For those who may not know, Diamond Dynasty is Sony San Diego’s entry into the collectible card game mode akin to that of EA Sports’ Ultimate Team and 2K Sports’ My Team. While Diamond Dynasty has been around since MLB 12, this year the mode has been almost entirely revamped to be more user friendly.
Hopefully this little tour gives you all the information you need to get started playing Diamond Dynasty. We’ll go through each menu item to help get you acclimated with the mode and be able to quickly navigate through it.
Play Ball
Here you’ll find the three gameplay modes in Diamond Dynasty:
- Head To Head – play online against another user and their Diamond Dynasty Team
- Play vs CPU – play a CPU controlled MLB team
- Extra Innings – play against another user’s Diamond Dynasty team controlled by the CPU.
Upon completing games you will receive Stubs (Diamond Dynasty’s currency) as well as a card. In “vs. CPU” and “Extra Innings”, you can have a better chance at winning a higher rated card by playing the CPU at higher difficulties.
My Squad
Here you’ll be able to add cards to your 25-man roster, setup your starting lineup, and create your Dynasty Player. He is a custom player that can be set to play at any position on the field. The catch? His attributes are upgraded by “feeding” him other cards from your Collection.
Diamond Dynasty cards are broken down into 6 categories; Common, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond and Legends. There is a chance there will be more added later, but as of now, those are the only 5. Upon starting out, you’ll be given a fairly low quality roster that you can use to play games, to earn coins and new cards to build up your team. The initial cards that you get cannot be sold, however, they can be used to feed your Dynasty Player.
Marketplace
This is where you’ll make the moves to improve your team. There are two sections here, Card Pack Store and Community Market. In the Card Pack Store you can purchase packs of cards with Stubs. There are three types of packs.
- Standard Pack – comes with 6 player cards and 2 items.
- Position Player Pack – comes with 6 position players and 2 items.
- Pitchers Pack – comes with 6 pitchers and 2 items.
Each of these packs costs 1,000 Stubs. If you go into the Card Pack Store and press Circle, you’ll be brought to a menu where you can purchase Stubs with money. You can buy Stubs in 5 difference pack sizes:
- 1,000 for $0.99
- 5,500 for $4.99
- 12,000 for $9.99
- 27,000 for $19.99
- 75,000 for $49.99
The Community Market is where you can buy players, equipment, stadiums and sponsorships (for use in Franchise). Unlike the auction system from Ultimate Team, Diamond Dynasty has Buy and Sell Orders for cards. So rather than bidding on a card and having a bidding war ensue, you can say “I’m willing to pay XXX Stubs for a certain card” and a seller can come in, see your Buy Order, and agree to it. Otherwise, they can create a Sell Order and set their own price.
Customize
This one is pretty straight forward, this is where you’ll set your Team Name and Details, as well as create logos and customize your uniforms. If you don’t have the patience to create a logo, there is also a Logo Vault where you can download other users created logos for use on your team.
Card Collection
In the Card Collection menu you’ll see your current progress toward the Collections in Diamond Dynasty. Each team has a collection from 31 to 40 cards. If you complete the collection by having one card of each player within the collection, you’ll be able to unlock a Legend from that team’s past. Along with the Legend, you’ll also get a 5% bonus towards earning XP, Stubs and items.
The catch to the Legend collections is that once you complete a set and unlock the Legend, you’ll no longer be able to sell any of the cards that were used for the collection. Also the Legend is unsellable. These cards are still be available to be fed to your Dynasty Player.
There is also a collection of the 66 stadiums. That gives you the same 5% bonus, but there is no Legendary Stadium or anything that gets unlocked.
The Card Pack Management screen is where you will find your unopened card packs that you’ve purchased, or earned via the Daily Stamps. The Daily Stamp system is pretty easy to understand. Each day you log into The Show you’ll earn a stamp. After nine stamps, you’ll get a free pack of cards.
Hopefully this walkthrough has given you the knowledge you need to go jump into this year’s version of Diamond Dynasty with a little bit of confidence. If you have any more questions about Diamond Dynasty, please leave them in the comments below.
