There's nothing quite like knocking someone upside the head while wearing nothing more than a set of tight underwear. If you haven't had the opportunity to do so, I suggest you do it in the near future. Having said that, experts of this craft get their time to shine this week since THQ's WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 was released this week on every console not called a PC. Hardcore wrestling fans also probably know that a Japanese wrestling series that hasn't seen a US release since the Sega Dreamcast also released this week for the PS2: Fire Pro Wrestling Returns. It's a budget title that is retailing for $20 USD. In other words, it's time to start virtually wrasslin' again in one fashion or another. Also covered in the roundup this week are Madden NFL 08, NHL 08, March Madness 08, College Hoops 2K8, and NBA Ballers: Chosen One.
A couple of EA Sports titles received roster updates this week: Madden NFL 08, and NHL 08. Sure it's not the Madden patch everyone is awaiting, but it is the 5th roster update Madden fans have been able to download. Check out the provided link (thanks Pasta) to see what changes have been made.
NHL 08 fans on the other hand are receiving the update they have been anticipating. This roster update is the first of the year, and will hopefully appease the NHL fans out there who have been wanting their NHL and AHL rosters to be updated. Hopefully the next update won't take as long as this one did.
Some analysts, namely from Pacific Crest, believe EA will be dropping the prices on 14 games this holiday season, according to a 1UP news story. The titles receiving price drops -- if this happens -- will mostly be for the PS2. Obviously many questions and predictions could arise if this prediction occurs. Is EA feeling the heat after the weak fiscal quarter? Does EA believe the PS2 is no longer a viable market and is reacting accordingly? Those are just two questions, but nevertheless sports fans will be watching this one closely, and if price drops across the board begin to occur, DSM will be right on it.
EA tried to ramp up the buzz for March Madness 08 by revealing its Top 50 players of all-time and releasing a video of Billy Donovan breaking down the low post moves available in the upcoming college hoops game. One note to make about the top 50 players: Only the players EA had the license to put in the game, made the list. Nonetheless the list stinks according to DSM members and myself. Staying with the hoops games, Midway released the first video showing off its take on the NBA "street" style of the game, called NBA Ballers: Chosen One. Dwight Howard and Al Horford are most notably featured in the trailer, but you won't get much of a feel for how the game plays or anything; the video is purely a way of starting the initial buzz.
Lastly on the agenda for this week is College Hoops 2K8. The game releases next week, and PastaPadre had a chance to sit in on a CH2K8 conference call with the game’s producer, Zach Timmerman. You can read his entire summary here, but the two pieces of info that caught my eye the most are listed below.
-2K Share is something they’ll be working in to the other 2K Sports titles. Pretty much anything that can be edited can be shared. With the roster files even things such as player appearances and court changes. Interestingly it was said that they’ll be able to monitor what is shared to make improvements for the future. For example they can see what people tend to do with the sliders and it may identify what people aren’t happy with out of the box.
-The demo should be out for the 360 very soon.
That's it for the roundup, come back next Friday for even more news bits.
