it was cool

# 191 gatorsfan46 @ 03/26/09 06:33 PM
yea brandon spikes will be drafted in the top ten in 2010 he has great pass coverage and he can step up and stop the run. Gators are going for the repeat.

# 192 huskerfan101 @ 04/10/09 02:00 PM
On 08 the dynamics were horendious. Please please please make the players flow better. And make a tackle look like a tackle no more of the getting pushed and just falling down.

(Campus Legend too please)

# 193 huskerfan101 @ 04/13/09 02:26 PM
If your gonna make campus legend the same as the last three years THEN DONT MAKE IT AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

# 194 doom41 @ 04/13/09 09:34 PM
I like the OC/DC Idea. They could have their own ratings in the "Coachable" Attributes(tackling, blocking, awarness etc...), and that would give your players a 0-5 point boost in those attributes. And the OC/DC's ratings would improve each year like the players ratings do. Then If your team is successfull other teams could hire them as head coaches, and you would have to hire a replacement.
