Why I love Madden NFL 16's Connected Franchise

Most modes in the world of sports video games have seemingly gravitated towards being online, and in most cases, rightfully so. The days of getting together and playing cards until the wee hours of the morning is slowly fading away. It's now being replaced by people hanging in an online party playing games together until those same late hours. The reasons are simple, and honestly, not that hard to understand. It’s much easier for us as gamers to connect to friends that are spread across the country rather than trying to get together all in one place, at the same time.

With that in mind, there are some great online modes in the sports genre these days, and Madden 16 is no different. While Madden offers multiple online modes, the one that seems to occupy almost all of my time is the connected online franchise mode, and the word 'occupy' may not be a strong enough word.

I am currently involved in a full 32-team CFM with Madden 16, and while the games obviously take center stage, what is so great about this mode is what takes place behind the scenes. All of us use a social chat app so that we are connected literally almost every minute of the day. While I may not know every single one of these men or have met them all in real life, I have met many of them. When we are not using choice words and phrases to discuss the lack of skills that some seem not to possess, we are creating fictional trade scenarios, looking at future games, possible playoff scenarios, and much more (some of which cannot be mentioned).

On top of using the social app, we also utilize an online website called DaddyLeagues.com that allows us all to jump online, look at stats, look at standings, box scores and advance the league at any given time. Now of course most of this information can be found in-game, or even on the website that EA provides for all of its online connected franchises -- to be honest, it doesn’t matter what your approach is as it all works. With Madden 15 we made it through seven seasons, and played it up until the week of Madden 16's release. We will most likely do the same with this year’s iteration.

On top of all the games, the trade chatter, playoff scenarios and basic shenanigans, we also have the draft and the offseason moves. I am here to say that doing a live 32-person draft online is some of the best times I have ever experienced. We have guys that have spreadsheets, databases and much more in regards to readying themselves for the chance to make their team better.

As with any online league, the more people you have, the better it is. It’s incumbent on the league GM to find the right type of people that mesh well together. While there are some great times to be had, there are also some heated moments that, if not handled properly, can literally destroy a league from within. There has to be mutual respect, not only for the other players in the league, but for the game itself. Our league utilizes a set of rules, but we mostly rely on our league members to not take advantage of the shortcomings of the game while treating each other with respect. Although that may be hard task to accomplish, I would say it’s almost a must if you want to have any type of longevity and continuity in regards to your online league.

So while the Madden franchise -- and CFM as a mode in general -- has some areas it still needs to clean up, what the developers have given the community in terms of connectivity is actually quite amazing. It may be fashionable to knock EA for the issues that some of their games possess, but the developers have also given the community the ability the come together and do something that would have seemed straight out of a science fiction movie when I first started gaming 20 years ago.

In short, I highly suggest you try to find a good online league and throw yourself into it -- it truly is a game changer.

How has your online CFM experience gone so far with Madden 16?

That's why you have to have 32 owners who you know and trust. I do one with 12 owners, (also my fantasy football league). We play our games every Saturday and Sunday and we never have any issues. We usually can play 2 full seasons over the course of one NFL season. And we set aside an entire Saturday for the offseason/draft. It has worked out perfectly the past few years. The only online league I ever play in in any game because we have known each other for years and with us being spread out across the country its the best way to keep in touch.

You need to start the season in preseason if you don't want the cpu to decide who to cut

Ummm...I disagree?

We have a 72-hour advance schedule so you get 3 days to play a game. We're already in week 5 of season 2.

Get more reliable members?

Did you ever use a 48 hour schedule? I've been debating moving my league to 72 but fear that if you give someone an inch...they'll take 100 yards.

Last year we were able to get to season 9, but we are in week 9 of season 2 on our current schedule. Comforting to know that on a 72 hour you are just as close.

We'll have moments where we get a couple quick advances and think "48 hours would be awesome!" and then we pitch the idea and several like "nahhhhhhhhhh we're good".

