Sports Gaming Presentation: Does It Live Up To Your Standards?

As sports gamers, the one thing many of us look for in the titles we choose to play is the realism of the game. How does the real-life game translate over to its sim title? Does the gameplay feel the same as what we get to watch on TV? How do the graphics look?

One thing that many of us as sports gamers also look at is the fidelity of the game, and how it is presented to us while we play. From pregame setup and intro, to the atmosphere and emotion during the game -- including crowds, proper play-by-play/color commentary and teammate reactions -- to stat overlays and player information, to halftime (if applicable) and postgame shows/information.

Over the years, and leading to our current generation of gaming, presentation has come a long way. We get to, for example, watch Shaq, Ernie and Kenny Smith give us a pregame breakdown of the upcoming match in NBA 2K16; Doris Burke handles in-game player interviews and gives you injury updates among other things. Stat overlays are handled by 2K Sports’ broadcast package, which bears resemblance to that of ESPN’s. In NHL 16, Doc Emrick and Eddie Olczyk give you the pregame rundown, while also handling commentary duties; they’re joined from time to time by Ray Ferraro, and all overlays are handled nicely by the NBC Sports broadcasting package.

Looking at the two previously mentioned titles and the updates they’ve gone through, are current presentation packages as real as it gets, and up to par for today’s console power and capabilities? Let’s take a quick look at the one title that revolutionized presentation packages as a whole for sports gaming and changed the landscape to bring us to where we are now.

NFL 2K5 – A Presentation Package Ahead Of Its Time

In July 2004, after the continuing success of ESPN branding, 2K Sports released ESPN NFL 2K5 to the football masses. With a deeply reduced selling price ($19.99) the game not only had its normal set of returning fans, but ushered in a whole new set of fans thanks to the pricing of the game. Building on ESPN NFL Football from 2003 (the only year that the 2K title was not used in the series’ title), the game was critically acclaimed. One of the most noted and talked about reasons for this was the overall presentation package of the game.

The feature of SportsCenter, hosted by Chris Berman, was something that was not seen in a sports video game and was quite refreshing for gamers both new and old. Like its real-life namesake, a mini pregame show was introduced, with Chris giving a quick rundown on both teams sitting at the SportsCenter desk. At halftime, he would break down key plays from the first half, along with full team stat comparison and player stats.

In Franchise mode, the player would get a weekly SportsCenter show breaking down all the games for the week with scores and stats. You’d also get to see in-game highlights from key games of the week. Trey Wingo, Chris’ co-host, would chime in with the injury report and any free-agency deals or trades. Sideline reports in-game would come from Suzy Kolber, while anything regarding the NFL Draft was handled by Mel Kiper. All in all, the presentation package as a whole was almost a mirror image of what any football fan would see on Holy Sunday.

Today’s Presentation Packages – Where We Are Now

Today’s games, 12 years later, have come a long way and have built presentation packages that keep gamers informed and entertained. Whether it be the previously mentioned NBA 2K16 or NHL 16 games, or the newly released Madden 17, where newer additions like animated starting lineup introductions and the new "Pylon Camera" are shown on touchdowns. What we’re seeing today is involved presentation that flows seamlessly with gameplay, and has us watching all aspects of our game.

Producers and designers continue to push the envelope, adding in small but noticeable changes that make titles look as close to the real-life presentation package as possible. For example, leaked footage came out yesterday, but was quickly removed showing David Aldridge on the sidelines in NBA 2K17, as well audio of Brent Barry, Doris Burke and Greg Anthony.

We can all see and agree that presentation in sporting titles is only getting better and helps to give sports gaming fans, both casual and hardcore, a full-tilt experience that makes us go back for more each time.

So the question is are you happy with where presentation is in 2016, or did you think we would be further along by now?

It's gotten a lot better overall-- but we would not be doing history service if we didn't mention madden took HUGE STEPS BACKWARDS for presentation for a number of years, before they got it right this year.

there is still a lot that has been taken away like showing other games and weekly wrap up shows.

For me I would say some sports games like NBA 2k ,MLB and sometimes NHL presentation live up to the hype for me.

I still don't see why 2K or Madden can't give a 2K5 good halftime show, end of game recap and most of all, a weekly show during a Franchise. Got plenty of storage to build on. If it wasn't already done then I understand, but this was done on the OG Xbox and PS2 (with HDD) 11 years ago!

TheBadazz, Cleve07103, I agree with you guys...that was part of the motivation for me to write this piece. Madden has definitely stepped it up this year, but I'd like to see a better half time breakdown and a weekly recap in Franchise as well. MVP talks, multi-game trends...these are all things that would really enhance the full experience for us gamers

Presentation in a game such as play now or exhibition is great. Where most of them lack is within the franchise modes. Very few do a good job giving you any kind of sense of what is going in the league outside of your own team. Very few, if any advancements have been made in this regard compared to other areas.

no mention of CH2k8. still one of the best presentations to date.
when it comes to 2k, 2k knows how to deliver.
Overall, Im satisfied with presentation.
Madden is finally catching up to all the other sports titles.

