Perfecting MLB The Show's Franchise Mode

This graphic overlay is just one example of a quality addition made to franchise mode in MLB The Show 16. (PSN: MikeLowe47)

Franchise mode received some significant attention in MLB The Show 16 with improvements being made to the scouting system, a new morale system, a plethora of expanded stats and even players finally being called up based on performance , not just injury (it never happened before -- go check!). These are wonderful improvements to an already terrific game. Yet I don’t think anyone would argue that while The Show is the best (only) baseball franchise on the market today, it does not have the best franchise mode in the sports world.

So what could be improved to put a future version of MLB The Show into that top echelon of franchise mode offerings such as the NBA 2K series? Here are a few ideas:

Smarter Bullpen AI

Without better bullpen AI, at season's end we get RPs with way too many IPs per game.

Smarter bullpen AI is an absolute must for this game and is something that is currently well beyond its shelf life. This is also something that would affect other modes against the AI such as Road to the Show and Domination within Diamond Dynasty.

Simply put, the AI does not do enough tinkering with its bullpen to maximize the effectiveness of pitcher/batter showdowns.

I played a game, which you can see on my YouTube channel, on Easter morning in which my Tigers were tied with the Marlins 4-4 in the 9th inning. With the switch-hitting Andrew Romine up -- hits left-handed pitching better than right-handed pitching -- the AI leaves the lefty Brad Hand in the game; Hand was originally brought in during the 8th inning. Why the AI is not bringing in a setup man or closer in a tie game at home in the 9th is another issue, but Hand proceeds to get Romine to fly out.

One out.

Next up is the pitcher spot, and I pinch hit to bring in another switch hitter and the AI leaves Hand in again. Okay, fine. Hand proceeds to get the out.

Two outs.

Next up are a series or dangerous right-handed hitters at the top of the order: Ian Kinsler, Justin Upton, Miguel Cabrera, J.D. Martinez -- followed by another right-handed hitter in Nick Castellanos. The AI leaves the lefty Hand in once more.

Kinsler doubles a 1-2 pitch down into the left-field corner.

Man on second, two outs. Tie game in the ninth. The AI still leaves the lefty Hand in the game.

Justin Upton hits a 3-2 pitch that is hit so deep it ricochets off the LF scoreboard for a two-run home run, giving the Tigers a 6-4 lead in the 9th. The AI now takes the lefty Hand out, and the incoming right-handed pitcher gets Miguel Cabrera to hit into a 6-3 groundout for the the third and final out of the inning.

The example above points out a number of flaws in the bullpen AI. I had the "Manager Hook" slider maxed out at 10, and the reliever stamina slider set to 1, and nothing was done to prevent the Marlins implosion by the hands of...well, Mr. Hand.

For the past number of years, it seems the game will only take a pitcher out when he's gotten himself into some trouble, which is fair enough as a blanket statement. However, what about situational pitching substitutions? It seems the Marlins could have used some situational awareness here. Even if I had left-handed and right-handed hitters alternating down the lineup, they should still be maximizing their matchups, especially against a top of the order containing multiple All-Star-caliber hitters.

This is even more true if the AI is not going to bring in the closer in the top of the 9th of a tied game at home. Instead, because Hand was "pitching successfully" getting the first two hitters out, he is left in the game. In MLB bullpens, "successful" is very frequently rewarded with a quick exit to give the pitching team a better matchup. This does not happen in The Show, and frankly it's off by quite a bit.

There are many of these sort of examples that can be brought to light, and this is just one from a recent game I played. Bad bullpen AI has plagued this series, and it's in need of some polish as it truly undermines the otherwise brilliant gameplay this series puts on display.

Better Sim Engine

The sim engine needs improvement in a number of areas. Don't believe me? Check against real-life MLB stats.

The sim engine is good, but two stats that are impossible to balance are pitcher complete games and shutouts. Some of the potential bullpen AI changes above may help remedy this, but consider this: In 2015 there were a total of 10 pitchers in MLB with at least three complete games. There were three MLB pitchers in 2015 who had three or more shutouts.

In the test sim I did in MLB The Show 16 (default sliders), I ended up with 80 pitchers who had at least 10 complete games, and 40 who had at least three shutouts. Even adjusting the sliders like a mad scientist does not remedy this -- trust me, I've tried for two years now.

Expanded Minor Leagues

It would be awesome to play rookie ball games with some of these guys.

We currently have AAA and AA as functional leagues in The Show, and an A-ball level that houses players. Admittedly, expanding the minors further would be a minor enhancement, and it's probably not completely necessary in a console game.

However, it would allow for a more realistic number of rounds in the amateur draft. And if these lower leagues were also playable, it would be fun to play some rookie-ball games with the prep player you just selected in the first round of the draft.

Rain Delays and Doubleheaders

Insert doubleheader here!