I would love to but the 72 hours works great and is the most fair. Plus when we advance in under 48 hours we'll move the next advance up a day.

Connected franchise is by far the worst career mode out of any sports video game. It lacks two huge things, and that is depth and customization!

I have done a league with 25 plus guys and had a great experience. We did a weekly radio show using blog talk radio you get the first half hour free. Daddy league was great for writing storylines. We linked the twitter feed to a create fake twitter account . We watched each games on twitch tv. Also create a Facebook group which ea would automatically post to group but ea stopped that feature. Group me app was good to. Also used bbm channel . So we kept everyone connected to say the least.

Anyone looking for a great long term online league, shoot me a message!

I hate the new XP system. I actually enjoyed the random plus and minus to the stats that were based on production and potential alone. Perhaps that is just me though.

This is the truth of the matter above ^ . Those who have found it impossible to get people to schedule games in a 32 man league , have been in leagues with crappy commish's who dont know how to handle things.

We have had a 32 man league since madden 12. It works well. I dont personally know any of those guys, well i didnt before we started. Have had some leave and new come in , we keep it moving. It comes down to commish setting a rule on it, and enforcing it . If guys want to get their games in they will schedule times , and if they dont , they get removed and replaced with someone who will.

In our league , we have 72 hour Max advance period, however, our system is set up, where at least one team from each game must post their set time in our shoutbox. We always know at the least of 12 hours ahead of next advance , what time it will be. So we have a rule that requires communication about next weeks game must happen before advance. We allow up to 12 hours after advance to have either a set time posted, or let league know the two are still trying to figure out a time and will update soon. That means normally people have over 24 hours to get in touch with each other and figure out a time. If communication isnt done before advance, and they cant start before the lastest game time that was posted, they get simmed. If one guy texts opponent before advance and opponent slacks and doesnt get back to him before 12 hours after advance, the one who texted before advance gets a sim win. This gives people incentive to keep up with whats going on , and to communicate quickly. If they miss two week due to lack of communication, they are removed and really need to be in an offline league.

It can be done, we have guys on the east & west coasts, middle of the country and even Hawaii. It works, if the people in the league truely like CFM and want to be able to play in a well organized one.Often times, if you find yourself in a league that is not being managed well by commish and admins, like not enforcing some communication rules, you might as well not join or leave it because its going to fail. When your dealing with 32 dif people, with dif schedules and in different timezones, it has to be structured and organized or it will never work . 1 it takes dedicated owners who love the mode, 2 it takes commish and admins who enforce rules , and enforce communication.

One thing many dont understand if they have never run one. It takes alot of work and dedication from a commish to keep a league moving and going , while keeping it fair for all and dealing with 31 other personalities and managing them.Which is why many leagues fail, people think its easy and not much to it other than playing games, then they start one up and try it, and find out , alot is demanded of you as a commish , if you want to keep it going. Normally if a league lasts 4-5 seasons, then its probably a good chance its a fine league. Those first 1-3 years is what will really test a commish and his own dedication to making it work, figuring out what works best, and keep it moving. Once you pass that threshold , then its like anything else in life, you know what your doing now, know what to expect and can plan around it well.

The 32 man leagues are great if you find one with a good commish and admins not set out to bend everything so they can be the ones winning superbowls.DaddyLeagues hosts a ton of leagues on xbox 1,xbox 360, PS3, PS4 you can find one there pretty easy, they even have an area for people to search for leagues that has post openings to their leagues. DaddyLeagues is an awesome site, run by 1 guy on the side. He does an amazing job with it, better than EA can even have done with their own CFM website( which i think they may have forget they even have ). It really adds alot to online leagues in so many ways. There is an awesome Xbox1 league called MBL there, if you have never checked them out, i suggest you do and see what a 32 man league full of dedicated owners can really achieve. While most dont get into that much detail ,its cool to see what those guys are doing with it.
