College Hoops 2K15: What Could Have Been

It's Champion Week. Selection Sunday is almost here.

College basketball fans everywhere are about to begin experiencing the phenomenon that is March Madness once again.

For sports gamers, this time of year used to be prime-time for the latest NCAA Basketball or College Hoops title. Unfortunately, a college basketball game has not existed since NCAA Basketball 10. Sure, you can play NBA 2K15 until your thumbs fall off, but the NBA game just is not the same as NCAA hoops. The modding community has released several impressive mods for 2K in recent years that add in college teams, jerseys, courts, players, etc., but there just is not a way to capture true college basketball in an NBA game.

The lack of a college basketball game is disappointing to say the least. We have already seen what is possible on the new consoles, and having a college basketball title on the Playstation 4 and Xbox One is likely something that would have college basketball fans chomping at the bit to play.
Since there currently is no hope for a college basketball game any time in the near future, I can’t help but think what could have been with College Hoops 2k15.

Presentation
Presentation would likely be one of the strongest points in a new college basketball video game. The presentation in NCAA Basketball 10 was incredible for its time. With ESPN and CBS scoreboards, graphics, and network-specific commentators, this game had a presentation package that was almost as realistic as it could get. Today, the EA Sports rival, 2K sports has put together a great presentation in NBA 2K15. The game features a pre-game show featuring Shaq and Ernie Johnson, great commentary (even though it has become somewhat repetitive), graphics for stats/standings, and sideline interviews with some of the best players in the league. There certainly are not any promises that a college basketball title would have presentation that is quite as impressive, but with the strides that have been made by basketball titles it is safe to say that a new college basketball game would have an impressive broadcast.

Updates
It is obvious that in-game updates in a college basketball game today would be incredible. Of course, roster updates by 2K would likely be illegal, but that doesn’t mean that we wouldn’t get uniform, court and tuning updates promptly. This is another aspect that 2K excels in, as users get updates just nearly every day. With the uniforms that both Nike and Adidas pump out for the schools they endorse, updates to include these uniforms would be a major improvement to the user experience of the game. On top of that, updates to include neutral-site arenas and courts would add another level of realism that college basketball fans would love to play.

Graphics
It goes without saying that a college hoops game on new consoles would be visually stunning. 2K has done a great job graphically with their first two titles on the new generation, and a college basketball game would more than likely be the same. Of course, the players’ faces wouldn’t be all that accurate, but we would still get beautiful jerseys, floors, baskets,
basketballs, fans, and much more. And with some decent athlete customization options, the roster gurus here at OS would be able to provide us with accurate player looks as well. Graphically, this game would be right up there with today’s NBA games, and would be a significant improvement from the most recent (and unfortunately now outdated) NCAA games.

Game Modes
This is a part of the game that 2K has never lacked in, and certainly would not lack in now. College Hoops 2K8 delivered arguably the greatest game mode in sports video game history with Legacy Mode. It was about as deep as a gaming experience could get, and it was way ahead of its time. Today, 2K would only improve on that game mode. MyGM made huge strides from 2K14 to 2K15, and it is likely that they would have done the same in College Hoops 2K15 and only built on a game mode that would still be incredible if it were released in a game today.

Gameplay
Sure, presentation, updates, game modes and graphics are important in a basketball game. However, the bread and butter of the game would still be gameplay. To me, this would be the biggest question mark in the game. NBA 2K15 delivers very impressive gameplay, but the college game is different. 2K’s last stab at a college game was a great basketball game on the court, especially for its time. It would be intriguing to see if they could alter its already great gameplay to fit the college game, and include things such as crowd noise to alter the performance of players on the court. A college basketball game just is not complete if the Cameron Crazies aren’t throwing off a UNC player trying to sink last-second free throws.

College Hoops 2K15 would have been a gem, and a must-buy for basketball fans. It would have featured many of the great features that the latest NBA 2K title has, and it likely would have been unique to the college game. Unfortunately, sports gamers are left again with an “if only” moment. NBA 2K15 is great, but it does not get the job done when it comes to having a bad case of March Madness.

I played well over a hundred games of 2k8 and while it was great for its time it was time to retire it and sell it on Amazon. The gameplay felt primitive, aged graphics , uniforms out of date, teams stuck in conferences from 2007, etc. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game to death and have no doubt it is a classic but let's not pretend this game is like the Tecmo Super Bowl of Xbox 360. The game has its charms but so does the next thing I am describing.