In the simplest of terms, rain delays and doubleheaders are a big part of baseball. They are just as authentic and valid as a particular pair of Nike batting gloves or an Under Armor arm band. And I don't write that just because it's fun to watch those old blooper tapes the local network has stashed away somewhere for such rainy days.

Rain delays and schedule adjustments add an element of cunning managerial decisions that must be made. Do you call up a spot starter from AAA to help get you through the week? Do you utilize your bullpen sooner in the next few games to allow your starters to pitch on shorter rest? What about after a 43-minute rain delay? Are you going to bring back your starter who has a one-hitter through 4 and 2/3 innings? These decisions are a part of baseball and are more important than the thickness of the necklace your left fielder is wearing, or what the lighting looks like on the plastic cups scattered about the dugout.

International Free Agents/Posting System

Here is where San Diego Studios could add in a page of International Free Agents, with or without a true posting system.

I'm surprised there isn't something like this in the game already. Even a simple way of adding this would be to generate a small number of international players -- assorted talent levels -- who could enter the free agent market during the offseason. This is something I do manually in my carryover saves, but it would be cool to have it done automatically. If it's not done with a true posting system, then at least implement a posting system with the aforementioned auto-generated free agent.

Expanded Contract Options, Incentives

Cespedes is going to need more guaranteed money to keep up his car collection.

Justin Upton and Yoenis Cespedes both signed very unique contracts during the MLB offseason. Both players have an early opt-out clause they may choose to exercise, or they can elect to have the remaining years (plural) on the deal honored if they so choose. As it stands now, this is not possible in The Show as it seems player/team options only pertain to the final year of a contract.

Incentives would also be a nice way to hook free agents or to keep player morale high. For example, if a player wants to know he'll get a 250K bonus for making the All-Star team, perhaps that motivates him a bit more to have a productive season.

Injured Player Purgatory?

Can I use this guy when he gets hurt during pregame or not?

I really like the concept introduced earlier in this series where a player can get hurt during warm-ups. It's a fun, short-term challenge a manager has to work around. But why is the player still available to enter the game later on? Is he actually healthy enough to play? Is he actually hurt and simply not being identified as unavailable to play? Is he the second coming of Kirk Gibson that could be called upon in a pinch?

Another addition could be something like Madden has where the player tries to talk you in to staying in, but there's a risk of greater injury involved if he does play.

Fix Carryover Saves

While there appears to be fixes on the way soon, there are a number of issues with carryover saves I've already noted on the OS forums:

-GM Goals

-Imported Stats

-Imported Player Origins

-Player Morale

These need to be fixed without adding any new hiccups.

Port Offline Franchise for Online, Manager-Only Improvements

Another fix would be to not let the team that's alphabetically first in the AL or NL East get every tiebreaker in awards, such as this Gold Glover.

Finally, it's truly unfortunate that online franchise is nowhere near its cousin, offline franchise. Franchise mode, regardless of the additions old or new, must be ported to be fully operational whether one is playing offline or online. As for manager-only mode, this style of play deserves its own attention to detail to ensure players of this mode are having a franchise experience that is identical to anyone else -- just without the button mashing. What if 30 guys want to have an online manager-only franchise? They should be able to do so successfully, and any online franchise must be able to carryover to next year's game much like the offline ones.

Honorable Mention: Expansion Mode

Although it may not happen until MLB actually does it first, an expansion mode like the one found in All-Star Baseball would be a superbly immersive addition.

So what do you think? Would these be welcomed additions for franchise mode? What else could enhance franchise mode to bring it into the upper echelon for career-play sports games?

Good article. I understand there might be a roadblock preventing them from adding expansion but how about relocation or at least the ability to transfer a created team with user created uniforms and logos from diamond dynasty into franchise? It seems like a doable thing unless MLB for some odd reason wouldn't permit it.

My biggest issue with franchise this year is odd progression/regression but they have obviously done a lot of work on franchise.

Utilize the graphics engine for quick watchable games. Some of us arm chair GM's don't care for text sims (See Football Manager series). Games should take no longer than 10-15 mins to complete.

Can't have better bullpen logic without relievers represented correctly. They need splits just like hitters have. It's silly that the hitter can be better/worse vs one side or another but pitchers are all uniform. Really hurts lefty specialists.

Blindly matching hand vs hand or "always pull a guy after one inning" is not managing a bullpen. It's more nuanced than that, like many things in baseball.

I don't know if anyone can help me here but I'm a new user and it wont let me post a new thread. I'm trying to set up a 2 person franchise on the same console and running into issues no matter which mode I choose. Offline Franchise mode forces me to play 162 games, that is too many for a no sim player. Offline season mode lets me set a shorter season but doesn't give me the option for an open schedule and takes away almost of of my trade ability with no minor league system. Online franchise would be perfect, it gives me the option to shorten the season, open schedule type so we can play any games in any order without simulating the other players games. I also still have my prospects that I can trade. But for some ******* reason I cant set two user teams on one console. How can there be so many oversights to making playing a 2 person franchise enjoyable?

