NHL 17 Q&A #2 - Collisions, AI Improvements, New Goalie Cam, No Roster Sharing & More

NHL 17 Producers are answering questions on their Ask NHL page, similar to how they did it last year. If you have questions, make sure to submit them here.

If you missed the first Q&A, you can read it here.

The Q&A is copied and pasted below for easier reading.

Are the customization options such as jerseys, logos and stadiums going to be able to be utilized in EASHL or is it exclusive to certain modes?

Yes. Our new EASHL club progression will open up the opportunity to build a unique brand and identify for your team as you progress from a Community Rink all the way up to a state of the art NHL Arena. Along the way you will be unlocking new uniform styles, logos, songs, arenas, and much more.

Will there be improvements to stick on body/stick on stick collisions?

Yes, we have made improvements to how we recognize stick-on-stick and stick-on-body collisions to determine if the puck should come free. We still don’t run full physics reactions for stick on stick though as players don’t currently have enough control to pull their stick through and evade in ways they can in the real world. That is why we still want to produce the right incidental contact effect on the puck though to reward defensive positioning. We have also made updates to how the puck comes loose when it collides with sticks, skates and bodies to ultimately reward good defensive position.

Has Opponent (or team) AI improved?

Yes, there have been a lot of improvements to both Offensive and Defensive AI to improve the flow of the game and the reliability of your teammates. You will see off puck defenders doing a much better job of sticking with their man and recognizing potential passing options as bigger threats. Those players will also utilize net battles to tie up players in front unchecked for long periods of time. On offense, the AI is smarter how they are moving the puck and in general has more flow during breakouts.

Is vision control back?

This is an interesting question as vision control has never gone. We have made many improvements to vision control and facing angles to give more control over your players. When you glide, you still need to pivot your hips to the direction you are moving, so there will be times when your facing isn't directly at the puck if what you’re trying to do isn’t physically possible. The changes we made to the angles at which you can do backwards cross-overs has made it much easier to move laterally when skating while facing up ice, and we have simplified your vision control targets so that it is much more consistent which makes defending off the rush much better.

Will there be any added camera views for game action in '17?

We have added a new camera for goalies that will be available at launch.

What improvements have you made to make goaltending more fluid and stand out verses previous years?

For goalies we have introduced a new save mechanic where they can make blocking vs reactionary saves. When they have the ability to get their body in front of a shot, they will -- using their chest and shoulders to block pucks rather than making reactionary limb based saves. For Player Controlled Goalies we have also updated the mechanics to get to the post quicker using reverse VH and butterfly leans to really seal up against the post. We have updated our precision movement to give more control and allow you to control the speed using the analog stick. We also made a lot of improvements to responsiveness by allowing you to exit out of animations – for example if you want to drop back down to butterfly before fully standing up. That's just some of the improvements we've made to goaltending this year.

As goalie, can you slam your stick off the post in frustration when you let in a bad goal or the defense leaves you hanging?

We have added new post goal reactions for goalies from many of the positions he finds himself in, so you will see more variety there. For NHL 17, we won’t be giving manual control over this though.

Is practice mode updated?

Practice Mode is fully featured this year with users being able to do Free Skate practices of just 1 player on 1 goalie as well as team practices with you creating the scenarios and Goalie Practice where you set the scenario and practice your goaltending skills. There is a way to learn the game for every situation.

Will the potential system in GM Mode remain with the "Elite," "Top 6," "Top 9," etc. system or could the star system make its return? Always preferred the star system over the current system.

The star potential system and the current system are one and the same. Elite is the equivalent to 4.5 star player and Top 6 is equivalent to 4 star and so on. This change was done to better convey what a prospects potential is.

Will you be able to play in the ECHL for all game modes?

We are excited about the addition of the ECHL in the game and for NHL 17 they will be available in the following modes: Play Now, Season Mode, Hockey Ultimate Team and Online Versus. With the ECHL being an affiliate league with the NHL we will be looking at whether to include them in our other experiences (Franchise Mode and Be A Pro) in the future.

Can we select third jerseys in HUT and EASHL?