So how do I get my fix for Choops? Buy a copy of NBA 2k14 on Steam and download the mods. Plays great with my wireless 360 controller and runs off of the 2k14 engine. Scroll through the below thread and see what I am talking about. Downloading and installing it is easy and I could assist anyone in doing so.

Rosters for the March Madness tournament are available with so many goodies including courts for Conference tournaments from this past week, up to date jerseys, rosters, and coach profiles. Just about 40+ teams are available with many being updated/modded

College Hoops was a great game but I moved on once I downloaded this mod. The community will likely keep it moving for next season too.

My hope has died for another college sports title. The first problem is player compensation - or lack thereof - for likeness usage. The second problem is (or was) the NCAA getting greedy for the use of their license. That cost alone essentially priced 2K out of the college hoops market. The third problem now is conferences receiving autonomy. Want to have a fully-licensed collegiate game? Have to go out to each conference, negotiate, and pay them all a piece of the pie. I readily admit I have no interest in playing a game that doesn't have all the licenses. That makes the experience - aside from the gameplay, of course.

Extremely unfortunate. It will always be disappointing, but the time has come to move on.

Wow I really miss my new college hoops games every year! PLEASE EA or 2K, make one again. We don't have one for the new systems! In the meantime, enjoy my updated rosters for the 14-15 season:

I come back to this game in a VERY strong way every single year around tournament time...

I miss it greatly, and sadly, because of GREED, I'm not sure many of us will see another licensed collegiate basketball game in our time...

Just sad really to kick the consumers simply because of a money grab.

At least an arcade game of it would be good

I am a former sports game dev.
I am a huge college hoops fan as well.

Bringing back college sports gaming is something I'd love to do. If the noise here gets loud enough, I could use your enthusiasm to help gain momentum and get something off the ground. I am just one man, but with enough support...ANYTHING can happen.

I would hope that the logic powering those areas would have been improved.
Understandable it takes a lot of work on the front end, but its been figured out that if you went in to each team and altered their tendencies for each player, or at least the guys who played, it would make the games more realistic....

Ex: Say you have the 2010-11 roster set....

When North Carolina plays Albany, UNC would run them off the floor more than likely once you alter the tendencies to where guys like Harrison Barnes and John Henson are taking more shots and in the proper areas and less are coming from the role players.

The problem with the original roster setups is that sometimes, not only are the wrong guys taking too many shots, but many players are taking shots from places on the floor where they have little to no business doing so...

Let me put it this way, it would be like having the LSU classic team and you simulate a game and look at the box and notice Shaq took 5 threes....now I'm not completely sure about this, but I don't believe he took 5 threes in his collegiate career, let alone a single game.

Its just botched CPU logic really....but I (as many others) found once I altered that stuff, it made the game better and also much more interesting when I altered my opponents just before playing them....

In fact, I had ran a test where the opposing team I was playing, their star only took 5 shots before I altered the tendencies and scored 8 points....while after the alterations, he took 17 shots and scored 28....

BIG difference!

Do you have a set system you use to edit player tendencies or do you just do it by feel?

i was watching some of the d-leaue playoffs last night, and i was thinking how great would it have been if the d-league system was in tact for nba 2k and it was compatible with the player ported from college hoops that didnt make the 12-man rosters or didnt get drafted at all.

i'd never leave the house again.

I do it based on per roster and go from top to bottom.

Ex: star player on team A has these splits;

Close - 64
Mid - 71
3 Pt - 78
FT - 86

In this case, I would want him with higher tendencies in both drive and 3-pt shooting...

If he's your star player, you also want him taking more shots than others so you would want to have his tendency numbers all over 50, and the dominant tendencies in the 70s or higher.

But again, I go through from top to bottom of the roster of each team (sometimes waiting until I play a particular team or the NCAAT to edit all of them), and go with what I want them to accomplish based on that.

Look at it this way, if you had 3 dominant distance shooters, wouldn't you want those guys taking much of the shots from there?

That's why these things need to be fixed until all teams are overrun with new recruits --- and sometimes even then those guys need a bit of tweaking.
