Now appearing in Miami.
Watching the NFL free agency period play out in 2015, I find myself wanting to equate it to the trading and free agency system in Madden 15, by EA Sports. If members of an online CFM tried to pull these trade tactics, they would either be mocked endlessly, or flat out banned from the league. With that said though, just as in any given NFL free agency period, there were some clear winners, clear losers, and moves that just flat out made no sense.
Teams that owned Free Agency 2015
Miami Dolphins
Love him or hate him, securing the talents of Ndamukong Suh can only make your team better, and that’s exactly what the Dolphins did. Signing the former Lion to a record setting six year, $114 million deal, and adding one of the premier defensive talents in the league to a defensive squad that already was solid to begin with. The Dolphins didn’t stop there, as they also added immensely talented tight end and former Brown, Jordan Cameron. It’s no secret that Cameron has dealt with concussion issues that has hampered his ability to be on the field, but when healthy, the young man out of USC (and BYU) adds a nice target for Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the acquisition of former Saints wide-out, Kenny Stills. While there may be a maturity issue that needs to be corrected, there is no denying the ability he brings to the table.
Indianapolis Colts
While some will say that adding aging free agents Frank Gore and Andre Johnson are at best band-aids, we argue that both moves are an upgrade over what they did have. We understand that it’s not 2011, and they are not getting the Frank Gore that ran for over 1,200 yards, or the Andre Johnson that caught 112 balls for almost 1,600 yards in 2012, but they are both still capable of balancing the offensive attack. Not only do we like both of these moves, the Colts also helped solidify their defense with the signings of former Eagles linebacker, Trent Cole, and former Rams defensive tackle, Kendall Langford.
Arizona Cardinals
There is no denying that losing a talent like Antonio Cromartie is hard to deal with, but that is exactly what the Cardinals did. Instead of feeling sorry for themselves, they took matters into their own hands and did something about it. They addressed the Paul Fanaika to free agency move, by signing former 49ers guard Mike Iupati, signed line backers Sean Witherspoon and LaMar Woodley to bolster depth at that postion, and added defensive linemen Corey Peters and Corey Redding. Less we forget that they also extended wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. That folks is what we call a solid free agency period.
Other Moves Which Were Positive
Obviously there were a lot more teams that made moves that we liked other than just the Colts, Cardinals and Dolphins. The Jets would be one of them. Basically with the signing of Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie, the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets basically purchased themselves a new secondary, and also added talented, but often troubled wide receiver, Brandon Marshall. We are not sure these moves make them a serious contender in 2015, but they are much closer now than before.
We also like what the Bears did in signing defensive end Pernell McPhee, safety Antrel Rolle, and wide receiver Eddie Royal. Don't forget about the Packers, as they found a way to keep Randall Cobb and Bryan Bulaga in Green Bay, as both easily could have found more lucrative deals on the market.
In our next article we will talk about some the moves that NFL teams made, or didn’t make, that have to leave their fan base scratching their heads. What were some of the moves NFL teams made that you loved?