In EASHL, you can use third jerseys however they will be an unlockable item so your club will have to progress to earn the ability to use their third uniforms. In HUT, you can designate a third jersey option as a home/away jersey but we don’t currently support an independent third jersey option.

Will there be any inclusion of a EASHL player progression or team progression system while still keeping an even playing field?

We are still focused on providing an equal playing field, but we’ve added an aesthetic progression element in NHL 17. All progression items the player or club can unlock are purely for visual appeal and will not give an unfair advantage in any way. Our hope is that we have the right amount of unlocks to keep our players wanting to play those few extra games to get the next unlock which they can show off to the rest of the EASHL community. Progression in EASHL is about being prestigious and showing that off to the world.

Can we make custom goalie masks?

Unfortunately, the ability to create custom goalie masks will not be in NHL 17 however, as we look to expand the vast array of customization options moving forward, goalie masks will be something that are definitely considered.

Will you guys consider the ability to make public rosters to share throughout the online community? It's a huge success with Madden and it generates over 13,000 shared rosters, playbooks and sliders per year.

Shared rosters will not be a feature for NHL 17 but we will consider it for future iterations.

Can we create custom teams/jerseys in Quick Play, HUT, Be a GM, and EASHL?

Create Team allows people to create teams and take them into Play Now and Franchise Mode. As well in the EASHL you will be able to unlock customization and then start to build your team identity using the create team tools. In Hockey Ultimate Team you will not be able to create teams and take them into the mode.

Every year most people ask for roster share or editable goalie masks or new designs for masks and every year it didnt make the cut but were looking into it ?

Maybe they just dont have the funds or resources to address these simple things but to just release the same core game year after year with a few tweaks its getting tired but any game is better than nothing but it sure is starting to look like its being mailed in each year.

Personally, I don't think that excuse holds a lot of water. For starters, a team that was likely smaller before the NHL series took off did amazing things at innovating the series back when hockey as a sport was less popular. They did it because they wanted to make the game a great representation of hockey, and in doing so totally changed the way the game was played by creating the skill stick.

I think my frustration stems from the fact that from all I can tell, EA's focus is nearly exclusively on HUT and EASHL. Game changes don't really seem to get much focus unless they directly benefit those game modes. Be a GM last year essentially became what it should have been in NHL15, which was NHL14's gameplay with small improvements. Honestly, they didn't add much. The interactions with players doesn't really seem to have an effect on anything, and just seems to be there to fill empty space. Same for scouting. My problem with Be a GM is that nothing matters.

I hate to sound so negative, but I guess I just get frustrated when people say "Well, you kind of have to accept it because it's a smaller team and a less popular sport". I don't hold it against the devs, they're just following the roadmap set by EA. I'm sure like any employee, they've got a list of things they would change in their product and at their company.

I just get frustrated when people try to let EA off the hook for feeding us garbage, because of the size of the team, or the popularity of the sport. They innovated before with a smaller team and a less popular sport, they can do it again.
This is exactly how I feel.

The EASHL should really just be a separate product.

SO much of what the online community vocally complains about ends up impacting what the offline community has to settle for. If the EASHL, which doesn't require the NHL license, could be a download on PSN/XB Live and be subscription based, they could probably actually increase profits by selling subscriptions, exclusive equipment and customization options, etc. while simultaneously dramatically increasing the quality of the NHL game, which does require the exclusive NHL license yet, unfortunately, sees the NHL portion getting the least attention.

It's a shame. I've been putting in some serious work this off season for the potential return of the Revamped Rosters. I have so much work done already - it's a shame it will be just for myself again this year.

If there is enough interest, maybe I could post a video of my ratings or maybe an excel spreadsheet.

I just think EA doesn't get it, making a roster isn't just about moving players around different teams or signing a player from free agency.

Its all about setting players apart from one another. I can deke through an entire team using a 60 overall player and sometimes lower, everybody's skill level is the same. And its been that way for some time now.

But what's going on, I understand that you guys at EA cant put players at a low overall rating. I know your guys hands must be tied in that regard, but ours are not.

Give us the freedom, too make a franchise player standout from a 4th line scrub in the AHL.

And if that's too hard, hire these boys from Revamped Rosters and sack that other fella.

