Weekend News Roundup: TGS Mop Up Edition

DSM covered most of the happenings from TGS in the latest Weekly News Roundup, yet more news, previews, videos and images crept across the Pacific and onto the Internet this weekend. So this weekend edition the News Roundup will cover the leftovers from TGS, which includes some wrestling, racing,  boxing, hockey, socccer, and a wole lot of golf. Check it all out after the jump.

Let's start with some coverage that didn't come from the East, and that is the recent WWE Smackdown! vs. Raw 2008 information. GamesRadar revealed all the primary and secondary abilities that would be in the latest THQ wrestling game when it releases this fall.

The abilities system is new to Smackdown this year, and within the GamesRadar article they explain how the primary and secondary abilities work.

"Here’s how you do it: every time you select a wrestler, you choose a primary fighting style such as Powerhouse or High-Flyer and a secondary fighting style. When your momentum meter is full, you can either execute a finishing move at that time or store a fighting style icon, which can then be used to perform the primary ability. The primary style allows you to use all of that style’s abilities, while the secondary style only provides access to that style’s secondary abilities."

The abilities feature is unlike anything found in the franchise before because now when the user chooses to be a brawler, or dirty, or a high flyer it means something.

Also for those interested in seeing some footage of the game, check out IGN's latest Friday Fight. This week the videos showcase CM Punk and Rey Mysterio in an ECW Extreme Rules Match.

Now if wrasslin' isn't your thing, maybe another form of high impact, fast paced action is right up your alley. GameTrailers posted the latest official NHL 08 video that highlights the players who switched teams this off-season. If you watch the video you'll see players like Chris Drury and Daniel Briere sporting their new uniforms.

By the way, if you didn't already know, DSM thinks rather highly of the NHL 08 this year, and if you want to win a copy of NHL 08 then just check out the contest DSM is running.

For the handheld fans out there, Victorious Boxers Portable for the PSP, Hot Shots Golf 2 for the PSP, and Pro Evolution 2008 for the DS received some additional coverage at TGS. GameTrailers has a video of the handheld boxing title, while Gamespot has hands-on with the PSP golf title, and the DS soccer title.

Forza 2 fans also received some new content for their favorite 360 simulation racing game this weekend. Two pieces of DLC were made available this weekend, one that was free, and another that cost 400 points ($5). The free download was for a 2007 SEAT Leon Cupra, and the 400 point download was for a 10-pack of cars.

1UP lists them as follows:

  • 2006 Audi R10 (#8 Audi Sport Team Joest) Prototype
  • 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Hemi
  • 2006 Dodge Challenger Concept
  • 2006 Honda Civic Si Coupe
  • 2007 Honda Civic Type-R
  • 1967 Lamborghini Miura P400
  • 2006 Lamborghini Miura Concept
  • 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 RS (997)
  • 2007 Saturn Sky Red Line
  • 2007 SEAT Leon Supercup

Unsurprisingly at TGS some companies were looking to target the Wii Sports crowd, specifically Hudson Soft with their game, Deca Sporta. Gamespot's hands-on with the game was in the latest Weekly News Roundup, but now there is media to go with the impressions. Gamespot has posted three videos, and GameTrailers has posted three videos as well. The videos highlight such sports as archery, snowboarding and badminton.

It's also worth noting how much Hudson Soft may be banking on this game when it releases. Gamespot pointed out how much of Hudson Soft's booth was dedicated to Deca Sporta.

"The upcoming Deca Sporta for the Nintendo Wii took up more than 60 percent of the stand, with demo Wii units spread out over two levels."

Two other Wii games received additional coverage over the weekend at TGS, Super Swing Golf: Season 2 and We Love Golf! DSM already covered a lot of what was said about We Love Golf! in our Weekly News Roundup, specifically the hands-on Wired's Chris Kohler posted, but more hands-on impressions and an interesting note about one of the game's producers emerged this weekend.  Shacknews posted the less than positive hands-on of Capcom's We Love Golf! while Kotaku discovered Producer Hironobu Takeshita may not even love golf.

"Finishing up, I thought a bit of light conversation would be in order. So the topic moved to golf. Like, real golf. Then something strange happened. I asked if he played golf, and if so, how often. His answer? "I'd like to one day". One day? What, when you're done making a golf game? Kinda odd"

Kotaku also posted their hands-on with Super Swing Golf: Season 2.

Finally, wrapping up the TGS coverage until next year was the additional FIFA 08 and Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 content. European fans were able to get their hands on a demo of PES 2008 (sorry North America). CVG also posted their hands-on with PES 2008, while Gamespot posted four new gameplay videos of PES 2008, and GameTrailers posted three new gameplay videos.

The FIFA 08 fans will have to settle for a bit less coverage. QJ.net posted 44 new screenshots from the Wii version of FIFA 08.

Check back next Friday for the next installment of the Weekly News Roundup. In the mean time enjoy the rest of the content on DSM.com and to stay up to date on the latest news check out our Sports Gaming Central section.
