Why Next-Gen Sports Games Disappoint

It was December 1986. I was a mere lad of five, spending my third holiday season in our new family home in rural Illinois. My parents had requested that I construct a list of things I might want for Christmas. As my writing skills were not exactly eloquent at the time (and even now, they have only slightly improved), I enlisted the assistance of my eight-year-old sister to construct a hard copy of my holiday wishes. Sitting on the 1970s-style orange shag carpet of our family room, I rattled out a list of every single Masters of the Universe action figure I could think of. I had been to the Toys "R" Us in a neighboring town, and for a five-year-old, I had become remarkably familiar with Matel’s entire line of He-Man toys.

Then came the big morning. I had stayed up almost all night on Christmas Eve, lying in bed staring at the electric candle on my window pane, eager for sunrise so I could reenact scenes from my favorite cartoon. After opening every one of my perfectly wrapped presents, I sat in utter disbelief, as not a single Masters of the Universe toy sat beneath the tree. Not Beast-Man, Evil-Lyn, or the Castle Grayskull playset.

Now don’t color me ungrateful. I did get an excellent Tyco Lamborghini Challenge electric race track and a full set of Fisher-Price Construx, both of which were on my list and gave me a great deal of enjoyment for years to come. But I couldn’t help but feel a bit cheated. It was my first taste of that cruel truth that Mick Jagger had been telling the world about since 1968: "You can’t always get what you want."

Over two decades later, I still know this agony of dissatisfaction. Each year as of late, I am transformed into that same chubby-cheeked five-year-old, pouting in quiet discontent as my favorite sports games fail to meet my lofty expectations. And I’m not alone.

The next-generation era has been especially afflictive to the loyal sports gamer. Game franchises that were the model of consistency for our old Xbox and PS2 systems have sputtered in transition to our flashy new consoles. Graphics have improved, but at the expense of features and gameplay.

So why has this occurred? Have EA Sports and Take-Two decided to ignore their loyal customer base? Have league-exclusive licenses made game studios fat and sassy, content to line their pockets with our hard-earned cash while minimizing their efforts? Or are we all a bunch of five-year-olds, demanding the world and throwing a tantrum when we don’t get it? It’s a good question. I have some thoughts…

Turn Around Time

This should be fairly obvious, but sports game developers must operate at a much faster pace than traditional game studios. Some of our other favorite non-sports franchises, (Halo and GTA come to mind) had years to perfect their franchise sequels for the next generation of games. Sports game studios have a mere 12 months or less.

Add in the fact that the gaming industry was thrown a curve (albeit an expected one) with the introduction of the first next-gen console three years ago and it's not that surprising to find that some games sputtered early on. With the high demand for a year-one game release for some titles, corners were obviously cut. Since then, we’ve seen many of the studios’ efforts become a system of guess-and-check, as they scramble to meet their ever-approaching deadlines. Some new features are great, and we welcome them with open arms and salivating mouths. Others, we just assume excrete as soon as we taste them, hoping to be re-fed some of the last-gen features that are still strangely absent.

I will refrain from passing judgment on developer effort, as I am certainly not qualified to do so. Short of Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, iTunes, and some pedestrian Photoshop skills, I’m marginally computer illiterate. And I certainly have not been behind closed doors at EA Sports during game development. Like any other mass-produced product, however, I would assume that videogame development and production is a colossal chore. In our lust for the latest and greatest in sports videogaming, I believe that we are quick to lose sight of this fact.

The Economics of It All

I won’t BS you, I don't have a degree in economics. However, my 9-5 alter-ego spends his time in an office, heavily entrenched in the world of business. Thus, I have learned a few things about overhead, profit margin, and of course, supply and demand. Just so you don’t hit your back button right now, I’ll try to keep it light.

There is one fallacy that many a gamer falls into, and that is that game studios already make enough money and they should bite the bullet and spend more money on development to give us the games we have always dreamed of.