Cheers mate, even we in New Zealand, would like too see sim hockey

That's been something that's frustrated me a lot with the series. The Show has been embracing customization for a while now. Custom slider sets, rosters, players (Their player creator is amazingly efficient. If you're curious head over to The Show's forums on this site and check the various Create a Pro threads people have going).

Even with EA's NHL, the roster sharing was never official, just a work-around that the Revamped team and others were able to capitalize on. If the NHL team really supported it, it would be great.

I've posted this type of thought a million times, but imagine being able to customize the ice texture, or create your own jerseys offline on a computer, and then import them via Xbox Live or your Playstation account. You could download them to your game, host them on the NHL team's servers and share them with everyone. A rating system would allow people to really get what they wanted, much like The Show does things.

I would love the chance to create jerseys for the international teams and edit their rosters and players to have some really accurate tournaments. Guys like the Revamped team do great work with the ratings, and really help to fine tune a game that's just too evenly matched. Rookies, veterans, franchise players, they just don't matter in the stock game, because every rating is so closely spaced. I know EA has a lot on their plate, and honestly, I think customization would help take a lot off of that plate. Keeping up with every rookie, team roster, and player in the NHL alone is a massive undertaking, let alone the AHL, juniors, and now the ECHL. Then you factor in International teams (I really hope teams like Japan and Kazakhstan aren't in any more) and you've just got a team that's either getting spread to thin to be effective on everything...or skipping out on included leagues because they're focused on the important ones. It's a lose/lose for them.

On Creating Teams...
- Anyone know if you can do it like NBA 2K16? On there you could upload logos to a site and bring them in and edit everything on the jerseys and more. Or is this where you just select a logo that is already on NHL 17 and use it?
- Also, so will you be able to create a team and use them from the start of a Franchise, by replacing a team? Or is this like Madden where you have to play as the team you want to replace, until you can relocate which is a pain?
- Last, no mention of it, but will there be custom draft classes? (I always make prospects for games to become future stars.)

That level of customization would be wonderful. I'd go absolutely nuts.

I work 50 hours every week and I found time to do the revamped rosters for myself this year. I think they can find some time to do it themselves.

Or, I would gladly leave my job for a position with them. The level of detail I would devote to it would be extreme. I can dream.

While I agree that roster sharing is long overdue, I would be happy with same day roster/lineup updates.

That's the extra salt in the wound. No roster sharing and only once a month updates (if that) that are woefully inaccurate or outdated. Not to mention horrific player separation....

Haha, no kidding. I work 40+ hours a week as a System Admin, and am studying for the god awful MCSA exams after hours (THREE TESTS, MICROSOFT?! YOU COULDN'T JUST MAKE IT ONE!?). But I would gladly bust out Photoshop in what little free time I had to create some crisp jerseys, updated helmets, and ice rinks.

Throwing teams like Slovenia into the mix and getting some customized international ice to have a tournament on would be so much fun. Then having talented people such as yourself to create accurate rosters, and others who like to make accurate looking players, and still others who have a knack for hammering out realistic slider settings...it would be a dream come true.

NCAA Football allowed you to import custom logo designs for years via their teambuilder site.

As to custom draft classes, the closest you'll get is the ability to edit draft-eligible players in the CHL and Euro leagues. You can't import a draft class or make players that don't play in any of those leagues AFAIK.

I feel like I start way too many sentences this way, but it confuses me how they haven't taken advantage of things like what NCAA had. I think that was back in 2013...

Since then, nearly everyone has ready access to high speed internet, more people have access to photo editing software, and more people are interested in sharing/customizing their games. Just look at Half Life 2. That game is still being modded, and it came out in 2004.

- So is it for sure that NHL 17 has it where you can upload images and not just use their default logos?
- Anyone know if you can start your franchise with these created teams, and not just have to move them during your franchise?
- It stinks that we can't make draft classes on some games, to me it's really important.
- Also, NHL still has where you can start off your Franchise Mode with a Fantasy Draft, right (it's been several years since I bought a Hockey game)?

Agreed for those of us who play offline and try to emulate the season this would be very welcomed addition and save me a ton of time
