WWE 2K17 NXT Edition Announced with Exclusive Content

2K Games held a conference call to announce a new special edition for WWE 2K17 coming this fall. The NXT Edition will release on October 11, 2016 along with the standard edition. The NXT Edition contains the following:

  • Copy of WWE 2K17 video game

  • Exclusive premium packaging

  • NXT Enhancement Pack:

  • Playable NXT Superstars: Shinsuke Nakamura, Nia Jax and Apollo Crews

  • 50 percent more points at NXT in MyCareer

  • Exclusive Canvas 2 Canvas lithograph designed by WWE artist Rob Schamberger and autographed by NXT Superstar Shinsuke Nakamura

  • Exclusive eight-inch “Demon” Finn Bálor collectible figurine

  • Exclusive Topps NXT TakeOver: London Mat Relics Card:

  • Each card will include a piece of authentic ring canvas from the event

  • Each card will feature one of 14 featured Superstars from event

  • Each Superstar’s card will have one of 10 different rarity levels

  • Goldberg Pack: access to two playable versions of legendary WCW and WWE star Bill Goldberg, as well as playable WCW Monday Nitro and Halloween Havoc arenas.

The NXT Edition will be available on PS4 and Xbox One with 50,000 total copies available (which I assume is 25,000 per console). The price will be $99.99 and will be available for pre-order at select retailers today.

I took one major detail from the conference call and press release: Shinsuke Nakamura, Nia Jax and Apollo Crews are EXCLUSIVE to the NXT Edition. I asked 2K about the question of their exclusivity and was given the following response:

“We know many of you may have questions about playable NXT Superstars Apollo Crews, Nia Jax and Shinsuke Nakamura in WWE 2K17. Please note the following:

  • The NXT Enhancement Pack, which includes access to the NXT Superstars, is available on launch day for consumers who purchase the WWE 2K17 NXT Edition for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One;
  • PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consumers who do not purchase the WWE 2K17 NXT Edition can purchase the NXT Enhancement Pack through the game’s downloadable content program later this year
  • Consumers who purchase WWE 2K17 for PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 platforms can purchase the NXT Superstars as downloadable content starting on launch day.”

I also asked about the Digital Deluxe and whether it would include the NXT pack like the Hulkamania Pack was included in the Digital Deluxe for WWE 2K15, and was told “the Digital Deluxe Edition will not include the NXT Enhancement Pack.” I was not given a timetable for when the pack would be available to purchase or whether it would be a part of the season pass.

I’m not a fan of holding active superstars behind a paywall like this. When it was the Hogan pack, Warrior pre-order bonus or even Goldberg this year as a pre-order bonus, they are all at least legends who weren’t on WWE programming on a weekly basis. In this case, fans of these three superstars have to buy the $100 NXT Edition to be able to play them on PS4/XB1 on launch. Especially for gamers who are digital only, you have no other recourse than to wait for the pack to be available on the respective digital storefronts.

Shouldn't have to pay extra to use those 3. Should be in by default.

$99 for 3 exclusive talents and a figure and it doesn't include the season pass. I just want the entire roster available from the beginning. If your just buying the base game you have to wait until it's released in late 2016/early 2017.

I would really like to have Shinske but i've been digital only for about two years now. I guess I'll wait until they release it.

2K is quickly ruining this series....if you buy a game everyone should be playable. If you want to make us have to unlock characters that's one thing. But half the roster you are going to wind up having pay additional cash for.

I agree, think I might have to pass on this even though I really want Apollo and Nak for my universe...

However, does anyone know if we can buy characters in a dlc pack separately? Like say Umaga, Rey Mysterio, and Rhyno were in a pack and I only wanted Mysterio. Do they still do that?

The value proposition of this edition is awful.

I don't want a Finn Bálor statue, trading cards, a piece of a ring mat, or a poster. I want a complete roster and a compelling video game. There's no way I'm paying $40 extra for three new characters, who let's be honest won't have radically different gameplay mechanics from the presumably 80+ avatars on-disc.

Business as usual for this series, unfortunately.

Plus they'll probably be free dlc down the road.

On the contrary, I'm gonna guess these characters will be publicly available behind a $10 pay wall in like February.

Unlike every single one of its contemporaries, this series' developer never meaningfully extends the game without expecting cash immediately in return, which is a big reason why WWE 2K in my opinion has easily the worst track record of post-release support among all AAA sports and fighting games.

How about a WWE 2k17 full/entire edition 2k?...

"Half the roster" is a bit of an exaggeration for having to pay for 3 characters (that will be available as DLC later this year) out of 100+ superstars on the roster. Everyone is overreacting greatly to this. This is something 2K and THQ have done for years. Personally, I think it does suck they are exclusive to this pack alone, but it isn't the first time they've done this. Having Nakamura, Crews, and Nia makes me want to get this. It's a pretty decent deal.

Furthermore, 2K is bringing this series to heights we've never seen before. WWE 2K16 was easily one of the best games in the WWE games series. 2K is better than what THQ would've given us. I expect 2K17 to be even better.

These guys are on TV every week....no logically reason to have to pay extra for them. There should be virtually currency earned by playing the game to unlock them. Or the option to just pay and get them. That would be fair.

Not free. It says in the article:

Buying this edition just gets you them at launch.

You can pay to get them down the road. I agree they should be in regardless, but I just don't understand the logic that 2K is ruining this series by having 3 popular superstars in a preorder. The game should be better this year

So, this alone turned 2k17 from a must-buy to a must-avoid.

I'm not paying 40 dollars more for the total of three things I want, all characters.

You don't hold characters hostage.

Because it's not just these 3....you know there will be at least 3 packs of wrestlers on top of this that we would need to pay for.

Those additional packs would be a part of the Season Pass, which is not included in the NXT Edition.

I could look it up (and will later if nobody knows now), but does anyone know offhand how this compares to other fighting game DLC pricing? And in structure (meaning, some content not part of a season pass)?

# 19 cjallure24 @ 07/14/16 09:05 PM
This is just a slap in the face. Plain and simple.

# 20 nml11287 @ 07/14/16 09:39 PM
Really -_-

I mean I love the Nakamura autograph, but what the hell am I going to do with a trading card and a statue of a man in a speedo and facepaint? Definitely wouldn't be displaying that in my place

On top of all of that, it doesn't even come with a season pass. Looks like I'll have to wait those 90 days for the DLC to be released. I'd rather only pay $25-$30 for a season pass than $40+the season pass for 3 wrestlers that are ALREADY locked away on the disc and the rest of the DLC packs.

I was totally gonna buy this game on day 1. This just moved to probably an after Christmas purchase (or whenever the Nakamura DLC comes out).
