News Roundup: Bad Patches, NCAA Challenge and More

The Tokyo Game Show is consuming the gaming industry this week, but while most gamers are consumed by the latest Metal Gear Solid information, we here at DSM always have sports on our mind. So without further delay, it's time to get to the big news bits from the week of September 17.

The biggest story of the week for most sports gamers, at least on the PS3, is the Madden NFL 08 patch debacle. Earlier this week EA released a patch on the PS3 that was essentially crashing the game, but that pesky 80009 error has now been quelled though due to the second Madden PS3 patch being released. However, don't forget to remove the first buggy patch, otherwise your game will still get that marvelous 80009 error.

In related EA football news, the EA Madden Challenge is no longer the only football gaming competition around, the NCAA Football Challenge is joining the club. It's going to be handled differently than the Madden Challenge though. Rather than just having tournaments, EA will instead be traveling to various college campuses (which began yesterday at USC).

"The college campus tournaments will determine who qualifies for the finals at the Rose Bowl for a chance to win the $10,000 Grand Prize. The first day will be Campus Tournaments where competition will only be open to students. Game day events will be open to students and fans, and will include several different competitions including:

· Series of three mini competitions throughout the day

· Longest Field Goal competition

· Option Dash (two minute drill) competition

· Mini eight-man tournament competition"

A few NBA demos also released this week -- NBA 2K8 from 2K Sports and NBA 08 from Sony Computer Entertainment. GameTrailers posted some footage from the NBA 2K8 demo, so if you don't have a XBOX 360 or you don't have an Internet connection, the GT video is the next best thing. Don't forget, both games are releasing in the very near future -- NBA 08 on September 25th, and NBA 2K8 on October 2nd -- so it's time to get some game time in before having to make a buying decision in the following weeks.

The third hoops game, NBA Live 08, also made its rounds this week in video form. IGN posted the latest Live 08 official trailer, and GameTrailers has posted another NBA Live 08 video feature. The official Live trailer highlights the increasing Euro influence in the NBA today. The GT video feature is another in the line of canned and corny, but still interesting videos that highlight how Live has changed between 07 and 08. It's the second video in the three part series, and in episode 2 the Bring it Home champion, Jordan faces off against one of the creators of NBA Live 08.

Now, to cover TGS as fully as possible, a linkfest will now commence.

Soccer fans have been blessed with a whole bunch of Winning Eleven/Pro Evo and FIFA information during TGS. Kotaku, IGN, and Gamespot have posted updated Pro Evo impressions. Also Gamespot posted the newest official trailer for Pro Evo. On the FIFA side of things, Gamespot has posted the latest FIFA 08 official trailer, which highlights the Be A Pro mode.

Golf fans have also been given a bundle of news this week due to TGS. IGN posted three new screenshots for Hot Shots Golf Portable 2 for the PSP. Gamespot has posted a hands-on for Hot Shots Golf 5 for the PS3. Another golf game releasing sometime in 2008 has also received plenty of coverage at TGS -- We Love Golf! We Love Golf! is a golf game coming to the Wii and being made by Capcom. The game itself seems to be more in the Mario Golf mold. Gamespotalso posted a gameplay movie, and Wired's Game Life blog and Gamespot posted impressions of We Love Golf!

The final two sports games that have received considerable coverage during TGS are Deca Sporta, a mini-game sports collection for the Wii, and  Go! Sports Ski an over the top skiing title for the PS3. A trailer was posted for Go! Sports Ski at GameTrailers, and Gamespot posted a hands-on and official trailer for Deca Sporta.

Don't forget to check back on Monday for the Weekend Roundup, since as always, a few news bits will sneak through the cracks, and DSM will be there to write about them.