I agree. CH 2k8 on PS3/360 had an awesome end of week presentation and a great selection sunday presentation. Really wish they would have a weekly recap on the NBA games. I like most of the presentation stuff on 2k but a TNT or ESPN presentation would put it that much further to the good. I don't really play Madden or MLB so I can't say anything about those titles.

We just gon skip half time shows tbh. I would rather that focus be elsewhere. Hell most gamers don't even like looking at the player of the game highlights

Watching that video is almost sad. 2K got it at the time, the whole point of these games is to recreate the sports we know and love. 2K and EA have gotten way too obsessed with making everything original and plastering their own logo all over the place.
For my money the best presentation was on the last year of NCAA basketball from EA. The game itself was just ok, but it included both an authentic ESPN and CBS broadcast. It was awesome, nationally televised and tournament games on CBS had a different almost bigger feel than an ESPN game. I don't get why they don't just use actual crews, presentation, and layouts from actual networks. They don't need to innovate a thing... For me the current presentation is ok, but it could be so much better. We get that EA makes football, nobody else is allowed to, I don't need to see your logo on every sign in the building and or hear that it's on the EA network... same for you 2k!

Amen. A lot of people didn't play that game and don't realize how cool that authentic dual broadcast was. It literally was the only reason I kept playing a very subpar hoops game. If NCAA only used one of those broadcast teams it would be the same complaints of relative, boring commentary. But having two kept it fresh and did add weight as the CBS games felt special

NBA 2K needs the kind of halftime package NFL 2k5 had.

Often times NBA 2K is generic where the in-game footage show in more highlights package than breakdown of play. In a game where the x's and o's matter and most of the commentators are former coaches themselves, the halftime breakdown should speak to actual play-calling on court.

Think JvG breaking down plays during the break where there are freeze frames and graphics overlays to show play development

I preferred madden 05 over 2k gameplay wise overall. However presentation was amazing. Still don't think a game has topped it yet.

the dual network presentation in NCAA basketball was good, but its easily forgotten because the game-play was horrible.
NCAA football 14 presentation was decent also. very bland, but did enough to keep one immersed. gave just enough details.

again, I think for the most part all games have delivered

My bad on the College Hoops omissions...CH2K8 definitely took the NFL 2K5 recipe and put it to use.

Quentin32 made a valid point, most people skip over half time shows. What a lot of people really want is the weekly recaps and that kinda stuff...ESPECIALLY in Franchise/Career modes.

bALLDAYLONG_J10, one thing I had talked about with my OS homies was wondering if 2K was going to pull an EA and try to get the ESPN licensing since NBA Live is on the fence...then the video was leaked showing David Aldridge and the audio of Brent Barry. NBA 2K's whole presentation package, like I mentioned in the piece, is VERY similar to ESPN's without the actual branding. If you manage to get Charles Barkley with Shaq, Ernie and Kenny you have the full panel...touching on what you said, adding Kenny's run up to the big screen at half time like he does in real life would be a NICE touch...with the changes 2K looks like they made this year...we might be REAL close to the full deal

I wonder if this is just a cheaper way for 2k to up their presentation without going full on license. Or perhaps they don't go full license because it would limit them a bit. They have a mix of TNT and espn talent so getting a license for one or the other would likely mean they would have to lose certain TV personas.

The way they have it now is actually pretty clever because they can sort of mimick both broadcasts if they'd like. I'd love for 2k to take it a step further and have two completely different broadcast options with completely different overlays, commentary teams, and presentation packages. They could do something along the lines of 2KNT (2k Television network) and 2KSN (2K Sports Network). It could be random or you could chose a specific broadcast setup. This would take presentation to the next level, imo, because you would actually feel like there are different stations covering the games and would also help limit repetitiveness.

2k5" presentation is the Goat Right now. This not only looked cool at the time, but it added a replay value
Because you wanted to hear and see all the presentation cut scenes and Interviews. I honestly believe we took a step back, NBA 2k does a greatJob with the halftime and end of game interviews. Just not enough of breakdown of x's ando.s. EA fell asleep in this area for a long time. Still no halftime intervews with /audio or end of game interviews with audio. Stat overlays were great too from 2k. When you see some one is having a good day from the stats you wanna keep feeding them. One of my favorite features is the player specific trash talk on the field that was nice.

nba 2k16 is the champ right now....hands down. love that one. madden should have passed nfl 2k5 a long time ago. madden could at least get the nfl network license, for pete's sake. even ncaa 14 was better overall.
