The Best New Feature Announced in MLB 15 The Show is...? (Roundtable)

There has been a slow trickle of information coming out of the SCEA camp when it comes to MLB 15 The Show. We've learned, for example, that the game will have a major graphical improvement along with a new radio show. There will also be licensed equipment and what Sony is calling the Human IK engine.

What has you most excited for MLB 15 The Show?

Phil Varckette: This has to be the new Human IK Engine. Anytime animations are redone to look more realistic and behave more human-like is a good thing. I'm really excited to see the new engine in motion. The Show has been lacking any real innovation for years. I feel like if something isn't done with this game, it will start to suffer the wrath of OS. Last year was the first time I can remember a large contingent of unhappy OSers. Some, including me, felt it over-promised and under-delivered.

Jayson Young: I am most excited for MLB 15: The Show's "major graphical improvements," assuming that those improvements include running at 60 frames per second, in every MLB stadium, from the opening pitch to the final out, without any dropped frames.

The frequent stuttering in MLB 14: The Show would often throw off my timing while fielding and batting, plus it made most of the cinematic cutaway shots look choppy and ugly. I am even willing to sacrifice less detailed and/or less varied crowds if that would result in a smooth frame rate this season.

Robert Kollars: I am excited by a lot of what has been announced so far. The new emotion and lighting engines sound great, but the overhauled franchise experience is what has me most intrigued. The Show does a fantastic job already in this mode, but there is room for improvement, and I can't wait to hear how deep it actually goes.

With Just over two months left before retail release, it should be a lot of fun for fans of the series, as new information will start to come out consistently.

Ben Vollmer: It is hard not to be excited about a commentary overhaul. Despite the game's careful attention to detail, the commentary has always felt generic and dull compared to everything else. If The Show gives half as much attention to the commentary as it does the rest of its presentation (stadiums, audio, ect.), then we are in really good shape.

I am also intrigued with the idea of a fresh franchise mode. Even though the mode has always felt steady and almost uniquely functional amongst the sports game genre, it didn't have that extra something that would keep me hooked on the same franchise for years. The possibility of having a similar mode to NBA 2K's "MyLeague" is really exciting for me, as someone who loves to customize their experience.

Caley Roark Both the Human IK Engine and the overhauled franchise are the improvements I'm looking forward too.

MLB 14: The Show's franchise isn't bad, but it's neither tremendously deep or strategic. It's pretty much contains all of the features you'd expect, wrapped in a less than exciting package. Compared to the management modes in Madden and NBA 2K15, The Show's franchise mode can feel a bit dry.

As for the Human IK Engine, it's seems like another small but important step in making The Show feel truly next-gen. Similar to the real camera angles, the real-time cut scenes, and last year's lighting, this addition looks to be a major visual upgrade.

Matthew Coe: The improvement I'm most looking forward to is overhauled commentary. When it's bad ... it's really bad. It can be an instant immersion killer, a major no-no in modern sports games. Better commentary, along with a hopefully louder, more emotional crowd, will go a long way towards putting MLB 15: The Show back at the top of my most wanted list.

Which feature are you most excited about, OSers?

My thoughts exactly. Well said.

I have been playing the show for years, and this may make me sound like an idiot but I honestly don't know what an IK engine is. Could someone explain?

I just need more info. MLB 14 let me down, but then again, I didn't expect much since there was still a lot of focus put on the PS3 product. Hopefully, the PS4 effort is in full swing this time around. The graphics don't look that different in the first trailer but we'll see. I'm really hoping this game truly puts MLB The Show in the current gen. I've always loved franchise mode so a deeper one will be even more addicting, and the radio show sounds good with plenty of potential in the future. I also wonder if RTTS has changed much, or if its improvements will be me more of a focus next year. We are in what I like to call the "foundation years" of course, that period of 1-3 years where the devs are overhauling from last gen, which means some modes will not get the same amount of attention one year.

Playing 2k15 Bball and how good the announcing is, overhaul of the announcers is a must!

I can not wait to hear all about how the Human IK engine improves MLB The Shows game play! I am also as always looking forward to seeing if the Presentation got a big maker over and looks and sounds even more like a real TV Baseball broadcast.

The commentary has been at the top of my "ask" list for 3 years... But I'm also very excited for the engine upgrade.

Ramone Russell @ SCEA indicated that they are hoping to put out a fact sheet for this year's game this week, I'm guessing we'll start seeing the first gameplay vids start popping up soon after?

Like others have said.... SIXTY FRAMES PER SECOND OF PURE BEAUTY PLEASE!

That means flawless fluid cutscenes and such, along with fluid replays.

I'm very interested to see what the major graphical improvement will be like. I know MLB 14 on PS4 was pretty much just a port from the PS3 and I thought that alone looked fantastic on PS4, so I can't wait for that.

Mostly excited for revamped franchise mode....god has it's time come lol.

other than that.... fact sheet, fact sheet, fct sheet, fact sheet, fact sheet!

I echo the thoughts of Phil and Jayson. Last year was the first time that I was ever disappointed with a Show release. I still enjoyed playing the game but I was expecting a great game to be even better on the PS4 release , just like NBA2K14 managed. Most of that disappointed was my own fault since I was the one with the big expectations. I mean the Show was about 50% of the reason I bought a PS3, the game was that much fun to me. I'm just hoping that the Show 15 get me closer to the feeling I had in 2008 and further from the feeling that I had in 2014.

I'm in the same situation as you, except it is more like 90% of the reason I bought a PS3 and 90% of the reason I just bought a PS4 at Christmas time. So even though I didn't play MLB 14 on PS4, I'm expecting a lot out of it for MLB 15. Hopefully the changes and improvements they've revealed so far pay off.

I still play MLB 14 all the time. I can see almost no way that with the power of the PS4 that hey haven't made huge leaps since last year.

I think this years The Show won't see that many major improvements as it has been yet again not even a full year of developement as well as the PS 3 version still being around. I'm counting on next year already now.

I have been playing (and coaching) baseball for over 39 years. It is my love and passion when it comes to team sports. I still play hardball and coach my sons 10U travel ball team.

My favorite part of the game has always been playing defense. And it is something I never have been able to really have an A1 experience with on The Show series. I loved playing defense on MVP 2005 as it was intuitive and responsive. But with that came the sacrifice of the gorgeous animations you get from The Show.

I have been an auto fielder/manual throw (until 14 because of the yellow ring on auto field manual throw) and really want to be a manual fielder again.

So for me if they truly have improved playing defense by making it ultra intuitive and responsive I will be so happy. Nothing would make me happier than being able to play ball again on my console in every aspect of the game instead of just Hitting, pitching and base running. I miss laying out for a ball....charging in to make a diving catch...or running back back back to the wall and stealing a hit. I want to feel that again on my favorite sport's game.

I hope they nailed this aspect for MLB 15. The one thing that always for me was a negative was the clunky fielding. So much so I used auto (which was ratings driven which is fine for me) for all these years. I would love nothing more then to get my glove back on playing on the virtual field!

Lol a little premature for that?

To add, I would like to see how all the new animations will look, the pitching and fielding has always looked a little off to me. If it could be more fluent and natural looking that would go a long way in my eyes for improvement.
