Should I move Kevin Millwood to the fifth spot in favor of that Eric Hurley guy that's now a budding superstar? What about trading Vicente Padilla for a few minor leaguers because he is eating at my profit margin? Such is the life of an addicted Out of the Park Baseball 8 fanatic I suppose. But then why does it feel so lonely sometimes?
There are three games I play every year and they are NCAA Football, Madden and Out of the Park Baseball. I have also dabbled in other text-sims such as the old Championship Manager, Front Office Football and Bowl Bound College Football but none of those games can match the kind of enjoyment I can get out of Out of the Park Baseball.
If there was a sport made for a text-sim, baseball I think would be the favorite due to its intimate ways of measuring individual performance through raw numbers. In fact, if you ever want to learn more about the business side of baseball then just pick up a copy of OotPB. Frankly it's the next best way to learn baseball business outside of being hired to be a real-life GM.
Of course, just putting Out of the Park Baseball in the same category as a business sim is a highly offensive thing to say. So let me make it clear that Out of the Park is a game about baseball.
As baseball season draws nearer and nearer you also see my hours playing Out of the Park go up exponentially. Which is odd to write because honestly, there was a time I would never look at buying a sports text-sim. Nowadays, they are my favorite sub-genre of sports games to play.
I would also love to say that my close-mindedness was an isolated incident, but I'm afraid there are a large number of gamers that don't want to play these types of games. Why is that? Will these types of games ever catch on?
One could say NFL Head Coach was the first major attempt to bridge the gap between the classic sports game genre and the text-sim one. Unfortunately, the first attempt was so terrible that I still consider it one of the worst 5 games I have ever played.
With the announcement of NFL Head Coach 09, it seems that EA Sports is going to give this thing another shot, but is the genre a viable mainstream attraction?
SI Games Football Manager 2005 was one of the top 5 fastest selling PC games of all time, mostly due to strong overseas sales. SI has developed Football Manager 2008 for the Xbox 360 which will be released late next month. So why aren't text-sims a big hit in America?
Maybe it is a lack of a big publisher putting their marketing prowess behind the games? Perhaps people just don't want to think that hard while playing a game? Maybe it's just a lack of attention span?
Speaking of which, I just got a trade offer from Atlanta, time to go discuss it. While I'm gone why don't you guys discuss why most Americans don't appreciate a good text-sim?