Sadly, no company will ever make “enough money.” Those of you who are already in the working world learned this quickly, and those of you who are not, soon will. Companies are always searching for ways to increase their year-over-year profits, even if it doesn’t seem to make sense to everyone else. Barring an overwhelming drop in sales, I highly doubt you will see a studio pour a noticeably larger amount of cash into development. That’s just capitalism.

However, it is my opinion that certain decisions in game development and direction are misguided. The best example of this is EA Sports decision to market some of their titles to the casual gamer, with brain-fart features like Family Play (motto: we'll just play the game for you! -- it's a wait and see when it comes to All-Play for now), Mascot Games, and Madden 09’s Rewind. It is obvious that EA Sports is using their monopoly of certain licenses to move beyond their niche audience, and seek out a fringe audience of non-serious gamers, highlighted by the recent success of the Nintendo Wii. In doing so, they have silently taken an arrogant stance that their sports titles (namely Madden) have become a commodity to their core audience. However, sports games are not electricity or heat. Therefore if pushed far enough or presented with an alternative, we can choose to go another route. I hope developers of exclusive-license games will take note; we are growing uneasy.

Are We Too Hard to Please?

We live in an era of instant gratification. We see something we want, and we get it. It’s strange to think that I never imagined myself one to download an entire music album, rather than to drive to my local Best Buy to purchase the CD. I always placed some sentimental value on having the album case and booklet. I can honestly say that it has now been two years since I have purchased an actual CD. iTunes is just too damn convenient. Such a society has made us rather averse to inconvenience. And that’s alright. But in those instances when we don’t have our desires fulfilled, we can get rather pissy.

Another factor is that we live in time when technology is making previously unimaginable things possible. Only a decade ago, I never thought I could check my fantasy baseball team’s stats and adjust my team’s lineup, all while sitting triumphantly atop the porcelain throne. I now want for nothing.

Sports games have also come a long, long way in our short lifetime. Look at this video from Madden 96 (one of my favorite Madden titles from my teenage years) and then this video for Madden 08. Quite a step forward in just over a decade.

Factor in all of these snippets, and it’s easy to see why we have such high hopes. We are a fickle, fickle group of consumers. We harbor gargantuan expectations because we have been conditioned to do so. And we shouldn’t stop. There are things that games can do better, regardless of studios’ economic situations and corporate demands. But they won’t correct them if we don’t tell them to, so sound off.

Wrap-Up

So why do next-gen games disappoint so frequently? It’s a complex question. And just like any complex question, it doesn’t have a black-and-white answer. There are a lot of variables that have gotten us here. But, rest assured, there's a light at the end of this tunnel. There is a place where studios’ time and money meets our demands. All we can do now, is be patient, and vocalize.

And if anyone is selling any vintage Masters of the Universe action figures, please let me know.

Until next week (possibly NSFW), Adiós Turd Nuggets.

Note: I know I’ve linked to this video before, but it fits the conversation, and the fact that it’s damn funny, warrants a repeat. Just to give you some fresh (old) funny material, check out the sweet pelvic gyrations of Rick Astley here.

No vintage Masters of the Universe action figures here as my mom made me sell them at a yard sale a long, long time ago....I did have Castle Grayskull AND Skeletor's lair....Ha Ha... ;0)

Man...Next-Gen Sports gaming HAS been the dumps so far...I expected sooo much from Madden, and EA has done nothing but disappoint me since 2006. The graphics are nice looking, but the effect they have on my desire to play greatly wanes once I've gotten a season under my belt in franchise mode and see everything I loved from last-gen gone and a bare bones franchise mode w/ this stupid ring builder crap that I would like to digitally melt down, make a bullet out of and...well I better not say.

These development companies etc. have had to make some serious cash since next-gen came about because if $$$ spent on man hours = the quality of the game then I would suggest that they haven't spent much time on these games and have essentially pocketed a crap load of money since not many resources were put into the game...Or it's either they don't know what the hell they're doing. One or the other.

