WWE 2K17: Keys To Success

The WWE video game series lingered around directionless for years. The graphics weren’t great, gameplay was stale and it often didn’t feel like a wrestling game at all. Once it got brought under the 2K umbrella, fans of other 2K series’ immediately had high hopes and felt the series would finally make a leap to the next level. After a few years in the partnership, there is reason for optimism. Let’s take a look at a few things WWE 2K17 should focus on improving.

Gameplay

This is where it all starts. If fans cannot get behind the gameplay mechanics, then nothing else matters. NBA 2K has the following it does in part because the gameplay is so smooth, and it has been for quite some time. There is a solid foundation upon which the 2K team has the ability to make tweaks and adjustments, rather than starting from scratch each time.

This is easier said than done, but it’s best for the sake of the series if WWE 2K can start to cement the gameplay foundation. The developers have made some strides since taking over the franchise, but it’s been a bumpy ride with no clear destination. For example, after fans complained of too many reversals in 2K15, 2K16 attempted to right that wrong. Fan reaction was mixed -- the reduction in the number of reversals was appreciated, but it also had an impact on match strategy.

Professional wrestling is far more complex than it gets credit for, and getting that complexity to translate to a fighting game is easier said than done. Far too often, bouts get reduced to a button-mashing, clunky mess. It has no doubt gotten better in recent years, but 2K should really focus as much of its efforts as possible on polishing up the gameplay.

"It would be nice to have the ability to set a framework for a feud that includes the duration, as well as the number of matches."

Universe & Career Modes

Fans crave much more than solid gameplay. In addition, we expect captivating gameplay modes that will hold our attention until the next version is released. The Universe and career modes are what 2K has to offer. There are solid foundations here, but both could use some tweaking.

The career mode is already pretty strong. The point system by which you move up the ladder in NXT and then the main roster is solid. However, the temptation to pay money in order to boost your attributes is somewhat frustrating. Some middle ground here would be appreciated so as to avoid the initial frustration of getting whooped early on in your career.

2K also made some improvements with the Universe mode last year. They are headed in the right direction, but some more customization and more flexibility would be nice. Wrestling fans live to play fantasy booker, and while this mode allows for that to some degree, it could use more. Setting up rivalries is a nice idea, but the execution is quite basic and leaves a lot to be desired. It would be nice to have the ability to set a framework for a feud that includes the duration, as well as the number of matches.

"...it’s best for the sake of the series if WWE 2K can start to cement the gameplay foundation."

Graphics

When it comes to graphics and animations, WWE 2K is a mixed bag. Some of the wrestlers look just like their real-life counterparts, while with others it can be difficult to tell. The animations have always been an issue, even if that's less so the case in recent years. Still, it can be frustrating to be in the flow of a good match only to have it ruined by a few awkward animations. Some more polish in this department would go a long way.

The WWE 2K series finally appears to be on the right track. This is not something you could confidently say even five years ago. Progress may be slower than we’d all like, but as long as WWE 2K17 takes another step in the right direction, it will go a long way in helping to solidify the franchise's greatness.

Imo the biggest letdown is loading times, limited caw slots (and downloads) and very slow downloads from CC.

The gameplay itself its kinda boring, but this has been an unadressed issue for so long that I actually don't care anymore.

I think something like this would be great and really make matches more exciting and dramatic to play;

Green Health - Can kick out any time
Yellow Health - 1 count disabled. Can kick out between 1 and 2 count and 2 and 3 count.
Red Health / Finisher - 1 count and 2 count are disabled. Can only kick out between the 2 and 3 count.

Boom, we could work at 2k my friend. Any devs reading this thread that may want to pay me an extremely generous salary to sit around and come up with gems like this? Pretty please?

Right off the top of my head...

1) Bring back story creator for Universe. Give us the ability to do scripts and narratives again.

2) Cage Matches....bring back the ability to get pin falls inside the cage with the ref in the ring.

3) The awful load times when downloading CAWS. It was painstakingly slow.

4) Commentary is the weakest in a sports game since those ESPN Baseball games with Chris Berman saying "back back back back."

Three high-level things I'd like to see:

1 - Atmosphere. The commentary in this game has never approached good. The crowd, while better than recent years, still is very formulaic and predictable in where, how, and when they will react. The core game is rock-solid, but after playing a dozen matches I've seen everything there is to see, I've experienced everything there is to experience. Change that.

2 - Context. Universe Mode needs a lot of love. A lot. It barely succeeds in putting a framework of a story around the matches the AI booker lines up each week. It also needs to be fully online-enabled and multiplayer to take advantage of this game's greatest strength, the core gameplay in a multiplayer setting. Change up the formula a bit with the 2K Showcase mode; it's still effective but it's stale. Keep improving MyCareer, and expand the MyCareer invasion feature.

3 - Respect. I've been yapping about this for a long time now - the post-release support policy for this game is offensive to customers, especially when framed against other AAA licensed sports video games and fighting games. Get with the times; build us a game you'll support year-round with more than just monthly paid content drops, give the user base free content to keep them coming back to the game, and rethink your game's monetization policy to support this philosophical change.

Well said.

This was the first wwe game I've picked up in many years. One thing I'm surprised isn't in the CAW features is importing music. MLB does it with sounds of the show. Would vastly improve creation features

MLB the Show is also the one that figured out how to do it ( probably from the devs themselves). And why give away secrets that are exclusive to your game?

If it's a system feature - as is the case on the PS4 now - all 2K has to do to figure out how to do it is consult first-party PS4 SDK documentation from SCEA. They don't have to talk to Sony San Diego at all to get custom music in, though they might reach out to them for some high-level pointers.

That said, the ability to implement custom music and actually scheduling dev time for implementing it are two different things. It's on 2K at this point to get us the features we want to see in the game.

Does XBOX One have custom music support in the way needed for custom entrance music? Not being able to implement on both consoles would probably kill the feature right away.

It's a shame both Sony and Microsoft got away from that this generation, but the current implementation of streaming off an external hard drive or Spotify or whatever else is good enough for 99% of games. How many games really rely on being able to store music on the hard drive and cue it up at specific in-game moments? WWE, NBA2K, and The Show are all I can think of.

For me it's all about Universe and gameplay. The gameplay was better last year and I hope they can improve on that. Now on the other hand Universe mode hasn't really changed that much and that's the only mode I play. I'm hoping they add a lot to Universe mode this year because if not I don't think I'll get this on day 1.

Needs a return of GM Mode. I found doing that was way more fun than actually playing matches.

Something tells me this year will be pretty much the same as last year, with just a fresh coat of paint, so 2K can get more of our money......
My guess, 6.5/10 overall rating (wish it weren't true though)

I feel the biggest problem with this game, and really every wrestling game in this regard, is that it misses what it's representing. The goal isn't to win. That's all predetermined in the real thing. The goal is to put on a performance. Making a fighting game with a health bar is never going to feel like wrestling. The match rating thing in career is a start. But I like how the Stone Cold story works. The ending is already set. You're job is to hit all the key spots. What about a career mode that focuses on putting on great matches to increase popularity and earn a push? Let a player map out the big spots they want to hit for themselves and their opponent and task that player with carrying it out. Design boring matches and your popularity with the fans doesn't improve. Fail to hit your spots and botch moves and you don't get that push from Creative. That sounds like a pro wrestling game to me...
