Team USA in NBA 2K17?

Ever since Paul George was announced as NBA 2K17’s cover athlete, fans of the series have focused on a small, but key cover detail: one of the pictures of Paul George features him in his Team USA uniform. Of course, this doesn’t guarantee we will see some sort of international competition in the game, but it would be an odd choice to feature that jersey on the cover if it weren’t somehow in the game.

If 2K does decide to include Olympic teams, it wouldn’t be the first time. Back in NBA 2K13, users could not only play as the star-studded 2012 team, but also the original 1992 Dream Team, including Charles Barkley. There wasn’t much beyond the surface, though. Users could use these teams in exhibition mode, and that was about it.

So what would Olympic play in 2K17 look like? The most obvious choice is the inclusion of the 2016 Olympic team. But what about beyond that? Who would they play? It’s unclear if the 1992 Dream Team would be included again. Scottie Pippen was not on the original list in 2K13, but was added later due to fan backlash. But the bigger issue is Charles Barkley. Prior to 2K13, he had not appeared in a video game since the Sega Genesis days, nor has he appeared in anything since 2K13; not as a player, or even as part of TNT's Inside the NBA crew. Sure, you could include the Dream Team without him, but it wouldn’t be the same.

"What about taking the countries with the most NBA talent and allowing users to build a team comprised of the best all-time players from that country?"

But what about the teams from all the years in between 1992 and 2016? What about the teams from 1996, 2000, 2004 and so on? It would be fun to pit the various iterations of Team USA against each other. Yes, the 1992 team is the gold standard, and the 2012 team is perhaps the most star-studded since 1992. And yes, the squads in between those two teams were somewhat disappointing. But there was a significant amount of talent that passed through Team USA basketball during those years. Maybe it’s just me, but attempting to take down the 1992 Dream Team with the 2000 roster, for example, seems like a fun challenge.

If 2K really wants to include the authentic Olympic experience, they should get as many international players and country licenses as they can so users can replicate the actual Olympic games, all the way through awarding bronze, silver and gold medals. I’m not sure of the feasibility here, but with plenty of NBA players who play for other countries, it’s worth looking into.

Or if 2K really wants to think outside the box, what about taking the countries with the most NBA talent and allowing users to build a team comprised of the best all-time players from that country? Sure, Team USA would be the clear favorite here, but it would be interesting to see how all-time teams from Spain, Canada, Germany, etc. compare to each other.

Of course, this is all speculation. For all we know, Team USA will not be featured in 2K17 at all. But if it is, here’s hoping 2K takes it a little further than a quick exhibition game. A feature-rich Olympics mode would breathe some fresh air into the franchise and give users another way to enjoy the NBA 2K series.

it would be weird to have the Australian team in and not USA. that commercial should confirm that. if they could just get the rest of the Olympic teams with correct ratings with nba players and use generic names for the rest of the players, that would be fine. we could just edit the real names in. i've said all along that they should have included national teams instead of euroleague teams. an Olympic mode would make it complete.

There is a pc mod for nba 2k14 called FIBA2k that still gets update by they producer which simply brings to that 2k plataform the whole FIBA tournament experiences. They are able to replicate the jerseys of each national team, adjust ratings (because we know there is no national team that can play against USA, but you have to see the league and understand that some players play better in this tournaments than in the NBA so they should have a rating that let them play better when using the national team), and even create "cyber Faces" for those international player that wont get a face scan from 2k.

Man NBA Live where able to sell some copies of their games back in 2009 just because they had a little FIBA tournament with a nice international atmosphere. If 2k really put some work on this they could develop this game to a global thing just like FIFA in soccer. The NBA already have a big influence from many international players, just look at the draft and how many lottery pick have being international kids that already play for their national teams just like karl towns and andrew wiggings (dominican republic & Canada and former ROY's)... Imagine how fun it would be for a International 2k player to get their national team, face it against USA and beat them!!!

Add this FIBA tournament to the different game modes (MyGM/MyLeague/MyCareer) and man !! this game would be just the best of the best... Take your my player and add Gold Medal as a milestone its gonna feel as good as a championship, and will alsogive me reasons to play the MyCareer game mode for more than 1 season.

Man i wish 2K can really bring this to the game, I know it wont be great for right now, but we deff need it

I think it's a fantastic idea ... provided it is accompanied by an own game mode, which could be used for example with national teams (Olympic Games, for example) and Euroleague teams ... for use only in friendly matches has not much attraction!

Well......this is obviously happening. Most likely 2k is waiting closer to the Olympics to announce it. Must likely going to unveil it next week.

Either way GREAT addition no matter the capacity.

2k gives you a lot of meat an potatoes for that $70......can't hate on or get mad at that.

The moment they showed Paul George in team USA jersey, and gave the release date.which is 3 weeks right after olympics basketball stops. so hype would still be there. Only reason I believe they moved up the date even more than last year also makes the most sense.

The ONLY reason Barkley did that for 2K13 was as a favor to Jay-Z.
He wasn't going to be in there originally--the first screenshot of the in-game team didn't have him.
He was, almost literally, a last-minute addition.

He refuses to have his likeness put in games because of something about how he hates the players' union for not taking care of older retired players.

I think you have a point in that they could certainly capitalize on the international market by including more teams, and national teams that are non NBA. Makes me wonder if China is in there.

Anyway, that would definitely be a great mode addition, especially if they can add the exhibitions, and the qualifying part of it at some point.

Ah, my mistake. After 2K5, the next one I played was 2K11.

My point still stands as to why Barkley isn't in today's games, though.

Not sure I'm liking the wording to this. It's sounding like this is just going to be another quick game deal with this. A jersey for your MyPlayer with pre-order? Come on now 2K don't screw this up.

And will they have the correct accessories and hairstyles. Or can we edit them ourselves?

Im praying the ice is finally about to break in regards to that.

I have said it before but I am still containing my excitement until we are told how this is implemented into the game, if its just a play now type of deal similar to 2k13 then label me not excited.

I hope 2k did it right this time and it wont just be a back of the box feature that grabs customers attention.
