MLB The Show: Corey Kluber's Cy Young Performance Boosted His Ratings

Winning the Cy Young award is the most coveted accolade a pitcher could strive for. Clayton Kershaw, the 2014 N.L. winner, sports a 99 as you would expect from the "best." But what about the A.L. Cy Young award winner Corey Kluber? In MLB 14 The Show, Kluber's rating was a 76. His rating this year got a generous bump to a 90. While this is a great rating, you have to ask yourself if the 90 rating is high enough.

There are 10 pitchers rated higher than Corey Kluber in the game this year. Is that really fair to the supposed “best” pitcher in the American League? Sure, you can argue that last year was his break-out year and there isn’t enough history to warrant a higher rating, but should 10 pitchers be rated higher?

A 14-point jump in his overall rating might be one of the biggest ever in the game. Which is great. But when you’re the standard of pitching in the American League according to the Cy Young award voters, wouldn’t you think his overall rating would be higher than a 90? Perhaps I’m being too generous, or even too greedy. Perhaps I’m letting my fandom get in the way of thinking critically about this, but I think his rating should be between a 93-95. This way you are leaving less of a gap between Kluber and his positional counterparts.

Of course when you compare Kluber to Kershaw, Kershaw is the much better pitcher. He will probably go down as one of the best of our generation. Kluber on the other hand is not even a household name (but could become one). He needs to put together another Cy Young award winning year for that to happen.

Is Corey Kluber’s overall rating justified, or should the Cy Young winners rating be higher?

This game is broken and unplayable until Kluber gets that 99 OVR; basically it's just a port of '14 or a roster update at best.*

*Note that this is just me trying to fit all of everyone's favorite buzz words into the same sentence and does not reflect my actual opinion on the matter.

Best pitcher in the AL in 2014, that's debatable, though I can go with it.
Best pitcher in the AL, no qualifier? I'm going with King Felix #1
#2 David Price
#3 Chris Sale
#4 Kluber
#5 Yu Darvish (when healthy, lol there's a qualifier after all)

Here;s another qualifier: If Max Scherzer was still a Tiger, then I'd have him 3rd or 4th.
Verlander could easily have been in my top 5.

You list officially became invalid after mentioning Verlander at all.

Last 3 years he is 18th in ERA, 8th in FIP, 13th in K/9, 36th in BB/9, 7th in HR/9, The only stat that says he should be top 5 is WAR and thats just because he had 7 in 2012. His 3.99 ERA the last 2 years is 32nd among qualified pitchers. He was top(bottom) 5 in something last year though. 5th worst ERA.

Yeah, he's had a rough couple years, but I'm hoping he's ready for a comeback this year.

really depends because who are the 10 rated above him i assume are king felix herndez, kershaw, madison bum(should recive just as generas as of a boost),chris sale(maybe),max sherezer, david price, john lester(?),wanio, wanna say johnny cueto, and i dont know a tenth thats probley some good company all of which have been good pitchers in the past and have won and or came in second in cy voting so 90 is decent ecspilly for a jump the show series isnt one of those games that likes to give people giant leaps in rating so that was generous

This just begs the question, Why is baseball of all sports games converting to this numerical rating crap in the first place. We shouldn't be doing this argument over Kluber imo, I just want to play not decipher this overall rating formula which can change month to month nearly.

I honestly felt this was an honest rating of Kluber. One more year of top-tier pitching and he will be 93-95 but I don't know if he exceeds that.

Shhh...don't bring this up the performance progression thread.
Guys are ready to commit suicide in there because Mike Trout and others didn't propel into the galaxy after good years.

He was certainly stellar last night and made the Cardinals look really, really bad but just like it takes more than one year to arrive at a rating in this game it also takes more than one game to convince us that he is back to his Cy Young form.

# 33 cardinalbird5 @ 05/14/15 12:11 PM
His metrics are good. It doesnt help getting no run support and having a terrible defense behind him.

# 34 Will I Am @ 05/14/15 12:18 PM
Why did the Indians pull Kluber when he had a chance at history? He had only thrown 115 pitches I think.

Last night we scored 2 again.
plus 5.00 ERA prior to last night is not good

ERA doesnt mean much when you got the Indians defense behind you.

His lob pct and babip will regress to the mean and his ERA will be fine.

Baseball's a funny game, full of streaks & slumps. Wouldn;t be much of a reach for someone to trollbump the thread & reignite the flame.