Does anyone know a workaround in any of these modes to help me find a setup I want? Also SDS really needs to make options that you choose before you start a franchise/season be able to be toggled on or off during the franchise/season.

Biggest things for me are a playable version of single A in which you can have guys do really well and crush it and speed up through the ranks to utilize the new progression system or have guys get injured. A bad injuries can happen and they can be devastating to a career and a team's long term plans. As it stands now players in A ball don't do anything, they just sit there all year unless moved. Also the bullpen AI but I feel that this can be managed if we give personalities to managers and coaching staffs. Some will be old school and want their relievers to pitch regardless of the matchups while some will be all in with the saber metrics era and keep swapping out relievers to give their team the best statistical matchup (in addition to shifting the fielders and calling for suicide squeezes, etc.)

I have a few ideas myself that they can copy off of 2k.

First, is custom draft classes. Memory might be the biggest argument against this but it's worth putting this out there. Having real-life draft prospects, or at least some real-life prospects can take Franchise mode to a whole another level (combine that with the rookie ball you just mentioned).

Second is the injury system. There's already a gripe of not seeing enough injuries in-game on default sliders but something else I want to see is the injury system that 2k has. If MLB The Show can implement the real-life different injuries per body part and their proneness into the game like 2k does, it will be the best Franchise mode of any sports game IMO. I've been playing this game for almost a decade and I don't think that there's much (if any) improvements to the games injury system.

Great ideas...Hopefully we will see continue improvements.

1000000% agree with bringing back the expansion mode. They've obviously set up a detailed uniform creator in Diamond Dynasty, just port that over to franchise mode and load in a couple of pre-set teams to pair with your expansion team to make it an even 32.

Still can't believe that a baseball game from a decade and a half ago is the only console sports game that really nailed the expansion concept.

I'm stunned there's not a post yet lobbying for the ability to set hotdog, rootbeer & t-shirt prices. As for expanding the minors, I wish season mode had two options, One, like it is now (40 man roster) and two, a 50 man roster where you can play AAA games. Then in franchise I wish there was also two options. Again, one like it is now and two, either 100 man rosters and playable Single A ball or 125 man rosters with both classes of A ball. If SDS ever does expand roster size I hope they go from a 7 round draft class to a 20 round draft class.

Begging for an expansion mode! The only thing I wish they could add. Building your own team, expansion draft style would be amazing.

"Perfecting .... Franchise Mode."

Oh, that's easy: stop breaking the damn thing every year. Aging in 14, performance progression in 15, carryover with the morale in 16. Can't wait to see what goes pear shaped next year.

Expansion/relocation mode or at least use the uniform creator in franchise. The tools are already there, they just need to be added to that mode by the dev team. I don't think anyone realistically expects a stadium creator, but being able to relocate or expand with created jerseys is easy.

2K, Madden, NHL all have the ability to create uniforms/expansion/relocate teams in franchise mode. They really need to let us do this.

# 15 krunchybox @ 04/13/16 12:26 AM
What about the ability to build a new stadium?

I want to see a purpose for a pitching coach. Let me have him make visits to the mound.

The catcher should have a relationship trust factor with each pitcher. Since the catcher is an on-field coach, give me the opportunity to send my catcher out to calm the pitcher down.

Have the manager do team meetings during a losing streak or before a big series.

Have the sponsorship money actually work. It did last year but not this year. I bought all diamond cards and should be pulling in a bunch of money per game. At the end of April with two teams in same season and in looking at the budget projections, it shows no income for those cards and no increased money for my budget

Good article. I agree with most of the ideas, though bullpen AI and sim stats would be my top priority. I would also like to be able to import players with CPU Roster Control set to off, or qt least have sim injuries when it is set to ON.

# 17 jada855 @ 04/13/16 04:08 AM
A Injuries 2.0 NBA 2K16 type system would be awesome! Where we could actually see the body part or area affected and that would in turn affect performance.

# 18 Bakermob @ 04/13/16 11:15 AM
I keep begging for an expansion mode. I do t know if you've ever played the sim game Out Of The Park Baseball but they have a great expansion mode. They have player protection and the draft. There is no greater challenge in a franchise mode than creating a team from scratch. NBA 2K has a relocation mode that is pretty cool. I'd love to be able to import logos instead of having to make them. A stadium created would be an awesome addition too. Great article btw....

# 19 Brandwin @ 04/13/16 11:48 AM
Good stuff, Mike.

It's funny you brought up International Free Agents - I was thinking of a system to implement them into franchise. I haven't thought of the best or fair way with 30 team control to do that thought.

Do you create a certain amount and do a roll of the dice to see what teams they end up on? How do you decide on positions to create players, attributes, potential etc...

Would love to hear your ideas on this.

Thanks!

# 20 Godgers12 @ 04/14/16 09:05 AM
I think it would be c ool if you could invite a friend to play against you in an offline franchise. Say your playing the NYY or Red Sox and don't feel like playing the CPU, just invite a friend and play them instead.