Madden 09 is going to have to have a huge endorsement from the OS community before I go out and buy it this year. I can make due w/ games that have gotten it right on Next-Gen - GTA IV, COD4, Halo 3, and Mass Effect (which I haven't beat yet). And I will admit that I've so far enjoyed MLB 2K8, that is, after I started a new franchise w/ CPU trades off and finally found a good paid of sliders (that only took 3 months)...

Well if you're a big FB fan and have zero interest in hockey or soccer then it's been a major disappointment...

Madden... yeah, but has it actually ever been good?

In other words, not disappointing in the least.
I only agree with NHL and The Show. FIFA not there yet and neither is Madden.

Baa, you hit it on the Head. With all those games mentioned it kinda sheds a harsh light on Maddens shortcomings. But in all fairness I think we've seen a ray of hope as of late for the franchise, as well. It's now a matter of communication and being patient.....

By the way Will, thanks for making me feel old. I graduated in 1984. I was a sophmore when you were born. Dang......

P.S. where in Illinois? I was at Chanute AFB in Rantoul in 1986 in Tech School

I'm not disappointed at all but then again, I don't play EA Sports games.

Briankingsfan - I grew up around the Quad Cities. Although I did spend my college years at a certain school in Champaign, so I am quite familiar with the neighboring village of Rantucky.

And I apologize for making you feel old. I guess thank you for making me feel young!

Yeah, it's kinda sad Chanute doesn't even exist anymore. And seeing as I'm a Michigan fan from Ypsilanti, I'm familiar with beating a certain school from Champain.......

Yea the only thing I think has really changed for the worse is the exclusive deals.

NFL I thought Madden was really disappointing last gen the last few years. It seemed many people said the same back then, so I don't really understand all these people longing for those days.

NCAA I enjoy just as much, maybe more than last gen.

The NBA 2K series is still great. Same with College Hoops 2K. The EA basketball games still suck.

NHL seems to be better though I'm not really into hockey.

I haven't played the Show but everyone says it is amazing. MLB 2K hasn't been good in years, last gen or next gen.

Great write up. One Thing I would have added is the added cost of the game makes us expect more. They charge us ten bucks more a game and yet we get less than we could with the cheaper verisons.

I'm truly hopefully this is the year that starts to change, but with stadiums still missing from NCAA, Madden championing a feature not designed with true sports gamers in mind I'm already let down before they've even been released.

I guess I am disappointed the most because Im not really seeing an advancement in the football genre.

When I look at all the games that have come out for next gen, non of the sports games really wow me anymore. Other genres have come so far and are amazing to say the least...that when I put in Madden or whatever, I feel I have wasted my money.

There really is no excuse for sports games to be moving backwards. We still see the same glitches year in and year out with no fixes, we havent seen any increase in presentation ( and in reality...took a step back ) , we havent seen any new physics engines, we havent seen anything other than improved graphics. Its now time for football 09 season games to be released and we still havent got all the options we had back in 04 and 05 back.

My favorite sport game for the longest was NCAA football. Unfortunantly we are still not seeing much improved there either since back in 2002-2003.

I have heard the same commentary since I was stationed in Korea back in 01 I think. At the very least, it hasnt changed enough that I ever noticed it. They removed the stadium entrances, they removed the player warmups before the game, they have removed a ton, and not added much at all. 09 is looking to be different, but I wonder what will be broken upon release? Menus in next gen were so slow and laggy that hardly anyone could stand to use, Madden and NCAA both had 3-4 pick 6's per game which made it completely unrealistic...none of these problems were on the older generation games.

I really enjoy the basketball and baseball games that have been released, but football is lacking....there has been little to no improvement besides graphics in the last 8 years or so.

Well, I see a pre-game coin-toss with players on the field, a better play calling screen, and commentary. Those are all things that Madden doesn't have or didn't have until this year. That is sad.

