Weekend News Roundup: Conflicting Reviews Edition

It was a light weekend of news -- that is if you weren't at DSM -- so this will be a short, concise and of course educational news roundup. In this version of the roundup NBA 2K8, NBA 08, NBA Live 08, Pro Evolution 2008, FIFA 08 and Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 are covered.

At this point DSM is almost tired of covering NBA Live 08, but nonetheless new content just keeps emerging. Gamespot finished posting the videos showing off the top 5 players at each position on Friday. At DSM we did our own variation of top players in the form of our DSM All NBA-Live Team. Once again don't forget DSM's review for NBA Live 08 will be up on Tuesday.

Also releasing on Tuesday is NBA 2K8. Visual Concept's premiere game addition this year is the Slam Dunk contest. IGN has a preview up explaining how the competition will work. Essentially it seems like the game mechanics of the contest itself are rather different than how Live does its own dunk contest. Also players can choose to incorporate various objects as props in their dunks, including cars. To see the new mode in motion check out the videos IGN posted along with the preview.

Players not interested in the new dunk contest may find something that just concluded on Friday at Gametap more interesting. Jon Robinson finished up his four part Association Mode report. In the four part feature Robinson takes his Warriors through the Association Mode, culminating in a championship for the Golden State squad in year two. The feature highlights most of the new additions to the Association Mode, including player personalities, and overall does a very good job at painting a picture of just how much NBA 2K has improved over one year -- which is saying a lot considering how good the game already was last year.

Finally for those hoops fans out there that are only interested in Sony's basketball franchise, NBA 08 reviews have begun to pop up on the Internet. IGN gave the game a 7.5 while Gamespot gave the game a 5.0. There seems to be some dissension among the ranks, so it's probably best to play the demo on PSN and wait for more reviews before judging whether the game is worth a look or not. NBA 08 also releases this Tuesday.

WWE fans only have another month and a half to wait before the next installment of the Smackdown vs. Raw series reaches store shelves. Since the game is inching ever closer to release THQ Senior Creative Manager Cory Ledesma took some time to answer questions from IGN's readers. One question and answer shed some light on the possible release of the Smackdown vs. Raw 2008 demo:

Will there be a demo for the 360 this year too?

-- Moose205

Ledesma: Absolutely there's a demo! Keep an eye out for it in the next couple of weeks.

Speaking of waiting, FIFA 08 fans have one final week to wait before EA Sports's next soccer/football game launches. GameTrailers posted a very positive video review of the game, giving the game an 8.8. In addition to the next generation FIFA 08 review, GT posted a trailer showcasing the features exclusive to the Nintendo Wii version of FIFA 08.

Sony fans -- at least in France -- waiting for Pro Evolution 2008, and not FIFA, 08 will have a chance to buy a PS3 packaged with Pro Evolution come this November, which just happens to be the time Pro Evolution comes out. It's unclear if the offer will come to the rest of Europe. Pro Evolution 2008 won't release in North America until right around the start of Spring.
