Sometimes the luck just isn't with your franchise.
In our last article we talked about moves that we think will have a true positive impact for the respective team in the upcoming 2015 NFL season. As with every subject though, there is always a counterpoint. Here are some of the moves that not only have us questioning the front office of some of these NFL teams, but we are sure the majority of their fan base is doing the same.
Teams that Took a step back.
New England Patriots
Far be it from me to take a stab at one of the most consistent NFL franchises over the last decade, but when you lose the likes of Vince Wilfork, Darrelle Revis, Shane Vareen, Akeem Ayers, and Brandon Browner in one off-season, it’s hard to imagine your team will be better in the following season. We understand the mysterious hooded one is the best at plug and play on the NFL gridiron, but there will be a lot of talented personnel missing when training camp opens later this summer.
San Franciso 49ers
Remember when 49er fans biggest concern was who will replace Jim Harbaugh? We bet they don’t either. One would have to go back a long way to find the type of mass exodus that we have witnessed over the last two weeks in San Francisco. Not only did they show Harbaugh the door, they watched one of the best linebackers in the game, Patrick Willis, make the decision to retire – at 30 years old no less. They also watched another face of the franchise player, Frank Gore, sign with the Colts, defensive linemen Justin Smith retire, wide receiver Michael Crabtree leave for free agency, and guard Mike Iupati, just 27, leave and sign with the Arizona Cardinals.
Detroit Lions
The Lions lost a pair of defensive talents in both Ndamukong Suh to the Dolphins, and his supposed replacement, Nick Fairley (Rams). They released Reggie Bush (49ers), probably for the better. Bush being released isn’t huge deal, but does diminish their offensive options a bit, and the two losses on defense will most likely really have a large impact in 2015. The Lions did land Haloti Ngata in a trade with the Ravens. Not only is this a huge hot on the salary cap for the Lions for 2015, Ngata is only signed for one more year.
Other moves we struggle to understand
We tried to find something we liked about what the Saints did in trading one of the premier tight ends in the game, Jimmy Graham, to the Seahawks, and trading wide receiver Kenny Stills to Dolphins, but we couldn't. Both of these moves seem like odd choices when you have quarterback, albeit a future hall of famer, who is now 36 years old and not exactly is a position for a offensive revamp. Along with the Saints, we are not fans of what the Browns did either. You lose Jordan Cameron, which hurts even more with the loss of Josh Gordon, and you bring in Josh McCown, and Brian Hartline. To be fair though, they did change their colors from orange to darker orange, so there’s that.
The Team To Be Determined
Philadelphia Eagles
If there was an award for team transformation and re-identification, Chip Kelly and the Eagles would win this award going away. Trading away LeSean McCoy for Kiko Alonso, trading for Sam Bradford, the signings of DeMarco Murray, Ryan Matthews, and Bryon Maxwell, and watching Jeremy Maclin sign with the Chiefs. We don’t pretend to know quite yet if these moves are actual improvements, or simply just moves. The Eagles will most definitely be one of the more interesting teams to watch in 2015, as there will no shortage of drama and story lines, this we can say for sure. None of this even includes the 2015 NFL Draft, which we are sure that Kelly and Co. have something up their sleeves – Marcus Mariota anyone?
These are just some of the moves that teams made in the free agency and acquisition period of 2015, but there are so many more. It truly is one of the craziest and more memorable ones that come to mind, and it’s not over yet. What about your favorite team,? Did they fill their needs, or just create more?