MLB 08 The Show isn't even EA.

It's some other company... EA made the MVP baseball series, which obviously doesn't exist anymore. But MVP Baseball 2005 was a fantastic game.

He didn't say it was. This article was about games in general, not just EA.

Do we need to have a new version of our sports games each year? And if the game was perfect, from the beginning, would there be less employees needed for future renditions? Just something I have wondered even if it maybe be nonsense.

# 17 Crimsontide27 @ 05/30/08 07:27 PM
Do we really need a new sports game each year? No. Will developers and publishers forgo not publishing titles every year and miss a mountain of cash? No

They have plenty of time to make advancements to the game, its just they know they dont need to.

Each and every year, no matter what is released...majority of people will buy it. Its for this reason that we will see very little change in the football series. This year is looking better, but Im not going to hop on the hype train just yet. Ive been fooled before, so I have lowered my expectations in the sports game genre.

ill tell you what ruined madden..and mlb2k5...competition...or lack thereof...look at how nhl and fifa stepped up when they have nhl2k and winning eleven creepin on em..think about why ea didn't announce a fight night till prizefighter announced...cus you didn't have a choice but to play fight night..why don't you think madden hasn't changed a playbook since 2k5 stopped production ..then put double the feats in when all-pro game out..ohh does it surprise you that they gonna go all out when techmo bowl comes out..not that it's equal comp..but it's comp to say the least.. imagine mlb2k series with mvp or even high heat back...imagine if people actually played nba live..i bet we would have more than 3 roster updates in a year..

EA is like the wwf ..everyone loved wrestling when wcw was on tv and went head 2 head with monday night raw..but as soon as wwf bought everyone out..and got a new name...nobody tunes in anymore...

it's almost like the old saying for a bachlor..nobody thinks ur cute when your single ..but soon as you got a girlfriend(competition) the booty meter is up...

# 19 shondeveron @ 05/30/08 09:29 PM
hell nba2k doesn't even run plays on defence for the computer..even if you make them the vip..funny..
and i promise...i bet every dollar i have (which is only 20 if you count the remaining creds on my foodstamp card)
that madden will drop 2 out of every 10 games and give you a loss even if your winning..to this day it's the only game that does that..it's the only online sports game you can play that allows someone to quit and you don't automatically get a win less you play the cpu..
but we can rewind..lol
you can't even pick what you challenge online..come on guys..fix the challenges..like 2k's ..you can't even move more than one guy in motion after a player resets at his postion..you could do that on techmo bowl and joe montana's sports talk football..crazy..same playbooks..same glitches that allow qbs to roll out and throw over the middle..
bet it won't have defensive matchup options so you can put champ bailey on randy moss for the whole game..
but i bet my stamp card again you can fix how much the parking cost or they have some dumb ring meter..
you can't play with rain or snow online...and they got weather that leaves footprints offline..but if you get tackled in the snow..the players don't leave a BODY inprint in the snow..guys are 300+lbs in the league..but they got divisionless leagues..and legends..lol

they said you can port playbooks from the other game..lol..i bet you can't use em online..

bad thing is..ima purchase it at midnight at gamestop the night it comes out..call in for work the next day..like a dummy..why? cus how else can i play wit my redskins and the same playbook even though they got a differ coach and off coord..and d coach..

Problem is only the sim gamer hates madden. the casual gamer don't care that things are broken only that they can play with thier fav. team and run season/s. To them don't matter if you have the hulk on DL you'll still only get through 1/10 times. or that the ai is fundamentally flawed or they have band aids over issues instead of fixing them. It may not always look like real NFL game but to casual gamer it fits thier need or football fix. as long as EA sees a profit it don't matter what rating a gaming site gives it. it just needs to make a profit and as of last year it is still making money and will continue to make money. Therefore in EA's eyes no long term solutiion needed, just patch up a few problems and start on next years
